Cynopsis: Kids!

04/30/08

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 30, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Disney launches a new website for kids and families in Russia, which like its sites in the US and UK features information about its TV series, movies, video games, theme parks/resorts and products.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The UK’s Channel 4 commissions several new educational multi-platform projects aimed at teen audiences.

  • Channel 4 has teamed with My Space for two projects both of which were developed by Holler, a digital marketing agency: Year Dot follows 15 teens over the course of a year, examining the ways they use  social networking websites; Insiders  this is a narrative comedy about six working people and their blogs.
  • Additionally, Channel 4 has also ordered Battlefront, a multi-platform series from Raw Television.  Battlefront follows 20 teen activists over the course of nine months.  The project bows on TV and online in fall 2008.
  • Also premiere fall 2008 is a 10-part series titled KNTV S#X.  The TV and online series will use mix of CG animation and real footage to educate teens through a group of characters who live in the made up country of Slabovia.

It’s a reunion at Witch Mountain.  The original kid stars of the movie Escape to Witch Mountain, Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann, will appear in cameo roles in Disney’s “re-imagining” of the movie titled Race to Witch Mountain, per THR.  Joining the cast, which stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Ciaran Hinds, with the kids played this time by AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig, are Tom Everett Scott, Chris Marquette, Billy Brown and Cheech Marin.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Production Team, a UK distributor, has inked a range of deals for the new kid-targeted CGI-animated series The Adventures of Voopa the Goolash (13×22).  Among those acquiring the series for broadcast in September 2008 are Mediaset (Italy), TV7 (Bulgaria) and Content Union Russia, with other deals in the works.  Written by Charles Hodges (Shaun of the Sheep, Dennis the Menace), The Adventures of Voopa the Goolash is produced in New Zealand.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Universal Studios Consumer Products Group (USCPG) is looking for licensing and promotional partners across all categories for two of Universal’s upcoming kid and family targeted movies:

  • Land of the Lost is a comedy/adventure movie starring Will Ferrell among others.  Produced by Jimmy Miller (Talladega Nights, Step Brothers) and Sid & Marty Krofft, the Krofft’s produced the TV series of the same name (NBC/1974-6, and rerun on NBC and CBS) on which the movie is based, Land of the Lost is slated for release July 17, 2009.  I don’t know you guys are talking to but I want Sleestak Pez dispensers and ringtones.
  • The Cirque Du Freak is a fantasy/adventure movie based on author Darren Shan’s young adult 12-book series of the same name.  The movie covers the first three books of the franchise and stars John C. Reilly, Salma Hayek, Ken Watanabe and kids Chris Massoglia (Plumm Summer) and Josh Hutcherson (RV, Bridget to Terabithia).  Set for release in 2009, Cirque Du Freak is directed by Paul Weitz, who also serves as a producer on the project with Lauren Shuler Donner and Jack Leslie, and features a screenplay by Brian Helgeland.

Glu Mobile Inc., a publisher of mobile games, launches a its Speed Racer game worldwide, which is based on the upcoming live-action Speed Racer movie from Warner Bros.   The Speed Racer racing game marks the first title Glu has developed and published under its partnership with Warner Bros. Digital Distribution.  The Speed Racer movie opens May 9, 2008.

Nickelodeon buckles up a multi-year licensing deal with Payless ShoeSource that will include a new line of Blues Clues footwear.  The Blues Clue’s line will include styles for boys and girls, including some featuring the property’s characters that will be offered exclusively at Payless.  The initial styles in the line will be available at retail for holiday 2008.

STONE SOUP

Sesame Workshop launches Talk, Listen, Connect: Deployments, Homecomings, Changes, the second phase of its military families outreach effort.  The bi-lingual (English and Spanish) program is designed to support and provide resources for military families with preschoolers K2-5 experiencing the effects of the deployment(s) of one or both parents, the return home of a parent with a combat related injury.  Additionally, Sesame Workshop will unveil the enhanced Talk, Listen, Connect online site in Fall 2008, which will continue to feature outreach materials and interactive activities to help military families stay connected.  The initiative is supported by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs, Military OneSource, the Wal-Mart Foundation, and American Greetings Corporation, with additional support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), the New York State Office of Mental Health (NYSOMH), the USO (United Service Organizations), the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) and Joseph Drown Foundation.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Martin Tremblay is named President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE).  In setting the long-term direction of the studio’s global interactive entertainment strategy, Tremblay will oversee publishing, marketing, sales and distribution, licensing and business development.  Tremblay, who takes up his new role in July 2008, will report to Kevin Tsujihara, President, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group.  Tremblay joins WBIE from Vivendi Games, where he served as President Worldwide Studios.
