Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, December 1, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.  

De Agostini Group has unveiled plans to grow Zodiak Entertainment into a new division that will take De Agostini into the international TV content market, which includes kid/family programming.  The plan is for Zodiak Ent. to continue to acquire content and strengthen De Agostini’s position in the US and UK, as well as expanding into emerging markets, over the next three years and becoming a $1.3 billion business.  The new company, headquartered in Paris, is comprised of a wide range of noted TV and content production brands, including 5th Element, Adventure Line Productions, Broadcasters, Bullseye, Diverse Production, Jarowskij, Kanakna, KM Productions, Marathon, Mastiff, Mastiff Media, Neo Network, Red House, TeleAlliance Media Group, Tele Images, Yellow Bird, YS Films, among others.  Lorenzo Pellicioli, CEO/De Agostini Group, will also act as the CEO of Zodiak Entertainment, with Laurent Boissel serve as CFO, Pascal Breton as SVP/Fiction; Vincent Chalvon-Demersay, SVP/Animation, Giorgio Gori, SVP/Light Entertainment and Patrick Svensk, SVP/Mergers and Acquisitions/Business Development.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Rainbow S.p.A., an Italy-based animation company, is spending upwards of $25 million to establish a gaming division in Singapore to create a free MMO (massively multiplayer online game) based on its tween girl-targeted animated property Winx Club, per The Straits Times.  The new studio is expected to including 100 full-time staffers by 2011, with another 200 freelancers.  According to the report, if the endeavor is successful Rainbow will consider setting up an animation studio in Singapore to create animated TV series and feature films.  Rainbow currently employs 185 full-time employees in its two Italian studios.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nelvana is set to make its animated content available via VOD in the US, UK, France and French-speaking Europe via Tribal Nova‘s KidStudio online.  Nelvana is offering programs including 6teen, Tales from the Cryptkeeper and Di-Gata Defenders  depending on the territory.  KidStudio will be available on www.kidstudio.com and through several games portals in these territories.

Contender Entertainment Group has completed sales of the mixed puppet/animation series It’s a Big Big World (40×30) with DR (Denmark), YLE (Finland), Canal+ Cyfrowy (Poland) and Al Jazeera Kids (Middle East).  Contender holds the international rights to the PBS Kids series.

MARKETING/LICENSING

BBC Worldwide appoints Fisher-Prices as the master toy licensee for the new animated preschool series 3rd & Bird!, under which Fisher-Price has the global rights (excluding Asia) to develop preschool, infant and toddler toys including electronic and non-electronic plastic figurines, toys, vehicles, playsets and feature and standard plush.  Commissioned by the BBC, 3rd & Bird! is created and produced by Little Airplane Productions (The Wonder Pets), with BBC Worldwide holding the world distribution rights including the TV series, DVD and merchandising rights for the preschool property.  Fisher-Price plans to launch its 3rd & Bird! product line in spring/summer 2010 in the UK, rolling out elsewhere, including the US, thereafter.  BBC Children’s DVD will produce the first DVD of the series for spring 2009.  Titled 3rd & Bird: Bird’s the Word!, the DVD will include eight episodes of the series.  Additionally, other newly inked 3rds & Bird! licensees include: Akyrodys and TDP Licensing (nightwear and underwear) for spring 2010; Roy Lowe and Sons (socks); William Lamb (wellies, slippers and trainers); Character World (curtains, beanbags, beanchairs, towels, sleeping bags, fleece blankets etc) for fall 2010; H&A (toiletries textiles, bath toys, accessories); Spearmark (housewares, lighting) for spring/fall 2010; Ravensburger (puzzles, card games) for early 2010.

Out of the Blue Enterprises, creators of the preschool property Super Why!, partners with Brand Performance to create an specific online store for Super Why! at Ty’s Toy Box.  The joint effort launches this month with a range of licensed Super Why products.  Brand Performance retail network also includes All Aboard Toys and featured brands on Amazon.com.  Produced by Out of the Blue in conjunction with Decode Entertainment and C.O.R.E. Digital Pictures, Super Why! airs daily in the US on PBS Kids.

In other Super Why! news Out of the Blue Enterprises and licensing partners including master apparel licensee Kids Headquarters (themed and caped sleepwear, t-shirts etc), Berkshire (hats, scarves, gloves, raincoats, umbrellas and ponchos etc.), Global Design Concept (backpacks, purses), Handcraft Manufacturing (underwear, socks), H.E.R. Accessories (hair accessories, jewelry, watches) and Pan Oceanic (sunglasses) head to MAGIC in Las Vegas this February where they will show-off products for back-to-school 2009.

SpongeBob SquarePants soaks up the stage as he and the Bikini Bottom gang make their way across the UK in the live musical show SpongeBob SquarePants – The Sponge Who Could Fly from February 3, 2009.  Fiery Angel has recreated the show for UK audiences
