Cynopsis: Kids!
08/08/12

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 8, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

DreamWorks Animation and a group of Chinese partners unveil plans that includes co-producing the next Kung Fu Panda animated feature film, expected to release worldwide in 2016, and creating movie studio and an entertainment destination in Shanghai Xuhui. Also announced was the new joint venture, Shanghai Oriental DreamWorks Film & Television Technology Co., which will focus on film and TV production. The first feature-length animated film solely created by Oriental DreamWorks is expected to be distributed worldwide in 2017. After its initial feature film, Oriental DreamWorks plans to release one to three event films every year. With the goal of becoming the largest animation production hub in China, Oriental DreamWorks aims to have 2,000+ animation movie and TV professionals working at the new venture over the next several years. The new Dream Center, a multi-cultural and entertainment destination that will reflect the “new Shanghai culture” and draw tourists and locals, will cost about US $3.2 billion to create and will be located in Xuhui and is set to open in 2016. Dream Center “envisioned to be comparable to New York’s Broadway and London’s West End,” and will feature a place called Dream Walk, the world largest IMAX screen, and a central theater area and interactive animation exhibition  as well as hotel, restaurants, high end shopping areas. Oriental DreamWorks is a joint venture established by China Media Capital (CMC), Shanghai Media Group (SMG), Shanghai Alliance Investment, Ltd. (SAIL) and DreamWorks Animation (DWA). The Chinese companies will hold a majority stake of approximately 55% in Oriental DreamWorks, while DreamWorks Animation will hold approximately 45%. Disney also previously announced that it is developing a Disneyland theme park attraction in Shanghai, which will open around the same time.
