Cynopsis: Kids!

01/16/08

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 16, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

This week marks beta test launch for PBS Kids Play!, PBS’ new early education broadband, ad-free subscription based service aimed at preschoolers K3-6.  PBS Kids Play will be offered as a subscription service toward the end of 1Q 2008.  The site is designed to provide individual home learning through newly-developed virtual games and activities all based national educational standards (e.g. math, science, language, creativity, healthy, etc).  Characters from PBS Kids programs guide kids through each game and activity, which feature various skill levels as well as objectives and instructions for parents, and progress charts.  PBS Kids Play, which will be available for $9.95/month or $79/year.  (pbskidsplay .org)

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The whole of the main High School Musical cast has signed on the dotted line to star in the third story, this time though it is a feature film titled, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, per Variety.  Also returning is director Kenny Ortega.  Slated to begin filming this spring, Disney plans to release the movie in theaters October 24, 2008.  I’m hoping for the big SAT song and dance.

On that note, Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Gabriella in the HSM movies, has been cast to star the new Walden Media movie titled Will.  Written and directed by Todd Graff, Will is slated to begin filming next month.  The movie revolves around an outsider boy who becomes friends with the popular girl (Hudgens) via their shared interest in music.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Aardman has appointed Spiral International to distribute its catalog across free TV, DVD and digital rights in Latin America.  Spiral will attend NATPE offering Shaun the Sheep to Latin American buyers.  The series has been acquired around the world including by Disney Latin America.  Spiral will also be looking for pre-sales of Aardman’s upcoming fourth Wallace and Gromit TV special, Trouble At’ Mill (1×30), which is slate premiere on BBC One and for release on DVD this year.

A new season of the Every Baby Company’s preschool series eebee’s adventures (seven new episodes) will be available on-demand from January 21, initially on Comcast’s Select On-Demand Offerings, and on Cox and Bresnan. Further MSO deals will be announced later this quarter.  The series is targeted to babies/toddlers 0-2.  2008 will also see the debut of a new eebee’s adventure book series at Barnes & Noble, while a line of plush toys is available at FAO Schwarz.

PorchLight Home Entertainment inks an exclusive US distribution DVD rights deal with Granada International for three kid’s TV series from: Grizzly Tales for Gruesome Kids, aimed at K6-12; Funky Valley and Funky Town, both targeted to K4-6.  PorchLight Home Entertainment is a unit of PorchLight Entertainment.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Galleon Holdings will premiere the first line of toys based on the animated series Skunk Fu! (52×13) at UK Toy Fair 2008, which will be held in London January 30-February 2, 2008.  Developed in-house by Galleon’s Croco Sourcing Worldwide, the Skunk Fu! toy line is comprised of various styles of action figures, plush, Skunk Fu bop bag with sounds and electronic feature plush and will be supported by marketing across the UK. The animated TV series is a Cartoon Saloon, Cake Entertainment and Telegael co-production for TG4 (Ireland) and Super RTL (Germany).

BabyFirstTV’s new Home Entertainment division will showcase the channel’s new line of child development DVDs next month at Toy Fair 2008 in NYC.  Based on the channel’s original programming, the BabyFirstTV DVD collection, six titles (sold individually or in different groupings) bowed at the end of 2007.  Adding oversight of the Home Entertainment group is Jeffrey Quinn, SVP/Sales and Marketing.

My Gym Children’s Fitness Center and Stroller Strides, which offers stroller exercise classes for parents, have teamed to launch a co-branded fitness campaign.  Franchisees of both My Gym and Stroller Strides will offer discount enrollment and community events.

STONE SOUP

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences unveiled its list of nine movies that will move along into the next stage of Oscar voting in the category of Foreign Language films, and it does not include the animated movie Persepolis.  What does that mean?  Well, could mean that Persepolis will in the Animated feature film category.  Stay tuned – the Academy will announce nominees for the 80th Annual Academy Awards on Tuesday, January 22 at 5:30a.

Are kids regularly doing the digital content thing?  According to the NPD Group’s report, Kids and Digital Content, K2-14 consume various types of digital content between three and seven times a month on a single device.  Furthermore, kids download online video clips onto a device 7.1 times per month, followed by music videos at 5.7 times a month, music 4.2 times a month, games 3.1 times each month, and ringtones/tunes 2.8 times a month.  Playing games is the most common activity, with 87% of K2-14 playing on the four key devices, computer, game system, and portable digital music player or cell phones.  Meanwhile more than half of the kids report listening to music and one-third communicate with images or interact using different video formats.  On average kids are spending $6-12 per-month on some type of digital content, and $13-18 on physical content.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

As part of a new Turner Entertainment restructuring plan, Mark Lazarus, President, Turner Entertainment Group is exiting the company.  Lazarus’ responsibilities for animation, TBS, TNT, Peachtree TV, sports and respective advertising oversight, apportioned to Stuart Snyder, Steve Konin, and David Levi, each upped to President of their respective divisions: Snyder, President and COO, Turner Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media (Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Adult swim, GameTap and Super Deluxe); Koonin, President Turner Entertainment Networks (TBS, TNT, Turner Classic Movies, TruTV and Peachtree TV); and Levi, President, Turner Broadcasting Sales, (ad sales for domestic entertainment, animation and news networks and businesses).  All three, who had reported into Lazarus, will now report directly to Turner Broadcasting Chairman and CEO, Philip Kent.  Lazarus has no immediate plans.

Warner Bros. Pictures names Sue Kroll to the newly created position of President, Worldwide Marketing.  Both Warner Bros. domestic and international theatrical marketing divisions will report to one office, headed Kroll.  Most recently, Kroll was the studio’s President of International Marketing.  Kroll’s appointment follows last week’s egress of the studio’s head of domestic movie marketing, Dawn Taubin, as well as the appointment of Kevin McCormick to President, Production.  McCormick takes over for Jeff Robinov, who was recently upped to President, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures Group.

9 Story Entertainment welcomes two new Sr. executives, as Jill Fraser joins the company as VP/Business Affairs and Krista Barron as Manager/Production Finance.  Both will report to Steve Jarosz, VP and COO.  A 20-year industry veteran, Fraser was most recently with the Toronto-based entertainment law firm of Duncan Morin LLP.  Previously she was VP/Business Affairs, Nelvana Ltd.  Barron comes to 9 Story from Ontario Media Development Corporation, where she was Acting Business Officer for the Ontario Film and Television Tax Credit.

Kelly Edwards joins Radio Disney as Director of Music.  She will oversee on-air playlists and music and artist strategy.  Based at Radio Disney’s headquarters in Burbank, Edwards will report to Ray De La Garza, VP/Programming.  Edwards had been National Director/Sales and Marketing, CNN and Radiovisa.
