CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

04/03/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, April 3, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Estimates, Shmestimates!  In its first weekend Ice Age: The Meltdown surpassed all Fox guesstimates with an opening weekend total of $70.5 million.   The film officially opened on March 31st, which makes it the single largest March opener since the original Ice Age movie, which opened with $46.3 million in 2002.  It was also the biggest weekend opener thus far this year. Once the final box office numbers are in later today, we’ll find out if Ice Age: The Meltdown tied or bested The Incredibles ($70.5 million) as the second best animated movie debut release in history after Shrek 2, which is the #1 animated movie with $108 million in its debut weekend.

In other news, Fox Searchlight has dubbed its new teen/young-adult centric movie group Fox Atomic.  In announcing the name of the new division, finally, Fox also unveiled a list of projects in active development, including: 28 Weeks Later, the sequels to 28 Days; The Comeback, a parody of the inspirational sports movie genre; Revenge of the Nerds, getting an update from the 1980’s; the sorority based comedy Unaffiliated; and Jason Reitman’s next comedy project

25 million kids voted for their favorites in 16 categories in the Nickelodeon’s 19th Annual Kids Choice Awards, handed out Saturday night at the UCLA Pauley Pavilion.  To answer your next question, Robin Williams was the big celebrity who got slimed this year, and then he surprised host Jack Black getting him right back, and then turned on the audience.  Justin Timberlake regained his king of burping crown from the previous winner Hugh Jackman, and Pink performed her new song Stupid Girls, you know the one with the video that makes fun of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and so on.
The winners include: Movie: Harry Potter and the Goble of Fire Movie Actress: Lindsay Lohan Movie Actor: Will Smith Voice in an animated movie: Chris Rock Music Group: Green Day TV Show: Drake & Josh TV Actress: Jamie Lynn Spears TV Actor: Drake Bell Cartoon: SpongeBob SquarePants Video Game: Madagascar: Operation PenguinStarz Entertainment Group LLC has renewed its affiliation agreement with Echostar Communications Corp.  The multi-year renewal provides for carriage of SEG programming services on Echostar’s DISH Network. Terms of the deal were not announced.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Yes Virginia, there really will be a Simpsons Movie.  For many it was holiday in March when they went to see Ice Age: The Meltdown last weekend.  Attached to the top of the movie …  drum roll please …  a teaser for Fox’s The Simpsons Movie.  Oh, make that D’oh, there was also a trailer for the Garfield movie too.  The Simpsons teaser is a spoof on Superman that resolves on our hero Homer sitting on the sofa with a voiceover announcing the movie will be released July 27, 2007.  And no worries, The Simpsons Movie is being produced in 2D!

Paramount has acquired the rights to H.I.V.E., based on the soon-to-be-published young-adult UK novel of the same name by Mark Walden.  H.I.V.E., which stands for the Higher Institute of Villainous Education, is the school where the best and brightest are trained to be the cleverest and nastiest of villains.  Bloomsbury will publish the book in the UK this fall, with the publishing rights for the rest of the world heading to auction.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Korea Culture & Content Agency (KOCCA) heads to MIPTV this week where it will highlight several animated properties:

  • Ocon Inc.’s Dibo the Gift Dragon (52 x 11 min), a 3D animated preschool series;
  • FFANGO Entertainment’s Tales of Greenery (26 x 15 min), a mixed puppet/stop-motion animated preschool series; and
  • Sunwoo Entertainment’s Mix Master (39 x 22 min), a comedy for K7-11 that blends 2D/3D animation.

Other Korean animation studios and their respective properties also attending the convention under the KOCCA umbrella include: Barunson Co., Ltd’s comedy/action/adventure Maskman; Toy Media’s educational series Little Philosopher; and Western Macaroni from Sieun Design Co., Ltd, which is about to sign a co-production deal for the series with CNR Kids Entertainment.
