CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

10/01/04

Good morning. It’s Finally Friday, October 1, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

From a viewer’s perspective, Wednesday is a tough night. So much to watch – so little time.  The Big 3 were very competitive – CBS led by a tenth of a demo rating point over ABC, and two tenths over NBC: CBS 4.9/13, ABC 4.8/13, NBC 4.7/12, according to Nielsen Media Research
At 8pm ABC dominated with a 6.2/18, for Lost’s second week, more than double #2 ranked Fox which earned a 2.6/8 for That 70’s Show and Quintuplets.  Hawaii on NBC earned a 2.5/7, up marginally from last week. UPN’s Next Top Model earned a 2.1/6 A18-49, but more importantly for UPN, it scored a 4.4/13 among W18-34, behind ABC in that demo by just two share points.  Smallville on the WB earned a 2.6/7 A18-49, and a 3.7/13 among M18-34.
At 9pm NBC was out in front with The Apprentice’s 6.5/16, though close behind was a repeat of CSI with a 5.4/14 (in two weeks this repeat of CSI will be replaced with King of Queens and the premiere of Center of the Universe). ABC’s The Bachelor was third in the time period with a 3.3/8.  UPN’s premiere of Kevin Hill earned a 1.7/4 A18-49, which picked up to a  3.1/8 among W18-34, though down from its Top Model lead-in by 38%. WB’s The Mountain had a 1.3/3 A18-49, down 23% from its premiere week. The Mountain did better among teens with a 1.6/5.
At 10p CBS’ CSI New York easily won the hour with a 6.9/18, on par with last week’s average, and ahead by five share points of both ABC and NBC.  ABC’s Wife Swap premiere earned a 4.9/13, on par with its Sunday night preview special; and Law & Order on NBC had a 5.0/13.

The second pick up of the season – JOEY on NBC has rec’d a full season order.  Joey thus far this season has averaged a 7.0/21 A18-49 rating.

Casting / Development / Production:

  • If you’ve seen any really really huge snake movies lately, then you’re familiar with Johnny Messner. Moving away from snakes and into the world of weekly dramas, Messner has signed a talent holding deal with Fox, potentially for a drama series next season.
  • Tom Stern‘s comic strip CEO Dad has signed a development deal with Spelling Television to bring his strip to the small screen.  While still in the early stages of development, it has not yet been decided if this will be an animated or live action project.
  • Paul Reiser’s Nuance Prods has signed a two year ‘first look’ deal with Paramount Network Television to develop series.
  • Axelrod/Edwards Co. has three projects in the works, each receiving script commitments – one at CBS and two at UPN.  The CBS project is called Zen Justice, based on the private detective novels by Elizabeth Cosin.  For UPN a legal/investigative drama called Legal Eyes, and an ensemble drama about six 20-somethings living in LA. All three projects will be produced by Paramount Network Television

Two more markets have moved NBC Universal’s The Jane Pauley ShowWDSU in New Orleans, where Jane has averaged a 2.3/4 and was the news lead-in, has replaced Jane at 4pm with Judge Judy, and moved to noon. The show was down by 50% from the time period average a year ago and dropping off by 32% of its lead-in, ultimately causing a 27% dip in the 5pm news.  The other station to move Jane is KATU/Portland where Jane has been airing at 4pm and averaging a 1.2/3, down 71% from year ago averages, and dipping by 40% from its lead-in. Here the show is replaced by Millionaire and The Insider.  Jane moves up to 3pm.  In each of the four markets who have thus far moved Jane, all of them had scheduled Jane as their news lead-in.

According to Hollywood Reporter, 20th Television is considering taking out The Simple Life into syndication and has thus far already received interest from a handful of cable networks.

Marking the first time NBC will have integrated a product into a scripted drama, this Sunday’s episode of American Dreams (Oct. 3) will launch a cross-promotion involving Campbell’s Tomato Soup, NBC and Scholastic, in an agreement negotiated by Mediaedge:cia.  On the show, younger daughter Patty Pryor enters a Campbell’s essay contest that will become a recurring story arc across eight episodes. Meanwhile back here in 2004, Campbell’s is running a real essay contest for high school students that offers a grand prize of a $100,000 and the chance for a dance cameo on the series.  The contest will be promoted with a 30-second spot on Sunday featuring the show’s cast.  The contest will be supported on NBC with 20-second spots across top-tier primetime and daytime programs such as, The Apprentice, Days of Our Lives and Radio Music Awards, and the contest will be featured on 42 million Campbell’s soup labels.  Additional integration components for Campbell’s Tomato Soup and NBC throughout the season include:

  • Campbell’s Tomato Soup retro-commercial that will play on the Pryor’s TV as the family watches
  • the Pryor family eating a “Campbell’s Tomato Soup dinner with mix-ins,” on three different occasions
  • soup cans will be displayed in the family kitchen
  • welcome basket presented with Campbell’s Tomato Soup
  • Patty serving soup to her friend Chris
  • Andy Warhol seen signing soup cans on a college campus

More exhibitors will re-join the ranks on the floor at NATPE this January 25-27 (at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas) — Paramount Domestic Television, Sony Pictures International Television and Warner Brothers International Television.  20th announced earlier it too would return to the floor in 2005. Exhibitors who came back to the convention hall last year included majors such as King World, CBS, NBC Enterprises, Sony Pictures Television, Universal and Carsey-Werner. Still hanging in the suites for ’05 are Buena Vista, Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution and Tribune.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1989:  Brontosaurus goes from extinct to non-existent.  The famous dinosaur’s fossils were first discovered and named by Othniel Marsh in 1879.  Two years earlier, Marsh had identified another fossil find as apatosaurus, but scientists later determined that the two were the same animal.  Although the duplication was discovered in 1903 (the earlier name took precedence), the name brontosaurus stuck until 1989, when the United States Postal Service issued a brontosaurus stamp, sparking an outcry from paleontologists and bringing the matter to popular attention.
