Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, August 29, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. 

NBC Universal has inked a deal to acquire Sparrowhawk Holdings, and its collection of pay TV channels, from Providence Equity Partners, 3i and management shareholders in a deal that is reportedly worth $350 million. Under the agreement NBCU acquires all of Sparrowhawk’s shares of the non-US versions of Hallmark Channel, Movies 24, Diva TV, as well the KidsCo joint venture.  KidsCo is a 24/7 multi-platform global channel for kids/families, which was created as a joint venture between Sparrowhawk Media, DIC Entertainment and Nelvana Enterprises this past April.  KidsCo is scheduled to launch in a few weeks on September 7, 2007 in Central and Eastern Europe, which will be followed by its rollout in some 40 territories across Europe, Latin America and Asia.  In all NBCU will add Sparrowhawk’s 18 pay TV channels with its own portfolio of channels, all of which will be housed within NBC Universal’s Global Networks division, for a total of 30+ channels, with plans to increase to 50+ channels over the next few years.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Set to debut this fall on Nicktoons Network US and Nickelodeon UK, Star Farm Production’s animated series Edgar & Ellen has also been picked up by MBC3, which will make the show available in 26 countries in North Africa, Levant and the Gulf.  Edgar & Ellen will also rollout this fall in France, Italy, Netherlands and Scandinavia.  From 2008, the series will bow across the Asian Pacific, including Australia, New Zealand, Korea and Singapore.

Kids’ WB, the Saturday morning kids block on The CW, has unveiled its lineup for the new 2007 season, which kicks off on September 22, 7:30a-12n.  Kids’ WB will premiere four new series and new episodes of five returning programs.  The new animated Spider-Man series, The Spectacular Spider-Man, is still slated to join the block in 2008.  Kids’ WB! fall 2007 season lineup (FCC rating):

Astral Media‘s Family Channel will debut the new live-action comedy series, Wizards of Waverly Place, on October 26 at 7p.  The 21 episode series is an It’s a Laugh Productions Inc production, in association with Disney Channel.

This fall in Canada, two of Cookie Jar Entertainment’s new series will air on CBC this fall 2007.  Magi-Nation debuts on September 8, at 10:30a, in the US the show will air on Kids WB (see above item) and Busytown Mysteries (Hurray For Huckle!) joins the lineup on October 29, at 8:30a.  Meanwhile, Cookie Jar’s series The Doodlebops returns for a third season on September 3.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Dodge Grand Caravan has signed on as the presenting sponsor of the upcoming Kidz Bop World Tour, which begins October 12 in Davenport, Iowa.  The tour, in partnership with VEE Corp. will make its way to 80+ markets.

George Lucas’ live-action series The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones Volume One, the first of three, will finally make its way to DVD on October 23, 20007.  Released by Lucasfilm Ltd., CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment, the first volume is a 12-disc set that includes seven feature-length episodes and 38 documentaries, an historical overview, an interactive game and timeline.  Lucasfilm’s documentary unit produced the documentaries, which feature interviews about the series with Gen. Colin Powell, Henry Kissinger, and Gloria Steinem as well as Deepak Chopra among others.  The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones aired on TV from 1992-94.

Warner Bros. Home Video will release Looney Tunes Golden Collection Volume Five and Looney Tunes Spotlight Collection Volume Five on DVD this October 30, 2007.  The titles will feature Looney Tunes cartoons that have all been re-mastered and in their original, un-edited format.

Sure watching TV everything looks easy, but are you really smarter than a 5th grader?  THQ Inc. has release Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader for Windows PC.  Published by THQ’s ValuSoft division, Are You Smarter Than A 5the Grader is based on the TV game show of the same name from Mark Burnett Productions.  The Nintendo DS version will be available this fall, while the PlayStation 2 and Wii versions will hit in 2008.
