Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, September 19, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. 

MGM will launch its first wholly-owned channel in the U.S. as MGM HD debuts this fall on DIRECTV. MGM HD will deliver films in hi-def taken from MGM’s library of more than 4,100 classic and contemporary titles in a variety of genres. The channel will also offer original programming and new content about the film industry as well as red carpet coverage, previews of new movies, seasonal promotions and world premieres of re-mastered favorites. The MGM channel is currently available in approximately 120 countries worldwide.

CNBC will sign on the new CNBC HD+ next month initially for all DIRECTV subscribers. As a simulcast of CNBC, CNBC HD+ will give viewers the same programming content as the original network, with added content including lists of market performers by category, index charts and statistics, and detailed company profiles and more.
 
The History Channel premieres Hillbilly: The Real Story this Sunday at 8p. Hosted by Billy Ray Cyrus, the program draws attention to the lesser known attributes and accomplishments of America’s mountain folk. The program is produced by Moore Huntley Productions.
 
In just two and a half days, HGTV Design Star’s fans logged more than 900,000 votes at HGTV.com as well as via mobile text messages in favor of the final winner, Kim Myles. As winner of the competition, Kim will get her own show on HGTV starting next March.

World Championship Sports Network (WCSN) signed a multi-year agreement with the Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG) for the 2009-2012 Olympic time frames to be the official broadcaster and online distributor of FIG events.  WCSN TV and WCSN.com will provide exclusive coverage of: Artistic Gymnastics World Championships, Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships, Trampoline and Tumbling World Championships, Acrobatic World Cup Final and Aerobics World Series Final.
 

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

CBS has ordered a new series called Eleventh Hour, from Jerry Bruckheimer and his Bruckheimer TV, Granada International and Warner Bros. Television.  The network has ordered 13 episodes.  Eleventh Hour aired in Britain as a four-part miniseries starring Patrick Stewart.
 
Movie and television actress Lauren Graham, known for her long-running role on CW’s Gilmore Girls, has signed a one-year exclusive talent and development deal with NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios.

HBO has ordered up a 10-part miniseries called Reclaiming History: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy, based on the book by Vincent Bugliosi.  The project will be produced by Tom Hanks’ Playtone Prods.

Three Casting updates, per Hollywood Reporter:

  • Emily Rose has been added to the cast of ABC‘s Brothers & Sisters for an 8-episode storyline, in the role of a friend of Rebecca’s who is having an affair with Thomas.
  • Emily Rose will also join the cast of CBSJericho this season, appear in five episodes, as a woman who comes to help with the rebuilding of the town.
  • Orla Brady will play the wife to James Woods’ Shark on CBS in several episodes this season.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Nancy Carr advanced to SVP/Corporate Communications for Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel. Nancy will remain at the networks’ Los Angeles office and will continue to spearhead the development and execution of all corporate communications activities.

The syndicated talker Maury, distributed by NBC Universal Domestic Television, opened its tenth season this week and added New York-based national TV and radio personality Egypt as a special correspondent. Egypt will offer interviews and stories both in and out of the studio, reporting on pop culture trends and hot topics.

Charlie Foley rejoined Animal Planet & Discovery Kids Media as its new VP/Development. Based in New York, Charlie will develop new programming content in the areas of natural history, pets, animation and general entertainment. He will report directly to Marjorie Kaplan, President/GM, Animal Planet & Discovery Kids Media.
 
Vicki Drummer and John Saade have been upped to SVP/Alternative Series, Specials and Latenight for ABC, filling the spot left vacant by Andrea Wong when she moved over to head up Lifetime. Both will report to Steve McPherson, President/ABC Entertainment.

Children’s Hispanic network Sorpresa! hired Michael Weiden as SVP/Advertising Sales. He will lead the sales force and is charged with increasing advertising revenue for the network and its digital products. Based in New York, Michael will report to Leonard Firestone, COO.

CNBC has signed Joe Kernen, co-anchor of CNBC’s signature morning program Squawk Box to a multi-year deal to remain with the network.
 
Tennis Channel added Brian Wild as Executive Director/On-Air Creative and Susie Romano as Executive Director/Ad Sales and Affiliate Marketing. Brian, who began with the network earlier this year as a freelancer, will manage the production of all on-air promotions and short form content. Susie will lead all marketing efforts for the ad sales and affiliate teams.

Lara Dalch joins Classic Media as Sr. Director/Brand Development & Promotions, North America, reporting to Nicole Blake, SVP/Marketing.  She will oversee multiplatform partnerships and promotions, as well as working with Home Video promotions.  Additionally, Lara will develop promotional partnerships to support VeggieTales brand.

Monday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX jetted ahead of the pack Monday night winning with a 3.3/9 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX had back-to-back premieres winning the first two hours or primetime. At 8p the season premiere of Prison Break opened with a 3.2/9, just a hair ahead of the season debut of NBC’s Deal or No Deal at 3.1/9. Then at 9p, Fox’s premiere of K-Ville led with a 3.4/8. CBS took the final win at 10p as the CSI: Miami repeat pulled a 2.9/8.
