Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 9, 2007, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from from the pavilions, hotels, restaurants, benches, stairs, beaches, hallways and any other spare corner at MIPCOM, Cannes, France.

9 Story Entertainment, the Canadian-based production and animation studio, announces it is jumping into to its first live-action production.  To do this 9 Story has teamed with Les Stroud, the wilderness/survivor-expert and filmmaker, to co-develop a live-action kid-centric version of Stroud’s Discovery Channel reality series Survivorman.  As far other properties in the live-action arena, 9 Story’s CEO, Vince Commisso told me yesterday that we can expect to see more news on two additional projects from them in the next month or so, one of which has both a US and Canadian broadcaster involved.  On the animation side, 9 Story’s flash animated series Bash Boys (26×30) will be available from fall 2009, while Toon Boom Animated series Almost Naked Animals is slated to bow on YTV, also in fall 2009.

Aardman steps into the preschool programming circle at MIPCOM, with the unveiling of its new stop-motion animated series Timmy (52×10).  In a pre-sale pact, CBeebies picks the non-verbal series up for the UK.  The series revolves around Timmy, a 3-year-old (that would be in sheep years), who during each episode discovers something about himself and his friends, all of whom are also animals.  Timmy is currently in pre-production and is scheduled to be available for air in 2009. Based on sketches by creator/director Nick Park, the character Timmy made his first TV appearance in Aardman’s series Shaun the Sheep.  Aardman’s Jackie Cockle is Creative Producer and Supervising Director, and Miles Bullough is Executive Producer.

Disney ABC International Television began the market with news that Disney Channel has completed new deals for its original TV movie High School Musical 2 with free-to-air TV channels in 40+ countries around the world, including M6 (France), ProSieben (Germany), RTE (Ireland), RTI (Italy), Channel 1 (Russia) and SARC (South Africa), as well as by CCTV6 (China), Channel 7 (Australia) and TVNZ (New Zealand).  Additionally, the BBC has picked up the terrestrial TV rights to ABC Family’s teen-targeted series Kyle XY, which will run in the UK on BBC2. 

And on Sunday afternoon Rich Ross, President, Disney Channel Worldwide served as the keynote speaker at MIPCOM Junior, where he spoke about kids around the world who are watching and enjoying live-action TV, and as he celebrated his 25-ish (again) birthday.  Don’t worry Rich, I’ll never tell your age and beauty secrets.

BabyTV has a new investor in New Corp’s Fox International Channels, which announced yesterday it has acquired a “major” stake in the operation.  The financial terms of the acquisition deal were not disclosed.  The four-year old BabyTV channel, which airs ad free, is carried in 50+ countries, and is currently owned by its founders/creators, including Liran Talit, who will continue to head BabyTV as Managing Director, and Ron Isaak, a co-founder with Talit, will continue to act as Director of Programming.

The lovely folks at Portfolio Entertainment have inked a deal for their animated special Something From Nothing (1×30) with Germany’s ARD.  Based on Phoebe Gilman’s book of the same name, Something From Nothing, which in turn is adapted from an old Jewish folk song, celebrates Jewish culture and tradition as well as the relationship between a Grandfather, his grandson Joseph and his friend Mazel, the mouse.

Decode Entertainment completes four deals here in Cannes for its tween-targeted live-action comedy The Latest Buzz.  While a second season of the series (26×22) was recently optioned by Canada’s The Family Channel, broadcasters picking up the rights to The Latest Buzz (39×22) include Boomerang UK, Disney Channel France, Disney Channel Italy and ABC (Australia).

Icon Animation inks a broadcast deal for its animated series Lola & Virginia with Italy’s Rai.  The girl-centric series is now available in 40+ territories from a range of broadcasters and is supported by a licensing and merchandising strategy that includes a recent deals for Spain & Portugal: Comercial Nim (school supplies, stationery, backpacks) and working with working with Mendia Marketing (games, t-shirts, beach sets, toiletries); Panini (sticker book, story albums, puzzles) is set to debut product across Spain, Portugal, Italy and Brazil; Grupo Edebe (ten manga style books); Alvento (ring tones, games, images, screen savers and a WAP Portal).  Additionally, Icon is also producing online games for the series website ( www.lolavirginia.com ) which are available in Spanish, English and Catalan and are in the midst of being localized in Italian and Portuguese. 

