PBS is going all out on its digital efforts for Big Blue Live, which debuts on Sept. 1. It will be the first-ever live nature program showing the migratory patterns of marine life that occur this time of year at the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in California. Numerous social and digital engagements will be integrated into the program including an online live stream with multiple camera feeds, social media contests, and behind-the-scenes Periscope coverage.

 
 
NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
 
Christopher Guest’s next film, Mascots, will debut on Netflix next year, and the comedic genius will be joined in the production by some of the folks who have worked with him in such previous works as Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind and For Your Consideration. Jane Lynch, Bob Balaban, Parker Posey, John Michael Higgins, and Jennifer Coolidge are all scheduled to be in the film. Chris O’Dowd may make his first appearance in a Guest film, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
 
New Zealand-based Vista Entertainment Solutions, a global leader in cinema-management software, has partnered with software provider VINX Corporation to enter the Japanese marketplace.
 
Finland’s Tuxera Inc., a market leader in file systems, network storage and streaming technologies, announced today that its media streaming AllConnect is now fully compatible with all Roku products.

It’s been two years, but the second season of the dark comedy EastSiders is finally returning. The show about the struggles of a gay couple that has been seen on YouTube and LogoTV is moving to Vimeo On Demand. Partially funded through a Kickstarter campaign that brought in more than $25,000, the series will be available on Sept. 15.

WPP PLC Chief Executive Martin Sorrell took time from his company’s earnings call with analysts Wednesday to note that he would welcome more “cooperation” between comScore and Rentrak to provide a “meaningful competitive service” in measurement, the Wall Street Journal reports. WPP has minority stakes in both companies. “We would welcome cooperation between the two of any nature to provide a better measurement product line,” Sorrell said. “It’s clear from our conversations with clients they are extremely concerned about viewability, online viewability.”
 
Vevo has renewed its advertising partnership with Toyota Aygo for a third consecutive year in the UK, with VVV relaunching in a monthly format that includes Aygo in an integral role. The news comes on the heels of Toyota’s “Go Fun Yourself” campaign with VVV winning in a Digital Activation category at the 2015 Sponsorship Awards.
 
 

CONTENT MEDIA
 

YouTube has launched YouTube Gaming, featuring live-streamed and archived gaming videos, across iOS, Android and desktops Tuesday to compete against Amazon’s Twitch. It features separate pages for more than 25,000 games.
 
Palace Resorts is now offering Apple TV devices and smart televisions in select accommodations in Mexico and the Caribbean.
 
 

RESEARCH

 
The Interactive Advertising Bureau’s Programmatic revenue Report 2014 conducted by PwC has been released. Some of the key findings are below:
Programmatic revenues totaled $10.1 billion in 2014 comprising approximately 20% of total internet advertising revenues ($49.5 billion), inclusive of mobile and comprised a majority of display related revenues.
Programmatic revenues made up approximately 52% of display-related advertising ($19.6 billion) in 2014, while non-programmatic display-related revenues comprised the remaining 48%.
The majority of programmatic inventory was bought and sold through open auctions, but IAB expects a shift to other types, such s private auction, unreserved fixed rate, or automated guaranteed, in the next few years.
Programmatic revenues from ad tech outweighed those from publishers in 2014.
Display banner ads were the predominant format for programmatic in 2014, but other formats are likely to increase in the near future.
 
New data from iResearch Consulting Group shows that online video is a major driver of time spent using the Internet with desktop and laptop computers in China. One third of time spent online via PCs from home and work locations was spent watching video as of June 2015. According to eMarketer, Internet usage will account for more than half of all media time in China this year, but most of that will take place on mobile devices. However, laptop and desktops remain the preferred place to watch online video.  Last year, 32.4% of digital video viewers in China watched for two or more hours on laptops or PCs while 16.8% did the same on mobile devices.
 
Online video streaming devices can be found in 21% of U.S. homes, a 13% jump  over the past year, The Diffusion Group has found. TDG’s data also shows that adults aged 25 to 44 are more likely to own a streaming device while the 18-24 age group prefers to stream via game consoles.

This one is Kenyan Julius Yego, the 26-year-old who won gold in the javelin at the world championships in Beijing Wednesday.
