A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM WARNER BROS. DOMESTIC CABLE DISTRIBUTION
NIP/TUCK Airing opposite broadcast competition: NIP/TUCK CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Good morning. It’s Tuesday, November 8, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing. Two major changes over at Paxson Communications Corp. One: Bud Paxson has resigned as Chairman/CEO, taking on the title of Chairman Emeritus. Stepping in as CEO as of November 10 will be R. Brandon Burgess, who was most recently EVP/Business Development and International Channels for NBC Universal. Two: Paxson and NBC have arrived at an agreement whereby NBC will be able to acquire the rest of Paxson and its 60 TV stations (NBC currently owns approx 1/3, and cannot purchase the stations outright now because it would exceed the FCC ownership cap), or transfer the right to acquire to a third party. However, if NBC does not exercise either of these two options within 18 months, it must turn over its $105 million in Series B preferred stock back to Paxson. And finally, the agreement effectively settles all of their pending legal suits, and all court proceedings will be dismissed. The Paxson station group reaches 83% of the domestic TV households in the US via its station group, cable and satellite platforms. WB has given a vote of confidence to two of its shows – Related and Twins. Both shows received additional orders for more episodes. According to Variety, Related will produce 6 more episodes, bringing it to a total of 19 thus far this season; and Twins will produce five more, giving it a total of 18 for the season. Neither can be term yet as full season pickups. * MORE GOOD STUFF *Comcast and CBS have signed a deal to provide four CBS primetime series on the Comcast VOD service. CBS is the first broadcast network to make its current and top rated series available for VOD with Comcast Digital Cable. The shows will be available thus far only in markets with a CBS O&O station, which includes the top 7 DMAs. The four series CBS will make available as of January are Survivor, CSI, The Amazing Race and NCIS. The programs will become available for VOD as of midnight after their initial primetime airing, and each will cost the user 99 cents, with commercials. CSI and NCIS will also be available for hi-def customers with HD-enabled Comcast digital cable set top boxes. NBC Universal and DirecTV have announced a similar deal whereby Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: CI, The Office and Surface will be made available to DirecTV Plus DVR customers. Also included in the deal are two series from NBC Universal’s cable networks – USA Network’s Monk and Sci-Fi Channel’s Battlestar Galactica. On DirecTV, the programs will also be available within hours of their original primetime airing, also cost just 99 cents, tho will be provided commercial free, and will remain available until the next episode airs on the network. Comcast‘s ON DEMAND service is launching a new video-on-demand (VOD) channel titled DoD from Simmons Lathan Media Group (SLMG) on November 11. The lifestyle channel will feature urban and hip-hop content with a mix of video shows, documentaries on music and sports celebs, films, fashion, comedy and much more. Subscribers will be able to access about twenty-five 15-20 minute shows a month by remote. Comcast has cleared DoD fully or partially in 22 urban markets including Chicago, LA and Philadelphia. In partnership with Clear Channel Entertainment Properties, DoD has signed Coca-Cola, General Motors and Reebok to sponsor various programming on the service. Of course if video-on-demand isn’t your thing, you can always watch some TV clips on your cellphone. ESPN Mobile, along with ESPN 360 broadband service and ESPN.com, have come to terms with the National Hockey League to offer four minutes of highlights per game and real-time stats. Additionally, the deal gives ESPN Classic one game per week from the distant, or more recent past which ESPN terms as “instant classics”, tho none of these games will be the ones that will have aired this season on OLN. Terms were not disclosed and the deal is non-exclusive. stimTVmusic — billed as the “ultimate resource of independent music fans poised to revolutionize the way they find and enjoy the best in music” — will be the first channel to officially launch from NPOWR Digital Media’s stimTVNetwork. Found at stimtv.com, the channel provides music video clips, artiist profiles, the ability to purchase DVDs and CD, or download songs. In the coming months, stimtv.com plans to add thousands of new music titles to its current library. Additionally, more channels will be rolled out over the course of the year including a stimTVcinema channel. Debuting this Friday on Animal Planet is the Animal Planet Report at 9p, which will be its regular weekly time period. The show from Lucky Duck Prods is hosted by Michelle Beadle and will focus on all manner of new developments in the animal kingdom such as a new frog species found in Sri Lanka, and a four and a half ton elephant spending time on a treadmill in an effort to drop a few pounds. A&E Television Networks has picked up Outback House from Australia-based ABC Enterprises. The 8 episode living history series originally aired on Australia’s ABC TV. The show places a volunteer group of Australians in rural 19th century conditions to manage a sheep station. A&E has not yet announced an airdate. Cameras in the courtroom will be the topic of a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing tomorrow. Set to testify will be Henry Schleiff, Chairman/CEO of Court TV, and Barbara Cochran of RTNDA, both of whom support television coverage of federal court proceedings, and both of whom were invited to speak by Committee Chairman, Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA). Both Schleiff and Cochran support the Sunshine in the Courtroom Act, a bill that empowers judges of both federal and appellate courts with the decision if they will permit cameras in their courtrooms. A couple of finale dates for you, both from Mark Burnett Prods: Survivor will finish up on December 11 from 8-10, immediately followed by the live Reunion show at 10p.
