Cynopsis

05/10/06

Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, May 10, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Not to be outdone or left behind, TIVO will now deliver internet broadband video to subscribers.  In a partnership with Massachusetts-based Brightcove, a group of online content providers will be the initial offering to TIVO subscribers who have a the Series 2 DVR boxes connected to the internet.  Who that launch group of suppliers will be has not yet been announced.  More on this is promised in the next few weeks.

Tonight’s Finale:
WB:  Bedford Diaries at 8p and 9p
CBS:  Criminal Minds at 9p
Fox:  Unan1mous at 930p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

A slight program change at NBC:  This Sunday night is the series finale of The West Wing at 8p.  NBC had originally planned a 60m clip show to precede the finale, but has instead opted to replace it with the series original pilot.  Now that’s a good thing!

Joining the fray of network downloadables at iTunes yesterday was Fox with episodes from shows on Fox, FX, Speed, Fuel TV as well as from the 20th Television library.  Among those available for a buck ninety-nine downloads are 24, Prison Break, The Shield, Unan1mous, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Lost in Space.

NBC Universal Cable (NBCU) will promote USA Network’s broadband and Free On Demand (FOD) premieres of Monk and Psych with a multi-platform affiliate marketing campaign on June 30, one week prior to the USA broadcast premieres of the shows on July 7. This is the first time that a program will premiere via on demand and broadband before the broadcast airing. Participating affiliates include Adelphia, Charter, Comcast, Cox, Insight Communications and Verizon, as well as Advanced Cable Communications, Bresnan Communications, Buckeye CableSystem, Knology, Patriot Media and Vista III Media among others.

Scripps Networks has launched its latest broadband channel, DIY Woodworking, available now through DIYnetwork.com and sponsored by Home Depot. Each week this channel will feature two complete episodes of programs previously seen on DIY Network, and viewers will have access to them for up to two weeks. At any one time there will be four programs available: two for the more advanced woodworker, and two for the novice or enthusiast with basic skills.

VH1 has introduced VH1 Games, a new online gaming destination at http://vh1games.vh1.com. One feature of the site is the VH1 Classic Arcade, a collection of classic games such as Spy Hunter, Joust, Defender and Rampage, available through a license from Midway that includes editorial content. In addition, VH1 Games will offer original games based on the network’s TV shows and pop cultures such as Escape the Paparazzi, Sudoku Fortunes and I Love Toys. The site will also provide gaming news and commentary through its blog, VH1 Game Break.

Upfront 2006: USA NETWORK

USA Network announces several new programs in development in addition to its debut of the program Psych in July following the popular show Monk. The new pilots in various stages of production include:

  • Underfunded – One-hour show starring Mather Zickel as the best agent in the Canadian Secret Service whose brilliance makes up for the underfunded agency’s lack of both high- and low-tech resources.
  • In Plain Sight – A dramedy about a female Federal Marshall in the Witness Protection program who can’t tell her family what she’s involved in, but they think she’s a glorified meter maid. Mary McCormack stars and Lesley Ann Warren plays her mother.
  • Starter Wife – A limited series based on the best-selling novel by Gigi Levangie Grazer centers on a woman who redefines herself after divorcing a top Hollywood studio head.

USA is also developing a version of the telenovela, a serialized drama in half-hour episodes which will air in a late-night block of three airings over 13 weeks:

  • The Hamptons – A take-off on the classic story The Count of Monte Cristo set in the Hamptons where a group of friends with a shared secret find themselves affected by a mysterious man who buys the most impressive mansion in the area.
  • Secrets of the Spa – A wonderful new spa located outside a desert community services the jet-set flyovers and the suburban locals with an eclectic spa staff and owner, Jeanne, who runs her empire with an iron hand. When the new staff doctor comes on board, he discovers health hazards and threatens to shut down the spa.

In addition, USA is developing program pilots compatible to their WWE’s Monday Night Raw:

  • Turf – Brings the world of street racing comes to television as top street racers compete for the title of Turf King or Queen. The program will give behind-the-scenes footage of the racing teams and explore their lives outside the races.
  • The Capper – Follows worldwide one of the nation’s best sports handicappers, Brandon Lang, as his millionaire customers pay him handsomely for his sports knowledge and betting instincts.
  • Ebaum’s World – A fast-paced late-night show with outrageous clips, jokes and commentary with a companion website of the same name.

Digitally, on Friday, USA will launch a new broadband video player, USA characterclique, with user-generated content, parodies and original webisodes from the network’s top-rated series. Short-form character-themed programming is also in development and USA will stream full episodes of its best shows at a future date. This summer, USA will also engage mobile text-messaging to support its programs Psych, Monk and The 4400 (which by the way, returns to the airwaves on June 11).
