Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 18, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Mattel has launched a beta site for its BarbieGirls.com, which the toymaker calls the first global online community designed exclusively for girls. BarbieGirls.com allows girls to customize their virtual character, design their own room, so to speak, and shop, play games, hang out and chat with other members. Mattel will unveil the entire Barbie Girls platform and all features of BarbieGirls.com next week at an event in NYC.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Nickelodeon and Chorion have teamed up to produce Olivia (52×11′ episodes, and a special), a new CGI animated series, which is based the Olivia books by author/illustrator Ian Falconer. Currently being showcased by Chorion at MIPTV, the Olivia preschool series will be animated by in Ireland by Brown Bag Films. Nick Jr. will run Olivia as 26×30′ episodes in the US.
National Geographic Kids Entertainment and Planet Nemo Animation have begun production on the new 2D flash animated shorts form series, Aloutah (52 two minute episodes). NGKE is at MIPTV presenting Aloutah as a TV, mobile and/or web-based series for K7-12. Based on the French kids comic strip of the same name, Aloutah is set in the Arctic Circle and revolves around two siblings, one a schemer and the other a dreamer, and their humorous adventures with their animal buddies. National Geographic Television International retains international distribution rights, while Planet Nemo holds distribution rights to French-speaking countries, Benelux and Asia.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Genius Products and The Weinstein Company have expanded their relationship to make Genius the US digital rights distributor for TWC’s library of feature films and direct-to-video releases. Under the new multi-year pact, Genius will also retain the physical and digital distribution rights for the term of the deal. With this agreement Genius Products’ will add upwards of 250 new titles to its library, which will now include 1,000 kid-targeted and feature titles.
Xilam has completed a number of license deals for its animated new short-form comedy Rintindumb (75 x 90 seconds) at MIPTV. Broadcasters picking up Rintindumb include, Mediaset (Italy), kids TV channel Z@pp (Netherlands), TV5 (France) and TeleQuebec (Canada). Rintindumb is based on a character from the Lucky Luke comics.
Marblemedia Distribution and Picture Box Distribution are in Cannes where they have inked several new deals for the live-action preschool series This is Daniel Cook and This is Emily Yeung. Entertainment. Discovery Latin America and Rainbow Television Corporation, based in Beirut, Lebanon, have picked up 65 episodes of each of the “This is…” series for air across Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa. The series will be dubbed and/or subtitled in local languages for broadcast in various territories. South Korean’s C4U Media Co Ltd, has also picked up 65 episodes of This is Daniel Cook for its networks. Both series are co-produced by marblemedia and Sinking Ship.
Buena Vista International Television-Asia Pacific has renewed a multi-year multi-genre deal with Malaysia’s Media Prima Berhad. Under this agreement, Media Prima’s terrestrial channels, TV3, 8TV, and NTV7, have licensed a range of kid/tween/teen-targeted programming including Disney animated and live action series and specials and Jetix branded animation. TV3 will broadcast Disney Channel Original Movie, Cheetah Girls 2 and Kyle XY. Additionally, TV3 will continue to offer the animated content in three separate animation timeslots: Kelab Disney, Toon Disney, and Jetix. New titles include the preschool series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Aladdin as well as returning Jetix series Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go! This agreement also covers current and library features from Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures and Miramax Films, such as Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, National Treasure and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Hyper Action Fridays will take over YTV’s (Canada) Friday programming block, The Zone (4-6p) beginning May 4. The Hyper Action Fridays block will include the Canadian debut of Nickelodeon’s animated series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, at 5p, and the second season premiere of the short-form series TWF: Thumb Wrestling Federation at 4p and 6p. The block will also feature episodes of Robotboy, Xiaolin Showdown and Avatar. Additionally, YTV’s website will showcase TWF, including character bios and video content, which will be updated each week, as well as the schedule of matches and video clips after they air.

