12/18/06

Good Morning, it’s Monday, December 18, 2006 and this is your first early morning briefing.

News Corp. is considering a major programming overhaul with MyNetworkTV, limiting the telenovela nights to just two, and replacing the other four nights with other programming. On the potential new programming slate is reportedly a handful of game shows as well as other projects on Twentieth Television’s syndication development slate, which may be moved to primetime within MyNetwork TV’s schedule.   MyNetwork TV launched on September 5th, and season to date the nightly telenovela format has averaged a 0.7 HH rating.  There was much speculation within the industry when the network first launched that the telenovelas were merely a placeholder for other more diverse programming.  However, prior to launch network executives said they were firmly being making the all-telenovela model work.  Given the ratings season to date, it appears that strategy is getting a re-think.

Tonight’s Premiere:
NBC:  Identity at 9p

MUSIC CHOICE VOD **NOW ON TIME WARNER DIGITAL CABLE! **
(details below)

After announcing just last week it would order six more episodes, ABC has pulled Show Me The Money off the schedule effective immediately, replacing it with America’s Funniest Home Videos. The network has stopped production on those additional six episodes, and it also has seven more episodes which would have aired through January.  Additionally, Daybreak which aired on WEdnesdays at 9p filling the time period vacancy left by LOST, has also been pulled, and effectively immediately will be replaced by repeats of George Lopez and According to Jim, until the first Wednesday in January when Knights of Prosperity and In Case of Emergency are scheduled to debut.  LOST returns on February 7th, airing on Wednesdays at 10pm.

If you’re a New York Time Warner Cable customer and were wondering if you’d get a chance to see your Rutgers University play Kansas State in the Texas Bowl on December 28, the jury is still out.  The NFL Network had offered Time Warner a free viewing week on the cable system’s expanded basic cable tier, and providing the network’s full schedule of programming including the Texas Bowl game.  According to Broadcasting & Cable, TWC responded with two alternative options – either carry just the game on the expanded basic tier, or carry the full week of programming including the game on the cabler’s digital basic tier, which reaches approx 75% of TWC customers. NFL Network said neither option meets either party’s ultimate goals.  TWC said NFL Network’s ultimate goal is to get as many TWC costumer to watch the network as possible, and then that interest to leverage their ongoing negotiations to get NFL Network on the cable system full time.

The fiery cooking show Gordon Ramsay’s F Word is back for another season on BBC America starting January 7 at 9p. This season Chef Ramsay is joined in the kitchen by amateur cooks who share his passion for food, in addition to visits to his own backyard where he’s raising pigs to teach his children the difference between food and pets.

USA Network has picked up the cable rights to MGM/Columbia Pictures’s newest James Bond movie, Casino Royale. The deal is for five years kicking off in June 2009, and will cost the cable net an estimated $20 million.  An additional window for cable and/or broadcast can still be negotiated.

HGTV will introduce a new genre of programming to its lifestyle schedule – a docu-soap starring real-life married actors Rachelle Carson and Ed Begley Jr. in Living with Ed.  The six-episode series reveals the often quirky green lifestyle the two share and argue over in their modest solar-powered Hollywood home. While the show focuses on Rachelle and Ed’s relationship and their some times differing views on how to live green, the series will also offer tips to viewers on living an eco-friendly life. HGTV will air a sneak preview of the show on New Year’s Day at 1p, following the couple’s appearance at the 118th Annual Tournament of Roses Parade. The series will then debut in its normal time period January 7 at 10p.

Starting in January, The Outdoor Channel will have a new primetime schedule where its programming is divided into nightly blocks around themes: Mondays – Fishing; Tuesdays – Big Game Hunting; Wednesdays – Western Lifestyle/Shooting; Thursdays – Bird Hunting; Fridays – Off-Road Motorsports; Saturdays – Adventure; and Sundays – Big Game Hunting.  The majority of the nights will feature returning series, with two new shows added to the lineup, both slated to debut in 1st qtr 2007:

  • Speargun Hunter is scheduled to be included in the Monday night Fishing block, and follows underwater divers participating in this dangerous sport.
  • Whitewater Trails will air on Sunday nights and hosted by Bodie Owens. This show shares tips and stories about ultimate hunting and fishing locales worldwide.
