CYNTHIA TURNER’S

Cynopsis

06/27/06

Good Morning. It’s Tuesday, June 27, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Univision’s board approved the sale of Univision Communications for a final bid of $13.4 billion from a group led by Haim Saban, a number which includes the assumption of $1.1 billion in debt. The deal works out to $36.25 per share, up from Saban’s original bid of $35.25/share, and up from Televisa’s last minute bid late Friday of $35.50/share.  The sales includes Univision, Telefutura and 73 radio stations.  The consortium is comprised of Haim Saban, Madison Dearborn Partners; Providence Equity Partners Inc.; Texas Pacific Group Inc.; and Thomas H. Lee Partners.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Reports are NBC has completed its upfront selling and will bring in a total of $1.9 billion, on par with last season, with CPMs down 5% vs. last year.  That $1.9 billion tally also includes the networks’ Sunday night NFL Football offerings in the upcoming season. Making up for the CPM drop year to year, the network sold more inventory – slightly more than 70%, and up from last year’s 67%. Heavily pushing its digital platforms, NBC pulled in approx $200 million earmarked for that arena. Also coming from NBC today – an announcement the network will make clips of its new fall series available on YouTube starting this week, says Hollywood Reporter.

Film studio Warner Bros. has pacted with Guba.com to sell and rent its films and some older TV series, to online users. Guba.com runs a variety of videos made available by its users – and has in the past run pirated videos.  Having worked for some time with the MPAA and having moved away from the pirated video business, Guba.com and Warner Bros. has signed a deal to make movies including Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and TV shows including Babylon 5, available for sale to Guba.com’s more than half million unique monthly visitors.  The newer films will run users $19.99 per title, while the older titles will go for just shy of ten bucks per title. Alternatively, users can rent films for a mere $2.99.

OLN will add professional boxing to its sports line-up starting July 27, in a new deal with boxing promoters, Top Rank. Fight Night will feature live bouts from Bob Arum’s Top Rank group and classic fights from their extensive library each Thursday night at 9p. Fight Night will give OLN twelve live boxing events per year, hosted by veteran boxing writer, Wally Matthews and current NBC boxing announcer, Bob Papa. Michael Buffer, the tuxedo-clad ring announcer who shouts “Let’s get ready to rumble!” will also be a part of the live spectacles. In addition, Buffer will host Fight Night: Top Rank’s Legends of the Ring on alternate nights when a live event is not scheduled. Legendary fighters such as Sugar Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali will be showcased inside and outside the ring.

On Friday Court TV will launch its first broadband channel, The Red Channel, with content from the network’s RED programming strip, arranged thematically in categories like Cars Attack! or Worst Chase Scenario. Shows such as Beach Patrol, Hot Pursuit and Texas SWAT will be featured and clips will be updated daily at Courttv.com. This is the first of a series of ad-supported broadband channels to be released for Court TV, with more reportedly coming in fourth quarter 2006.

Anheuser-Busch has locked up alcohol category exclusivity for NBC’s broadcasts of Super Bowl XLIII in 2009 and Super Bowl XLVI in 2012, as part of a new six-year comprehensive sports agreement hammered out recently. The deal gives Anheuser-Busch a major presence in all NFL broadcasts on NBC through 2012 as well as alcohol category exclusivity for two golf tournaments – the Ryder Cup and Presidents’ Cup for 2007 through 2011. The brewer will also sponsor the NBC broadcast of the Kentucky Derby and The Preakness through 2010. Anheuser-Busch has had alcohol exclusivity for the Super Bowl since 1989, and 2007 will mark the company’s 19th consecutive year to dominate this particular category.

Great American Country (GAC) owned by the Scripps Networks since 2004, has added more than one million new households in the last year through recent distribution deals. The new growth is attributed to DIRECTV adding GAC to an extra programming package and Comcast in New Jersey and Cable One adding it to their customer offerings. Furthermore, Cox Cable in Baton Rouge re-positioned GAC from its digital tier to an expanded basic tier which will result in new subscribers.

The Gospel Music Channel will join Comcast Digital Cable in the Detroit area today, which adds more than one million new subscribers to the network in this second quarter 2006. Soon, the Gospel Music Channel will launch in other major Comcast markets such as Atlanta, Augusta and Savannah, Nashville and Chattanooga as well as in Tallahassee. In less than two years since its start-up, the independent network now has affiliate agreements with Comcast, Charter, Cox, Verizon and 25 other independents.

Echostar’s DISH Network will expand The NFL Network to its basic service to its 12.2 million DISH subscribers next month. The network had been on DISH’s America Top 120 service where it initially launched last year.  NFL Network is available to a total of nearly 40 million subscribers, including 15.4 million on DirecTV.  The network’s first regular season game will kick off in November with Bryant Gumbel and Cris Collinsworth calling the shots.

* PRODUCTION / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT *

USA has a new project in the hopper, to which it has given a cast-contingent go for a pilot.  The project is called To Love and Die in LA, from Lorne Michael’s Broadway Video and NBC Universal TV Studio.  The story is about a young woman who sets out to find the father who abandoned her years before.  When she finds him in LA, she also learns he is a paid assassin … and then decides this may just be the career for her too!  No casting notes yet on who will play the young woman or her father.

Lest you think the announcements of fall and mid-season series by the broadcast networks in May marks the end of the line for the pilots in development, think again.  According to Hollywood Reporter, actor option deals for five pilots not listed last May, have been extended – indicating there’s life in the old girls yet.  The pilots names are Secrets of a Small Town, October Road and A House Divided, all three from Touchstone Pictures for ABC; and drama projects Damages and Beyond from 20th Century Fox TV for Fox.
