* MORE GOOD STUFF *

With little new news to trumpet, Turner Entertainment Group executives relied largely on shtick to keep a Madison Square Garden crowd of media executives interested until The Eagles took the stage at its annual upfront presentation.
TBS
did disclose plans to launch a comedy festival in Las Vegas with HBO and live-event producer AEG Live culminating in Earth to America, a two-hour comedy/music special aimed at raising awareness of environmental issues. TBS had previously announced a second season of The Real Gilligan’s Island; the debut of the Pauly Shore reality comedy, Minding the Store; and Daisy Does America with British comedian Daisy Donovan in a fish-out-of-water trip across the U.S. The year after introducing its “Very Funny” brand, TBS trotted out comedian Dane Cook for a stand-up bit as well as Courteney Cox Arquette and husband David, executive producers of the new Daisy Does America
Ironically, NBA on TNT‘s Charles Barkley may have gotten off the funniest line of the night that surely made the network brass blanch. Asked about the upcoming NBA playoffs, he opined that only three teams have a shot at winning, and noted, “We have to make the first month mean something.” TNT had earlier announced the summer debut of its first original series in three years – Closer with Kyra Sedgwick, and Wanted with Gary Cole – as well as an eight-week series based on Stephen King’s short stories, Nightmares & Dreamscapes slated for a summer 2006 start. The network did disclose the three new original movies in development:
The Librarian II, a sequel to last year’s film in which Noah Wyle plays a brilliant man entrusted to save humanity’s greatest secrets.
Avenger, from Frederick Forsyth’s novel about a small-town town and former Special Forces operative as a vigilante who solves murders.
Pleading Guilty, based on Scott Turow’s novel, turns on an ex-cop turned attorney who must bail out his corporate firm engulfed in scandal.
Michael Wright, TNT’s SVP/Original Programming, also used the night to hype the network’s upcoming Into the West miniseries, executive produced by Steven Spielberg that begins June 10. — Andrew Grossman for Cynopsis

In between performances by Nelly, Ludacris, John Legend, Common and Kanye West, the BET Upfront 2005 touched on previously announced programming additions such as Blowin’ Up!: Fatty Koo, Remixed, Road Show, BET’s Kickback, BET Late Night, Rip the Runway and The Cousin Jeff Chronicles.  Damon Dash’s new BET show named The Ultimate Hustler will feature the Roc-A-Fella Records CEO as he puts his entrepreneurial reality spin on “how to be a kickaholic” in the entertainment business world.  The series is expected to air later this year.   The network is redesigning its BET Nightly News by spreading the half-hour update show throughout the day with news briefs airing from 10 am through 11 pm.   CBS News (Viacom) and CBS Newspath will be tapped for news content as part of their joint production deal with BET.  In addition, news item will be explored more in depth through more specials included in the network’s News and Public Affairs programming block.. BET is reinventing its image with a new tagline, “It’s my thing.”  BET staples such as Rap City, 106 & Park, BET Style, The Center, Lift Every Voice, Bobby Jone’s Gospel, Mad Sports, Black College Football and BET.com Countdown will continue to grace the African American network’s broadcasting with the award show regulars including BET Awards, BET Comedy Awards, Spring Bling and others.

WE: Women’s Entertainment drew solid ratings for its airing of the Royal Wedding last Saturday and its one hour wrap-up special, Prince Charles and Mrs. Camilla Parker Bowles.  According to Nielsen data, WE averaged an 0.44 HH Rtg in primetime, up 91% over the same night year ago, and 57% better than the April 2005 primetime average to date. The primetime high came at 9p with a 0.63 HH Rtg for the net’s wrap-up special, the highest rated special ever to air on WE.

John Paul “Jack” Turner, Founder/former Publisher of Soundings newspaper, passed away comfortably at his home yesterday afternoon. He was 73. Jack’s illustrious career in journalism began at the West Hartford News in Connecticut, first as a reporter, then an editor.  In 1963 he created Soundings, “the nation’s only boating newspaper.”  The first editions of the paper were printed in the family’s kitchen, and with the help of two others convinced of its eventual success, were delivered by hand.  In the early 1980s he added a spin-off publication, a marine business journal called Soundings Trade Only, and later Woodshop News, appealing to amateur and professional woodworkers. Jack retired from Soundings in 1988, and devoted his time to two online efforts – Cooks’ Muse and a hometown online newspaper, LymeLine.  Jack was a visionary.  He lived richly, had a wicked sense of humor, put a lot of stock in a solid handshake, and chefed up a mean roast beef & Yorkshire pudding. His life is celebrated by his wife of 48 years, Mary, his daughter Mariette Turner Brown and her husband David; his son John Turner III and his wife Cynthia; and three grandchildren, Marilee, Brittany, and John Turner IV.

If you have a college student in your family, you may want to share this with him/her.  As part of its ongoing fight against illegal music file-sharing, the Recording Industry Association of America has filed copyright infringement lawsuits against 405 students at 18 different US colleges.  These students allegedly were caught sharing music files on, “a high-speed university computer network known as Internet2.”  Created by a group of colleges and universities for academic research, Internet2 is apparently mega-fast, far faster the internet we use daily. According to the RIAA, a movie can be downloaded using Internet2’s file-sharing application, i2hub, in about five minutes and song in under 20 seconds.  In addition to filing the lawsuits, the RIAA, has sent letters to university presidents asking them “to take action to stop illegal file sharing related to not only i2hub but also other university networks like the centralized piracy servers often set up by students on the college’s local area network.”  In the letter, the RIAA encourages each university to “explore technical measures such as filtering and consider legitimate alternatives to offer to students.”  RIAA has limited its lawsuits to 25 students per school.  Suits were filed against students at the following schools: Boston University; Carnegie Mellon University; Columbia University; Drexel University, Georgia Institute of Technology; Harvard University; Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Michigan State University; New York University; Ohio State University; Princeton University; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute; Rochester Institute of Technology; University of California, Berkeley; University of California, San Diego; University of Massachusetts, Amherst; University of Pittsburgh; and University of Southern California.

Today’s Trivia Question:
  Here Come the Brides – Jason Bolt signs a deal with the devil, aka Aaron Stempel, to borrow money to keep the lumber business thriving.  He then goes to Massachusetts and picks up 100 potential brides and brings them back to Seattle in an effort to keep the lumbermen interested in staying on at the lumber mill.  There one very big catch in the deal with Stempel, tied to the bride wannabes.  What is it?  (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone.
