A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM SHAFTESBURY KIDS

Shaftesbury Kids presents the hilarious new movie

Vacation With Derek!

MIPCOM-R27.12

Cynopsis: Kids!

09/21/09

Good morning. It’s Monday, September 21, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

After 38-years with Disney, Dick Cook announced on Friday that he is stepping down as Chairman of the Walt Disney Studios, effective immediately.  The news came as a surprise to pretty much everyone.  Cook, who began his career with the company as a ride operator at Disneyland and became Chairman in 2002, offered no specific reason for his egress explaining, “I have been contemplating this for some time now and feel it’s the right time for me to move on to new adventures ….”  Cook is also credited with helping to ink a deal with Steven Spielberg’s DreamWorks, under which Disney will distribute DreamWorks movies, and launching Disneynature and the newest Disney’s Double Dare You with Guillermo del Toro at the helm.  The movie studio has not had huge success with its releases over the last year or so, with Disney CEO Robert Iger pointing to the studio as the cause for Disney’s decline in the second part of 2009.  Of course, right after that, Disney released Up (5/29/09), which remains the third biggest grossing movie of 2009 domestically and the fourth biggest computer animated movie, per Box Office Mojo.  A successor for Cook’s position has not been named.

Laika, the Portland-based movie studio behind the stop-motion animated movie Coraline, has shifted its creative direction deciding to solely focus on stop-motion projects, per The Oregonian.  In making this move, Laika has let go of 63 employees in its computer animation department.  The studio, established by Nike co-founder Phil Knight after acquiring Will Vinton Studios, launched in 2005 with the mission of developing both stop motion and CG animated feature films as well as content for other outlets.  According to report Laika will now use CG animation only to help in its stop-motion movie endeavors, while the other arms of the company that makes ads and music videos will continue to exploit all genres of animation.  Henry Selick, who directed Coraline, continues to develop stop-motion projects for Laika as its supervising director.
