Cynopsis: Kids!
09/08/06
Good morning. It’s Friday, September 8, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
The BBC reports that BBC Worldwide plans to launch a group of new TV channels around the world including a CBeebies commercial-free channel featuring bi-lingual content, BBC Entertainment, BBC Knowledge and BBC Lifestyle. Further, they’re talking about a channel concentrating on drama and comedy programming and down the line a BBC HD channel. India will get the first two channels, CBeebies (in English and Hindi) and BBC Entertainment. According to the network, its entertainment channel will swap places with the BBC Prime channel in select countries including, initially, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea and Thailand. The channels will broadcast in local languages, with CBeebies always offering English as well.
Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has tapped comedienne, actress and talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres to host the 79th Academy Awards ceremony, which will be broadcast on ABC, Sunday, February 25, 2007, live from the Kodak Theatre. While this will be the first time DeGeneres has hosted the Academy Awards presentation, it is also the first time she will appear on show as well. That said, award shows aren’t new to DeGeneres, who has twice served as the host of the Primetime Emmy Awards telecast, in 1994 as co-host, and in 2001 as the sole host of the ceremony.
Funimation Entertainment’s Funimation Channel syndicated anime block has grown from two to four hours. The newly extended anime programming block has been picked up by Colours TV Network, available via Dish Network, where it will launch in primetime next Monday, September 11, 2006, airing nightly at 8p. The four-hour anime block, distributed by OlympuSAT, will include uncut episodes of series including Yu Yu Hakusho, The Slayers, and the comedy series Negima.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Actress Emma Roberts, who stars as Addie on Nickelodeon’s series Unfabulous and is Julia Roberts’ niece, has been named as new face of Dooney & Bourke’s, the handbag and accessory company, new ad campaign. The print campaign will bow in teen Vogue’s October issue that will focus on “Young Hollywood.” Over the past several years the Dooney & Bourke has introduced a teen-targeted collection, designed by Peter Dooney. The new youth line will be available beginning October in Dooney & Bourke stores, and then in department stores, and will also feature a limited edition bag that Roberts designed with Dooney, which will be available from December. Previous Dooney & Bourke models include Mischa Barton and Lindsay Lohan. Roberts will be seen in the upcoming movie Nancy Drew, as the teen sleuth.
STONE SOUP
September marks the 39th International Literacy Month, and today is International Literacy Day, the latter of which aims to remind the world about the importance of literacy for individuals, families, communities and societies, and give hope to those who cannot read or write. This year’s Literacy Day theme is, Literacy sustains development, underlining that literacy is not just a positive outcome of development processes by a trigger to set in motion additional social progress. Additionally, we are in year three of the United Nations Literacy Decade, a plan of action that is coordinated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
Among the organizations taking part in International Literacy Day, Hit Entertainment will launch a series of literacy based programs called Come Ride the Rails to Reading, which is based on its Thomas & Friends brand. Hit will distribute outreach kits, featuring a Thomas DVD and corresponding literacy activities, to 30,000 preschools nationwide, book donations to public libraries across the country, and from September 26 through October, folks having their photos taken at Wal-Mart photo studios, will receive a free Thomas & Friends mini-book.
