CYNTHIA TURNER’S

Cynopsis

06/29/06

Good Morning. It’s Thursday, June 29, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The ad sales forecast for 2006 took a hit yesterday when analyst Robert J. Coen, SVP at Universal McCann, downgraded his original ad sales revenue prediction from an increase of 5.8% in 2006 vs the previous year, to an increase of just 5.6% year to year. According to Coen, the slight correction is due primarily to a decrease in ad spending among two major categories: automotive and pharmaceutical.  Among the big four broadcast networks, revenue in 1st qtr 2006 was up 13% over 2005, and Coen expects it to level out to an overall increase of 6.5% for the full calendar year. Spot revenue is expected to enjoy an uptick in political spending as the year progresses, and Coen forecasts an overall 2006 increase of 8.5%.  Finally, Coen is predicting cable and syndicated TV ad revenue will be up by single digits year to year; and national radio up just 1%.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Did you tune in to see Star Jones on The View yesterday, just to see how the cast was dealing with her surprising announcement on Tuesday she’d be leaving the show in July?  If so, you heard Barbara Walters open by saying Jones would no longer be appearing on the show, except from time to time in shows that were prerecorded.  Ouch. I guess it’s not nice to fool Mother Nature, nor to surprise Barbara Walters.

The rating results are in for the two-part AMC original premiere movie Broken Trail.  Part one aired Sunday and delivered the network historic record ratings with 9.8 million total viewers. The western’s conclusion aired Monday and brought in similar results: 9.7 million total viewers. Both also delivered key demo numbers – on Sunday for total day among cable, Broken Trail was #1 with A25-54 at 3.3; A18-49 2.2. For Monday among cable programs, it was #1 with A25-54 3.3 and #2 among A18-49 2.2.

Style Network will add another makeover show to its schedule this summer when ABC’s Extreme Makeover begins Tuesday, July 4 airing 12p-6p.  New episodes of Extreme Makeover will premiere Monday through Friday at 7p starting July 10. Style Network will air all 55 episodes of the series, distributed by Buena Vista Television, which features ordinary people who undergo extreme cosmetic surgery and have their lives altered as a result.

Since Charlie Gibson’s anchoring of ABC’s World New Tonight the ratings have headed north, and the heat is on between it and NBC’s Nightly News with anchor Brian Williams. ABC’s evening news did better than NBC last week in the key A25-54 demo. ABC averaged a 2.1/9 in the demo for the week of June 19-23 against NBC’s 2.0/9. Overall, though, NBC still has the larger audience with 7.6 million compared to ABC’s 7.5 million. The CBS Evening News finished third with a 1.8/8 A25-54 and 6.9 million viewers. It will be interesting to see whether Katie Couric’s arrival at the CBS anchor desk will spike its ratings and total viewership beyond the initial sampling.

The weekly entertainment magazine series, Made in Hollywood, from Connection III Entertainment Corp. has been renewed for a second season. It will air on stations such as WCBS, WLS, KCAL/KCBS, WITA among others. Made in Hollywood: Teen Edition, an FCC-friendly E/I version and a spin-off of the original will give kids 13 to 16 years a chance to explore careers in the motion picture and television industry.

Atlas Worldwide‘s syndicated strip courtroom series Eye for an Eye has been picked up for its fourth season in 80% of the US, including 14 of the top 15 markets.  Eye for an Eye kicks off anew on September 11.

Another clearance for MyNetwork TV (most frequently referred to these days as MNT) with the signing of Hearst-Argyle station KQCA/Sacramento.   This addition brings the MNT national tally up to 87% for its September 5 launch.

* PRODUCTION / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT *

You’ve often heard that nobody needs a good psychiatrist more than a good psychiatrist.  Taking that idea and running with it, Warner Horizon Television and Shephard/Robin Prods., the executive produces of Nip/Tuck (FX) and The Closer (TNT), are producing a drama pilot for Lifetime called State of Mind, a behind the couch look into the lives of head docs.

BBC America has picked up a new series from writer Jimmy McGovern, per VarietyThe Street focuses on the lives of a multitude of families, all living on the same street, with each scene moving from house to house.
