Easy-Bake Oven and Lionel Trains were both inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame at Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY over the weekend. Criteria for induction include: Icon-status, longevity, discovery (that is the toy fosters learning, creativity and/or discovery thru play), and innovation.
- Inspired by NYC pretzel vendors, Kenner, Inc. introduced the Easy-Bake Oven in 1963, and since then 23 million ovens have been sold.
- Lionel Trains was created by engineer/entrepreneur Joshua Lionel Cowen, who built his first electric train as a store-window attraction around 1900. Two years later as customers asked to purchase the train instead of the product it advertised, Cowen started the Lionel manufacturing Company.
Previous inductees to the National Toy Hall of Fame include Crayola Crayons, the Etch A Sketch and Lincoln Logs.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) has upped Hal Snik to SVP/Soft Goods and Sherice Torres to SVP/Hard Goods. Both Snik and Torres will continue to report Leigh Anne Brodsky, President, NVCP.
- In his expanded role Snik will continue to grow key properties – including Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants in apparel, accessories and home furnishings, while continuing to play a key role in bringing together NVCP’s west and east coast operations to develop product lines from Paramount’s vault of properties, including The Godfather. In addition, Snik will now be charged with expanding NVCP’s roster of soft lines partnerships and create new first-to-market relationships. Snik was elected by his peers to the Board of Directors of LIMA, the licensing industry’s trade association. Snik joined Nickelodeon in 1998 as Manager of Apparel Licensing. Prior to his work at Nickelodeon, he spent six years at Kids “R” Us in various merchandising positions.
- In her new role Torres will lead the business development and creative efforts of multiple product categories, including: toys and games; packaged goods; stationery; social expressions; and consumer electronics. She will continue to expand licensing partnerships that support Nickelodeon’s efforts around health and wellness by leveraging the network’s characters to encourage healthy eating habits. Torres joined Nickelodeon in 1999 as Director/Licensing for Interactive, Home Entertainment, and Consumer Electronics. Previously Torres was a consultant with Deloitte & Touche where she did strategic planning and change management across various industries.