MARKETING/LICENSING
Nickelodeon, MTVN Kids, Family Group and Broadway Asia Entertainment will launch the SpongeBob SquarePants Live! The Sponge Who Could Fly! in Asia next month, beginning in Singapore on May 31. The tour will make stops in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok, and Manila and then make its way to Australia and New Zealand. A Mandarin-language version of the tour will debut in China and Hong Kong in fall 2007. This marks the first time Nickelodeon has debuted a live tour outside the US.
Capcom Entertainment, a video game developer/publisher, has begun production on a new video game based on Adult Swim TV’s animated series, Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law, the series of the same name. The Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law game title features an interactive story in which players participate by guiding Harvey through various odd, but funny, cases. Capcom plans to release the Harvey Birdman game for PlayStation 2 and the PSP in North America in fall 2007.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Richard Loomis has been appointed SVP/Marketing and Creative, Disney Channel US. Loomis will report to Rich Ross, President, Disney Channel Worldwide. In addition to being a great person, Richard will oversee US marketing strategy and creative direction both on- and off-air for Disney Channel and its Playhouse Disney programming block, Toon Disney and its Jetix block, as well as the ABC TV’s Saturday morning block ABC Kids. Loomis had been with MTV Networks, most recently serving as SVP, Comedy Central, and before that as VP/Marketing and Advertising, Nickelodeon. Congrats!
Viacom has appointed Kelly McAndrew as VP/Corporate Communications. Formerly Sr. Director/Communications at The Pepsi Bottling Group, McAndrew will report to Carl Folta, EVP/Corporate Communications. McAndrew will serve as Folta’s deputy in the day-to-day management of the group. Additionally, she will consult with Sr. management and PR teams across Viacom, as well as managing the financial communications and media relations related to legislative and regulatory issues.
Buena Vista International Television-Asia Pacific has unveiled its newly restructured sales division:
- Amit Malhotra becomes Regional Director/Sales, Pan-Asia, India and Singapore from his current role as Director/Sales, India. He will now handle Pan-Asian broadcasters and BVITV’s distribution business in Singapore, in addition to his previous responsibilities in India.
- Mark Chan is named Director/Sales, Greater China. In addition to his responsibilities as Director/Sales, China, Chan adds the Hong Kong and Taiwan distribution business.
- Ramez Sheikh is upped to Sr. Manager/Sales, South East Asia from Manager/Sales, Indonesia and emerging markets including Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Brunei. He will also cover BVITV’s distribution business across all platforms in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
Matthew Palmer joins Stardoll as its EVP and GM. Palmer responsibilities include overseeing the US business and its growth oversees, as well as developing partnerships with advertisers. Additionally, he will set up and head Stardoll’s first US office, which will be in LA. Palmer will report to CEO Mattias Miksche. Most recently, Palmer was SVP/Marketing, ABC Cable Networks Groups. Previously he held marketing positions at Discovery Communications and Nickelodeon.
Jeffery Calman has been retained by Genius Products as Sr. Advisor/Digital Strategies. He will oversee the expansion of the digital rights library and content delivery via digital rights. Calman joins Genius from Warner Bros. where he spent 20+ years, most recently as EVP/Warner Home Video. Previously, he acquired/distributed films for indie distributors, as well as for Japan’s TV network, NHK.
Square Enix has named Daishiro Okada as its new Vice Chairman Square Enix, Inc., its North American publishing arm. He had been President and COO. Taking over for Okada, as President is John Yamamoto, who will also retain his role as head of Square Enix Ltd., the company’s European subsidiary. Yamamoto will also become CEO, North America, in addition to serving as Exec. Officer Square Enix Co. Yamamoto takes over the North American CEO reigns from Yoichi Wada, who heads up the Square Enix Group.

Nickelodeon’s new SpongeBob episode, Friend or Foe?, which bowed on Friday, April 13 at 8p, delivered 5.9 million total viewers. The new episode served K2-11 (3.4 million), K6-11 (2.3 million) and Tweens 9-14 (1.8 million).
