A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM ION TELEVISION

ION TELEVISION: BEST MONTH EVER!

In January, ION Television celebrated its best month ever with double-digit growth in total viewers, up 13%, year-over-year.

ION also broke top 10 status, ranking #9 among A25-54, households & total viewers among cable entertainment networks.

ION Television. Positively Entertaining.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

TLC’s fourth season debut of Cake Boss on January 31 averaged 2.4 million total viewers.   Episodes from season four air on Mondays at 9p.

PBC Broadcasting, LLC is purchasing KTKA-TV, the ABC affiliate in Topeka from Free State Communications, LLC.  The two companies also made a Local Marketing Agreement allowing PBC the right to act as broker for commercial air time on KTKA.  The deal is pending normal regulatory approvals and will likely be completed during second quarter 2011.

Super Bowl XLV Commercials — and the overall reaction seems to be …. blah.  As a whole, this year was something of a dud.  Some were very disappointing (Bud Light kitchen redo, Pepsi Max), creepy (Doritos sniffer), disturbingly unfunny (Teleflora, Android with opposable thumbs).  According to my in-house focus group, which I’ll grant you is smaller than it has been in year’s past, but the dogs are very opinionated (hated the Doritos Pug dog ad), the winning commercials by brand go to Chevy with the old folks home for Cruze Eco, and the Lassie theme for the Chevy Silverado; and to Volkswagen for Darth Vader.  An honorary Chuckle goes to Audi’s prison break with Kenny G, Budweiser’s Old West Tiny Dancer, and Snickers Roseanne Barr even tho the format is familiar.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

Atlanta-based Genter Media, Inc. renewed the hour-long variety/entertainment show, Crook & Chase for the 2011-2012 season.  To date, Crook & Chase airs in 150 markets and 80% of those stations are picking up the show for this fall.  The show is renewed on stations owned by station groups including Media General, Newport, Gray, Hearst, Belo, Lin, Fisher and Raycom among others.  Hosted by Lorianne Crook and Charley Chase, the show is filmed in Nashville and produced by Jim Owens Entertainment, Inc.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Production on the second season of ABC’s Jamie Oliver’s Food Revolution was halted as the Los Angeles Unified School District terminated the show’s license to film inside other schools in the district.  Over the last two weeks, Oliver and his crew had been filming at the West Adams Preparatory High School in South LA and more filming was planned at Manual Arts Senior High School before the suspension happened.  The district Superintendent Ramon Cortines said a filming permit would not be renewed unless Oliver could guarantee it would cast the schools in a positive light.  However, on Friday, the school district’s director of food services, Dennis Barrett requested Oliver to outline three weeks’ of school menus costing no more than 77 cents a serving and following federal and local regulations.  This request does not necessarily mean Oliver will be allowed to resume filming on the reality show in the LA school district.

CBS ordered two comedy pilots on Friday:

  • Project one is from Rob Schneider and Lew Morton, writers and producers on Saturday Night Live, Futurama and NewsRadio.  The plot will have Schneider play a confirmed bachelor who just got married joining a tight-knit Mexican-American family. Schneider will produce the pilot with his brother John.
  • Homegrown is a multi-camera project from Jeff and Jackie Filgo (That ’70s Show and The New Adventures of Old Christine) centered on four generations of a blue-collar Midwestern family living together in the same house.  Warner Bros. Television is producing.

~ RATINGS ~
