CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

05/03/05

Good morning.  It’s Tuesday, May 3, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

ABC’s Primetime Live special Fallen Idol focusing on American Idol is expected to shed more light on the allegations of former AI contestant, Corey Clark who was ejected in 2003 when it was discovered he failed to disclose a previous arrest.  Clark has a book coming out in which he claims to have had an affair with judge Paula Abdul while he was a contestant on the show.  Cut to Abdul’s lawyers who have sent a note over to ABC suggesting legal action will be taken if the special contains the Clark allegations. A statement issued by Abdul’s handlers reads in part, “Mr. Clark is an admitted liar and opportunist who engages in unlawful activities. He is communicating lies about Paula Abdul in order to generate interest in a book deal.”  ABC has kept the wraps pretty tight on the special and isn’t giving away anything yet, so whether or not Clark is the focus remains to be seen.

Megan Mullally a daytime talk show host?  Hmmm.  According to a report in Hollywood Reporter, Mullally is in final talks with NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution to do a daytime talk show for next 2006, working around her Will & Grace schedule.

Tomorrow night CBS will air A Primetime Dr. Phil Special (8p) in which the doctor chats with Pat O’Brien.  Here’s where the whole ‘synergy’ thing has to give one pause: Viacom owns Paramount, CBS, King World, the syndicated series The Dr. Phil Show and The Insider which is hosted by Pat O’Brien, among other holdings.  O’Brien goes into alcohol rehab, and comes out ready to take on his post anchor post again at The Inside, but before he can do that, he is first the focus of Dr. Phil’s primetime sweeps one-on-one special, then appears on Dr. Phil’s daytime show on Thursday, before returning to The Insider that evening. Were it I, I’d just go back to rehab and stay there.

* NEW ORDERS / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *

Spike TV has ordered up two more seasons of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) and will showcase the series on Saturday nights. The network has also picked up the rights to 53 Ultimate Fighter Championship ppv events – those will be trimmed down to 26 one hour shows, according to Variety.  The Ultimate Fighter in its first season averaged 2.1 million viewers per episode, with 2.6 million tuning in for the show’s season finale.  Season #2 debuts on August 22, as the lead-out to WWE’s RAW on Monday night, and will stay on Monday for the first five weeks of its season.  Thereafter, it moves to Saturdays nights.  Also expected to be announced tonight at the Viacom Upfront, is a new series for Spike called Afro Samurai, an animated series featuring the voice of Samuel L. Jackson, produced by Gonzo and Fuji TV.

Coming to ABC Family is a 13-ep primetime soap called Falcon Beach (Original Pictures/Insight Prods), following the dramatic lives of a group of young people, targeting the 18-34 crowd.  Falcon Beach is looking at a Summer 2006 debut.  The show will also air in Canada (where the series is shot) on Global Television. The Canadian network has already aired the 2-hour pilot, but has not yet announced a start date for the full series.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Martha Stewart, Pres/CEO Susan Lyne, Mark Burnett. Rob Dauber and others were all on hand in NYC yesterday to reveal the details of the upcoming syndicated series Martha for next season (distributed by NBC Universal Domestic TV Distr).  The 60m show, currently cleared in 90% of the country, including all top 50 markets, launches on September 12, and will be taped in front of a live audience at the Chelsea Television Studios in NYC.  Rob Dauber has been named co-exec producer.  In Martha’s words, they will be “taking a new approach with this series by including a live, participatory audience and guests who will surprise us with their homemaking skills.”

FiOS, Verizon’s pay-television service, has signed on several more channels ahead of its launch set to happen later on in 2005.  GolTV (English- and Spanish-language soccer channel), Gospel Music Channel (24-hour gospel network), MavTV (A18-54 male-targeted sports and gaming channel), Soundtrack Channel (channel with soundtrack music videos, entertainment updates and celeb interviews) and Varsity TV (channel produced by, for and about teens) are the five channels the service has added to its offerings. Previously signed were NBC networks, Starz, Discovery Network and Showtime.

Students in Boston University’s Film and Television Department will spend the better part of the next year creating a TV series pilot from the ground up, with the final pilot premiering on mtvU, the 24/7 channel for college kids.  While the BU students are writing, casting and producing their sitcom pilot, mtvU will tag along with cameras in tow, to document the process.  The students will use a range of MSN technology over the course of the development and production process and part of their assignment is to find a way to integrate the MSN brand into the final project in an “organic and meaningful way.”  In January of this year mtvU began following Professor Paul Schneider’s Advanced Television Writing class, as each student in the class pitched their ideas to Schneider and then headed into the script writing phase.  At the end of the semester, all scripts will be reviewed by a panel of judges including actor Jason Alexander, Ted Harbert, President/CEO of E! Networks, director Rob Reiner, Gary Newman, President/Fox TV, Ruthanne Secunda from the Endeavor Talent Agency and Ross Martin, Head of Programming/mtvU.  The judges will select the script that will be piloted.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES*

Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia has added Liz Koman to the post of VP/Advertising Sales, who will report to Heidi Diamond, President of MSLO’s Television business segment. Liz will be responsible for spearheading the sales effort in support of all Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia television programs, including the new daytime series, Martha.

National Cable Communications has named Don Adams (not that one) to Regional VP/Central Sales Division, reporting to Dan Griffin, SVP/Sales. Don will lead the efforts of NCC’s central division with offices in Dallas, Kansas City and Denver. He makes the move to NCC from KTVT/Dallas where he was LSM.

Starz Entertainment Group has upped Brian Huggins and Joe Zamora, both to Director/Strategic Planning, both based in Englewood, Colorado.  Brian will oversee the market intelligence, point of sales (POS) and sales communication analysis team, reporting to Linda Brauns, VP/Strategic Planning.  Joe will oversee financial analysis and planning, as well as decision support for the SEG programming department and satellite affiliates, also reporting to Linda Brauns.

* RATINGS *

Sunday – A18-49 Analysis- May Sweep Day #4:  ABC won the night on Sunday in fast affiliate ratings posting an overall 7.4/19 A18-49, according to Nielsen Media Research.  Fox was a strong #2 with a 4.5/12, followed by CBS 3.0/8, NBC 2.8/7, WB 1.2/3. ABC won every hour in primetime in the key A18-49 demo, with Fox ranking #2 for every hour.  At 7p, the first hour of ABC’s 2-hour EM: Home Edition posted a 3.3/11, a share point ahead of Fox’s 3.0/10 for King of the Hill/Malcolm combo. At 8p ABC pulled away a bit with a 6.3/16 for the final hour of EM: Home Edition, while Fox’s back-to-back original Simpsons episodes delivered a very strong 5.4/14.  At 9p Desperate Housewives put everyone to shame with a 11.4/25, more than double its closest competitor – again Fox, with a 5.2/11 for the premieres of Family Guy (5.7/13) and American Dad (4.6/10). It should also be noted that among M18-34, Fox won this hour with a 9.5/25 and 7.8/20 (tied with ABC), respectively for its two premieres.  ABC’s Grey Anatomy at 10p was a solid 8.5/20.  CBS’ Hallmark Presentation: Riding the Bus with My Sister drew a 3.5/8 A18-49 from 9-11p, though pumped that up to a 4.9/11 W18-49 and 6.3/12 W25-54.
