6/07/07

Good morning, it’s Thursday, June 7, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Who says you can’t get anything with some peanuts? 40,000 pounds to be exact is what persuaded CBS to renew the drama series Jericho with seven new episodes for a 2007-08 midseason run. Viewers sent the mountain of peanuts to the network and CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler admitted the tactic worked and urged the enthusiastic fans to find more viewers for the show. CBS will air all of Season #1 this summer, release the season on DVD September 25 and will possibly launch an online component to keep fans happy until the second season premieres next year.

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC: Fast Cars & Superstars: The Gillette Young Guns Celebrity Race at 8p
Discovery Channel: Sensing Murder at 8p

MEET THE AFFLUENCERS. NOW AVAILABLE AT BRAVO!

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

An elephant’s trunk has 150,000 muscles and a bird can fly for more than a week without stopping. These true facts and other amazing stories, plus some wildlife stats that are false, will be examined in Animal Planet’s new quiz show series Fooled By Nature which premieres June 25 at 730p. The new series will air Monday-Thursday at 730p as part of the network’s weekday primetime family hour. Animal Planet will also debut new episodes of its countdown series The Most Extreme on June 25 which airs weeknights at 7p. Fooled By Nature is produced by BBC Wildvision.

Okay, if you missed the premiere of CBS’ Creature Comforts Monday night, you will have a chance to watch the stop-motion animated program’s first two episodes broadcast back-to-back on June 13 starting at 8p. Personally, I found this to be a 30m crackup, but you be the judge.

Bravo’s season three debut of Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List Tuesday night (10p) netted 713,000 A18-49 viewers, up 77% over last year’s second season premiere. It also delivered a little more than 1 million total viewers, a 53% gain over last year’s number.

Over on A&E on Tuesday night at 10p, the Season #3 opener of Criss Angel Mindfreak averaged 1.5 million A18-49 viewers, 1.3 million A25-54 viewers and 2.7 million total viewers, marking increases of 7%, 12% and 17% respectively over the season #2 premiere.

Adding more online purchases to its stable of offerings, CBS Corporation has bought the five-year old online company TicketReserve headquartered in Chicago. This service allows anyone access to tickets to prestigious sporting events such as the World Series or Super Bowl that would normally be funneled to scalpers. Fans purchase-forward contracts for tickets the same way investors bet on the stock market. With TicketReserve being a part of CBS Corp. now, it could expand and offer tickets to other events such as Broadway shows. No transaction price was disclosed.

FSN and VERSUS have reached a multiyear pact where FSN will sublicense five Pac-10 and five Big 12 college football games to VERSUS. FSN’s previous five-year sublicense deal with Turner Sports has expired.  The Pac-10 action starts on VERSUS September 8 with BYU at UCLA, followed by Stanford at USC October 6 and California at Stanford December 1, along with two more games. The first Big 12 game will be Iowa vs. Iowa State on September 15 in addition to four other games.

Clarification :  The Next Food Network Star on Sunday evening at 9p averaged 1.6 million total viewers for the 2-hour premiere.  The number mentioned yesterday (4.6 million) was a cumed number of total viewers for the three premiere night airings (original + two repeats).

The Big Apple will welcome The Tyra Banks Show as the first-run syndicated daytime talker will move its production operations from Los Angeles to New York City for the upcoming third season, launching September 10. The one-hour series, which has been renewed for two more seasons and cleared in more than 95% of the U.S., will be taped at Chelsea Television Studios. The show is produced by Bankable Productions and Handprint Entertainment in association with Telepictures Productions and is distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.

Illinois-based Withers Broadcasting Companies has a signed contract and an application filed with the FCC to purchase the FOX affiliate, WVFX/Clarksburg from Los Angeles-based Davis Television.

Colorado-based Cherry Creek Radio, LLC has acquired KAAK-FM, Great Falls, from Fisher Radio Regional Group of Seattle for $3 million.

This isn’t important and you don’t need know this, it’s just kinda funny. Rob Lowe got a birdie at the Principal Charity Classic Pro-Am at the Glen Oaks Country Club in Des Moines yesterday.  Only problem, it was a real birdie.  True story! In his approach shot on the 4th hole, in mid-flight his ball hit a goldfinch.  “That’s unbelievable.  Who comes here and kills the state bird?  Only me.”

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Hip-hop DJ, Fatman Scoop and his wife Shanda have a inked a new TV development deal with MTV that also extends to a first-look book and DVD, all based on their current weekly pod cast show Man and Wife. The show, which takes an intimate look at their relationship, launched earlier this year and has 3 million viewers tuning in worldwide.

CBS has ordered up six episodes for a midseason show called The Captain from CBS Paramount Network Television.  The story revolves around a young writer in Hollywood who moves into an old Hollywood apartment building.  Chris Klein and Jeffrey Tambor star.

FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) and @radical.media have a new first-look development agreement which will allow the global distribution of traditional and non-traditional content for multi-platform use. The partnership also means more branded entertainment content will be development and distributed worldwide. The pact will further expand on the current collaboration between the two entities surrounding the series Iconoclasts which is produced by @radical.media for Sundance Channel and Grey Goose Entertainment and distributed in 39 countries by FME.
