Cynopsis: Kids!

09/17/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, September 17, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

SLR Productions, an Australian kid’s entertainment company, inks a co-production deal with German kid’s broadcaster KI.KA-Der Kinderkanal von ARD & ZDF for the preschool series Guess How Much I Love You  The Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare (52×11).  ARD’s Hessischer Rundfunk (HR), one of KI.KA’s parent companies, is also on board for the project.  The series is based on the popular picture book of the same name by author Sam McBratney and illustrated by Anita Jeram, and published by Walker Books.  SLR Productions and KI.KA previously partnered on the animated series I got a Rocket!

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Toronto-based Guru Studios has begun production on the animation for Cookie Jar Entertainment‘s new mixed animated/live-action series Mudpit (26×30).  The series is a Teletoon original production and is slated to premiere in 2011.  Mudpit revolves around the lives of a group of friends and their online game personas, as they battle other bands and go up against the game’s evil ruler.

Carl Ellsworth, co-screenwriter of The Red Dawn and Disturbia (among others), will pen the screenplay for a live-action movie based on R.L. Stine‘s Goosebumps book series for Columbia, per Risky BusinessNeal Moritz is producing the kid-targeted big screen adaptation under his Original Film production company with Scholastic Entertainment‘s Deborah Forte.  The Goosebumps book series is published by Scholastic and was also the basis for a TV series of the same name that premiere in the US on Fox Kids in 1995.  There have also been a range of Goosebumps related video games, direct-to-video movies, and other book series.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network will launch Tower Prep, its new hour-long, live-action mystery, on Tuesday, October 19 at 8p.  Created/executive produced by Paul Dini (Lost, Batman: The Animated series, Tiny Toon Adventures, among many others), the series is produced by Cartoon Network Studios in association with Dolphin Entertainment.  The Tower Prep pilot was penned by Dini and directed by Terry McDonough (The Gates, Breaking Bad).  Glen Morgan and Bill O’Dowd also serve as executive producers.  Tower Prep follows the adventures of a teen, Ian Archer, who wakes one day to find he is stuck at a mysterious prep school for teens with special abilities.  Unable to get satisfactory answers as to why they are there Ian forms a secret group with other suspicious students that work together to figure out where they are and why.

Wild Kratts (40×30), the new animated animal and science series for K6-8 and families starring brothers Chris and Martin Kratt, will premiere on PBS Kids Go! on January 3, 2011 (check local listings).  The series features Chris and Martin, both real life zoologists, in live-action segments with live animals as they contemplate what life is like for these animals in the wild, which lead into the animation portion of the series where they and the animals set out on adventures.  The series also features a cast of other characters including Aviva, a young inventor who creates gadgets for the brothers to use on their animated adventures, Koki an electronic whiz, and Jimmy J, a master gamer and ‘Teleportation Technician,” as well as evildoers.  Wild Kratts is a co-production between 9 Story Entertainment and The Kratt Brothers Company.  The Kratt brothers previous series include Kratts’ Creatures, Zoboomafoo with the Kratt Brothers and Kratt Bro. Be the Creature.

The 14th season of the animated series Arthur kicks off Monday, October 11 on PBS Kids Go! (check local listings).  The new season of Arthur ( www.pbskidsgo.org/arthur) includes a new episode featuring a new character, Lydia – a wheelchair basketball player created by a contest winner.  Additionally, Coraline author Neil Gaiman will get animated in an episode that kicks off Halloween week.  The Gaiman episode, Falafelosophy, Sue Ellen gives a go at writing and illustrating a graphic novel and when she needs some help she turns to Gaiman, who pops up in unexpected places.  Arthur is produced by WGBH Boston and Cookie Jar Entertainment.

Breakthrough Entertainment acquires three new animated properties from Niolan Entertainment, which it will introduce to broadcasters at Mipcom/MipJunior next month.  Under the deal Breakthrough holds the worldwide distribution rights to all three Niolan Entertainment produced series.

  • The Mooh Brothers (26×11) – set on a farm run by two cow brothers, Barton and Wilton Mooh, the series features environmental themes.
  • Robot Zoo (26×11) – described as a ‘retro style animation,’ the futuristic comedy is set on Planet Bot where robots live, work and play and set out on adventures.
  • The Droogles (26×11) – this mixed 2D animated/puppet fantasy series features characters (that look like baby dragons) and stories, songs and adventures, with each episode revolving around a letter of the alphabet and other early learning skills (e.g. colors, opposites, sense, social skills).

Italy’s Gama Movie Animation enters into a deal with RAI Fiction for the K6-9 aimed fantasy/action-adventure series Star Key (26×26).  Gama Movie Animation will handle worldwide distribution for the series, which it will showcase at Mipcom next month.
