Good morning. It’s Wednesday, April 16, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.
In a show of teamwork, qubo and NBC Universal are partnering with the US Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), the Ad Council and the US Olympic Committee to introduce a new series of nationwide Public Service Announcements addressing childhood obesity. Targeted to kids, the PSAs feature young 2008 summer Olympic hopefuls (e.g. Shawn Johnson, Sanya Richards etc.) with animated characters featured on qubo (e.g. Jane and the Dragon, VeggieTales etc.). Created pro bono by qubo and its programming partners, the PSAs begin airing this week on NBC, ION Television and the qubo Channel. The PSAs are an extension of HHS’ Childhood Overweight and Obesity Prevention Initiative, Healthy Youth for a Healthy Future, and the Ad Council’s Coalition for Healthy Children.
Studio B Productions completes a US broadcast deal for Kid vs. Kat, as Jetix acquires the series (52×11/26×22). Targeted to K6-11, Kid vs. Kat was created by Rob Boutilier, and is an original production, in association with YTV (Canada) and Jetix Europe.
The 35th anniversary season of Plaza Sesamo! (65 episodes) is set to premiere on Televisa Canal 5 (Mexico) this April 21, and on Discovery Kids Latin America on June 9. Co-produced by Televisa and Sesame Workshop, the new season focuses on literacy and math, diversity, the environment, health and safety. Among the new segments in the special new season: at the start of each new episode, Pancho, Lola or Abelardo will present an interactive riddle or word of the day; a segment entitled Otra Vez en Ingles will offer viewers a scene in Spanish, and then immediately repeat the scene in English as a means to introduce children to English vocabulary words; the season features live-action filmed segments from Colombia, Bolivia and Paraguay.
Disney Channel hosts a week of mystery-themed episodes of the CG animated preschool series My Friends Tigger & Pooh. The mystery week will run during the network’s Playhouse Disney programming block May 12-16, each day at 9:30a, winding out the week on Friday with a new episode of the series. Based on A.A. Milne’s characters, My Friends Tigger & Pooh airs regularly weekdays at 9:30a and weekends at 8a and 8:30a.
MARKETING/LICENSING
This is Emily Yeung, The live action preschool series, heads to DVD under a deal between marblemedia and Vivendi Entertainment Canada. The first DVD title, This is Emily Yeung: Arts and Crafts, will be distributed in Canada from May 13, 2008 by Vivendi. The DVD is also available to pre-order online at www.thisisemilyyeung.com. The series is co-produced by marblemedia and Sinking Ship Entertainment, and airs in Canada on Treehouse and in Playhouse Disney in the US.
Jetix Europe is launching Euro Galactik Cup, an online football (our soccer, their football) competition this across 17 countries May 16-June 30, 2008. The tournament is comprised of nine skills-based online games, developed by the Jetix Digital Media Group, and kids in Europe can earn points for their country by playing the online games, which will include penalty shoot-outs, dribbling and goalkeeping tests. The Euro Galactik Cup, which bows in the lead up to Euro 2008 and ties in with the second season of Jetix’s series Galactik Football.
AMC Entertainment will host its 23rd annual AMC Summer MovieCamp in 38 US markets (105 participating theatres) this June 25 August 6, 2008. The AMC program will offer G and PG-rated movies each Wednesday morning at during the summer, doors open at 9a and the movie begins at 10a. Tickets are $1.00 per guest, and the proceeds (excluding taxes) will go to AMC charitable partners, Variety The Children’s Charity and the Will Rogers Institute. This summer’s movies will include: The Water Horse: Legend of the Deep; Alvin & The Chipmunks; Shrek The Third; TMNT among others.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Alexey Efimov is appointed GM, MTV Russia. Based in Russia, Efimov will oversee the day-to-day operation of the company’s strategy, business development, programming and production. He will report to MTV Russia’s board of directors. Before joining MTV Russia, Efimov was GM, Channel One Russia, and he was previously Programming Director, NTV (Russia).
Shout! Factory names two with the expansion of its marketing group. Kristie Vogel joins the company as Director of Promotion, and Paul Rocha comes on as Product Manager. Both will report to Melissa Boag, VP/Marketing. Previously, Vogel was VP/Radio Promotion, Compadre Records, while Rocha most recently served as Label Manager for Gigantic Music.
RATINGS
Nickelodeon’s telecast of the half-hour special SpongeBob SquarePants Pest of the West, on Friday April 11, at 8p, drew an average 6.1 million total viewers, making it the most watched cable show of last week. Pest of the West also drove the kid demos to the top of the heap for the week with K2-11 earning 3.5 million viewers, K6-11 with 2.4 million and Tweens 9-14 earning 1.6 million sets of eyes. To support the premiere of the special the network launched a SpongeBob SquarePants Pest of the West online show page that drew 1.5+ million visits. Visitors to www.nick.com played a casual online Game of the Week, titled Pest of the West showdown, 2.3+ million times in just over a week. Additionally, Pest of the West content on TurboNick resulted in 4+ million streams since March 13.