MORE KIDS STUFF

Entertainment Rights teams with KOL Jr., AOL’s preschool targeted service, to launch Jim Jam & Sunny (260×11) episodes, games and other short-form content to the US beginning this fall 2007.  Produced to run across multiple platforms Jim Jam & Sunny, about a brother and sister, is a live-action series that uses music, stories and interactivity to support learning, discovery and play in preschool-aged kids.  Jim Jam & Sunny debuted in the UK in fall 2006. Currently the show airs in the UK daily on GMTV, CiTV and Sunday mornings on ITV1.  The series is an ITV1 commission.

This week marks the Canadian premiere of Nickelodeon’s new series iCarly on YTV, where the series will air Mondays at 6:30p.  Additionally, now through October 19, viewers can log on to YTV.com and participate in the Freaky Film Fest contest for a chance to have their user generated Halloween video to appear in the network’s The Zone.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Littlefoot returns next month when Universal Studios Home Entertainment‘s release of the new feature film, The Land Before Time: The Wisdom of Friends, on DVD on November 27, 2007.  The movie features the voices of Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Sandra Oh.  Simultaneously, Universal will release The Land Before Time: Good Times & Good Friends, the second title in a series of DVDs featuring episodes of The Land Before Time TV series.  Of course there are a range of bonus features, a several games, an extra episode, sing-a-longs, and printable coloring pages.

HIT Entertainment has inked publishing deals for its girl-targeted TV series Rainbow Magic.   Panini has picked up the rights for a Rainbow Magic Sticker Album, expected for fall/winter 2008, with Hachette taking the rights for Rainbow Magic Part Works.

FremantleMedia Enterprises and Nelvana Enterprises ink a four-year home entertainment agreement.  Under the deal FME has exclusive rights to distribute some of Nelvana’s kids programming content on DVD across the UK and Ireland.  The first three Nelvana shows set to be released by FME on DVD in the UK are Grossology, Di-Gata Defenders and Jane and the Dragon, with other titles to follow including Babar, Franklin and Rolie Polie Olie.

Elsewhere Nelvana Enterprises has also completed a deal to sell its kid-targeted animated programming on DVD via online stores, on-demand and/or via electronic sell through distributors supported By HP Video Merchant Services in the US.  Nelvana content available under the deal will include Beyblade, Braceface, Brain Jacques’ Redwall and Tales from the Cryptkeeper.

VIZ Pictures has picked up the North American theatrical and DVD distribution rights to the live-action feature film and sequel Death Note and Death Note: The Last Name from Nippon Television (NTV).  The movies are both based on the popular Death Note anime and manga series.  VIZ will offer special screenings of the movies now throughout 2008.  VIZ Media, of which VIZ Pictures is an affiliate, is the exclusive North American publisher and distributor of the Death Note anime and manga series.  Ever popular in Japan and with manga/anime fans, this property is not for younger kids.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Jakob H. Jensen signs on with Imagi Animation Studios as the Animation Director on the feature film Astro Boy.  Based at Imagi’s Hong Kong studio, Jensen will also help to train animators at the studio.   Most recently he worked at James Baxter Animation on Disney’s upcoming movie, Enchanted.  Jensen toiled for DreamWorks for 11 years, during which time he served as Animator or a range of movies including The Prince of Egypt, Madagascar and Shark Tale among others, and as Sr. Supervising Animator of Sinbad in the movie Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, as Supervising Animator on both Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron and Flushed Away, and as Character Designer on Over The Hedge.  Directed by Colin Brady and produced by Maryann Garger, Astro Boy is slated for release in 2009,
