Warner Music Group may follow Universal’s lead and switch to a month-to-month contract with Apple when its current deal expires at year-end, according to The Washington Post. Warner is reportedly in talks with Sony and Universal to launch a subscription music service of its own that would compete directly with iTunes. The potential loss of another major record label, following Apple’s highly publicized break-up with NBC Universal, could bode poorly for future iPod sales.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
On demand programming service MOJO launched a web-savvy marketing campaign around the tagline “What’s Your Mojo,” featuring widgets users can download to their desktops that complement the channel’s original programming. After Hours with Daniel fans can download recipes; travelers following Dr. Danger’s recommendations can book flights on the widgets trip finder, and music fans can stream tracks of artists featured on London Live.
 
The Weather Channel
debuted their site this morning geared to kids. Weatherchannelkids.com features fun educational activities, video clips, polls, games and, of course, forecasts so that kids can help dress themselves in the morning. 
 
FremantleMedia Enterprises launched a new web companion to The Price Is Right to go with the show’s new host, Drew Carey. PriceIsRight.com, powered by DAVE Networks’ plug and play S.O.C.I.A.L. platform, features lots of popular web 2.0 goodies including fan profiles, video ratings, interactive games and other social networking tools.
 
Animal Planet‘s PetFinder.com initiated a call center service to help victims of California’s wildfires find temporary homes for their pets. Log on to the website or call 866.654-4732 for more info.
 
Cartoon Network New Media says its Ben 10-themed game “Savage Pursuit” grabbed a record-breaking 4.18 million game plays in its debut week on CartoonNetwork.com, making it the #1 casual game launch ever on the site.
 
WWE.com began streaming weekly WWE Extreme Champion Wrestling broadcasts free of charge. New episodes, which air on Tuesday nights on SCI FI Channel, can be streamed each week from Wednesday afternoon through the following Monday.
 
WCSN partnered with the International Ski Federation and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association to deliver coverage of the 2007-2008 FIS World Cup Season on WCSN.com and WCSN TV. Alpine events start Oct. 27.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
 

The Granddaddy of social networks Friendster followed in Facebook’s footsteps launching an open source developer platform. Widgets developed for the site, available for users from Nov. 30, will not be tied exclusively to the site meaning apps developed for other platforms can be integrated to Friendster.
 
Create-your-own video channel provider ChannelMe.TV introduced a revenue sharing arrangement similar to Revver’s. Video producers can select three different forms of ads that will be displayed on their .tv pages, revenue from which will be split with the site.


~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Vonage and Verizon settled their patent dispute clearing the way for the Voice-Over-IP provider to go back to aggressively marketing its product. Vonage is the leader in the space with 2.45 million subscribers.
 
Many tech giants reported their quarterly earnings yesterday:

  • Microsoft‘s profit rose 23% and revenue jumped 27% y/y on strong sales of Vista and Halo 3
  • Nintendo‘s net profit more than doubled during its fiscal first half, thanks to the runaway hit Wii gaming platform which has sold 13.2 million units worldwide to date
  • Sony‘s net profit rebounded on strong electronics sales despite losses in its game division. Only 5.6 million PlayStation 3 consoles have sold worldwide so far
  • Comcast reported an 11% increase in revenue, but investors saw the glass half empty as the MSO said it lost 65,000 basic subs during the quarter, suggesting Verizon’s FiOS is having an impact in several markets

 
Comcast
also said it selected Motorola to supply switched digital video technology, a system the company is testing in Denver and New Jersey to free up additional bandwidth.
 
Starz Entertainment
improved its online Vongo video platform’s ability to link to the TV, adding support of five new portal media devices including gear from Archos and Creative Zen. Vongo also recently announced extenders for Microsoft’s Windows Media Center platform compatible with Windows PCs and the Xbox 360.
 
AT&T is still thinking about adding EchoStar to its portfolio of entertainment assets, consulting lawyers in Washington about how long a merger would take to win approval, according to The Wall Street Journal. Many are skeptical that Charlie Ergen would ever sell, even at the handsome price of $30 billion being bandied about.
 
CNET
sold its online photo sharing site Webshots to American Greetings for $45 million, which sees it as an extension of its online greeting card business. Webshots competes with sites such as Flickr, Photobucket and Slide.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
On Demand usage trended upward during the first half of 2007, according to Rentrak Corp.’s latest OnDemand Essentials report, with total orders increasing 44% to 1.44 billion compared to the same 6-month period in 2006. The report tracks Free On Demand (FOD), Subscription Video On Demand (SVOD) and Transactional On Demand (TOD) performance among nine US regions.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

 
VH1 promoted three executives in its digital ranks:

  • Tina Imm was upped to SVP and GM of VH1 Digital, responsible for overall strategy, creative direction, content development and production for all of VH1 Digital’s platforms. She will continue to report to Tom Calderone, EVP and GM of VH1
  • Former Executive Producer Tony Carbone was promoted to VP/Digital Production and Programming, VH1 Digital
  • Deb Kadetsky was upped from Director to VP/Digital Marketing, VH1 Digital.

 
Former Yahoo CMO Cammie Dunaway joined Nintendo as EVP/Sales and Marketing.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
 

Comcast’s FEARnet, available both online and on demand, has its share of ghoulish goodies lined up for Halloween. “30 Days of Night: Blood Trails” is a slickly-produced prequel to the box office hit from Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Productions. (See if you can spot the Evil Dead homages). In “Route 666,” scream queen Danielle Harris visits a different haunted house across the nation each day in October. The site sets out to be a portal for fans of the horror genre; originals like Catacombs, produced by Saw creators Twisted Pictures, are really helping to raise its profile.
