Cynopsis: DIGITAL

06/01/10

Good morning, it’s Tuesday, June 1, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.

In one of the biggest anti-piracy efforts yet leveled at individual users, the producers of Oscar winner “The Hurt Locker” are laying down a legal gauntlet for illegal file sharers, seeking damages against 5,000 people in U.S. District Court in Washington D.C. Voltage Pictures feels as though the movie’s popularity on P2P sharing sites – it was uploaded some 6 months before its official U.S. release – has severely hampered its sales at the Box Office. The movie has grossed less than $17 million despite winning 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director for helmer Kathryn Bigelow. The lawsuit lists the defendants by their internet Protocol (IP) addresses, with lawyers planning to subpoena individual ISPs to identify the offenders. Individual users will be asked to pay $1,500 each to be released from their liability.

A Pakistani court lifted its ban on Facebook yesterday after company officials apologized for maintaining a page offensive to Muslims. The ban had been in effect for more than 2 weeks after users posted competing “Everyone Draw Mohammad Day” pages; the sites encouraged users to post images of the prophet to protest threats made by a radical Muslim group against the creators of Comedy Central’s South Park. (Access to the sites from Pakistan has now been blocked but they’re still accessible from the U.S.) Facebook assured the Pakistani government that “nothing of this sort will happen in the future,” according to an AP report.

Several large media companies including Time Warner and NBC Universal have notified Apple that they won’t reformat their vast video libraries into HTML5 to accommodate the iPad, per the NY Post.

Yahoo
, IAC/Interactive Corp., EBay and Facebook have thrown their support behind YouTube in its copyright infringement battle with Viacom, writing friend-of-the-court briefs asking the judge in the suit to dismiss the case, per Bloomberg.

Nearly two-thirds of all online software purchases were digital downloads in 2010, up slightly from 2009, according to the new report from The NPD Group. Online digital downloads of new products accounted for 23% of online purchases, up from 22% in 2009. Online subscription renewals accounted for 34%, down one percentage point from 2009, and trial-to-paid conversions amounted to 8% of sales, up from 6% in 2009.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Apple announced that it has surpassed 2 million iPads sold worldwide in less than 60 days. The portable media device went on sale in Japan and a handful of European countries last Friday and reports of long lines and sold out stores are coming in over the transom.

Amazon plans to roll out a new thinner, faster and sharper Kindle model later this year to compete with the booming iPad, per Bloomberg. The new Kindle is due out in August but don’t expect a touch or color screen just yet as it will continue to utilize E Ink’s electronic display technology.

Professional-themed social networking service Gist launched an Android app, following its iPhone app and Gist Gadget for Google Apps. The app compiles complete business profiles for your contacts including updates from social networks like Facebook and Twitter, mentions in the news, and email correspondence across inboxes.

Sirius XM Radio launched a free subscription app for Google’s Android platform, offering access to 120+ audio channels for a monthly fee after a free 7-day trial. (Not all of Sirius XM’s channels are available for mobile streaming due to contractual issues – omissions include Howard Stern, NFL and NASCAR.)

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

After hiding its head in the proverbial sand in the days following the tragic Gulf of Mexico oil rig explosion, BP has been praised for turning to the web, Facebook and Twitter for keeping the public up to date on its various attempts to stem the flow of oil. But the social media knife can cut both ways. For instance, a Twitter parody page BPGlobalPR popped up to help express outrage over the attempts to spin the mess. (A recent tweet named Sunday “Free bp Sunday; Come in to any bp to get free hugs, handshakes and matches! Remember to say ‘thanks bp!’ and take a picture.” Then after BP cut off their live video feed of the oil spill in the Gulf last week, PBS.org launched an embeddable Spillcam widget featuring its own live video feed and a “leak meter” estimating the number of gallons already spilled. (The leak rate is currently pegged at over 1 million barrels a day.)
