Good morning, it’s Friday, May 14, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Don’t expect Hulu to make it to the iPad anytime soon. When introducing a new version of the Hulu video player in a blog post, Hulu VP, Product Eugene Wei noted that HTML5 “doesn’t yet meet all of our customers’ needs,” which include securing content, handling reporting and achieving advanced adaptive streaming performance. The new player, written in “ActionScript 13,” does showcase a host of new features including adaptive bitrate streaming options that suggest the best quality for your individual connection. The homepage now recommends shows you might like based on past viewing to users who log in. Another cool feature is a system that normalizes the volume in spot ads to a uniform level that so your ears aren’t blasted out during the commercial breaks.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
ESPN has signed a deal with Comcast, the nation’s largest MSO, to carry the ESPN 3D channel when it launches on June 11 (coinciding with the kick off of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.) The channel has as many as 25 3D World Cup matches planned, as well as the XGames, College Football’s ACC Championship and BCS National Championship game and College Basketball’s Big East Tournament.
 
MTV Networks has agreed to televise two press conferences at the E3 gaming confab in LA: the first is the premiere of Microsoft’s Project Natal interface at 3:30 pm ET on June 15 that allows the user to play along on screen without a controller. (The Project Natal demo will feature a live performance imagined by Cirque du Soleil.) The second, a briefing revealing the future of the Xbox 360 platform, will air live on Spike TV on Monday, June 14 at 1:30 pm ET. Both events will also stream live on MTV’s GameTrailers.com.
 
Univision.com is streaming a live Town Hall debate on Immigration Reform from Miami, Florida and Phoenix, Arizona on Friday, May 14 at 10pm ET/PT.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
One thing that FourSquare has demonstrated is that fans love pursuing goals. Fan it is NBC’s new network-wide affinity program that sets out to provide viewers with incentives to generate buzz about the network’s programming. Users will be awarded with loyalty points by watching videos, chatting, Twittering or sharing NBC-related information. The points can then be redeemed to gain exclusive access to early previews of new and returning shows, get discounts for NBC merchandise at the NBC store, win show-themed virtual goods and badges, etc.
 
Actor James Caan, Chairman of the Advisory Board of Openfilm.com, is hosting a live chat on the site next Thursday, May 20 at noon PST to educate users about the start-up. Openfilm mentors and holds competitions encouraging filmmakers to submit shorts that could be developed into a feature-length concept. Work submitted to the site is monetized via advertising with the site splitting revenues with creators 50/50.
 
Ikea has ordered a third season of Illena Douglas’ infectious web series Easy to Assemble, per Variety. New webisodes will begin shooting in July and premiere online from Oct. through Dec.
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
How much is a vibrant Facebook page worth to a brand? Social media-focused ad agency Virtue has launched a Social Page Evaluator designed to provide an assessment of a brand’s Facebook Page value and the effectiveness of its social media efforts. Enter the URL of any Facebook page and the Evaluator will examine its fan count, post frequency and various fan interactions within the page and crunch the data to measure fan valuation and “engagement.” Each fan generates about 1 impression each on average, according to Vitrue CEO Reggie Bradford and the value of those impressions is pegged at roughly $5 per fan.
 
NBC
and Microsoft Advertising announced an ambitious digital marketing partnership featuring full page takeovers, in-game advertising, search integration and custom components, designed to promote NBC’s “More Colorful” Fall 2010 program lineup. The multi-screen campaign kicks off on May 17 – the day NBC officially launches its fall lineup – running across MSN, Xbox, Microsoft Mobile and Bing.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
FTC Chairman Jon Liebowitz struck a consolatory tone in an address at the Cable Show on Wed., suggesting the commission would forgo regulating behavioral targeted advertising if the industry did a sufficient job of regulating itself. But he did warn companies to do a better job at explaining its practices and outlining options to consumers in plain language. “Today, few of us can comprehend the amount of personal data we’ve left open for capture on the internet, and disclosure forms are most often written by lawyers, paid, it seems, by the syllable,” he said.
 
Disney acquired children’s subscription-based virtual world Club Penguin in Aug, 2007 in a deal that could have been valued at $700 million but the company has failed to make its last two growth thresholds, per the NYTimes.
 
Nintendo of America Inc. has filed a civil lawsuit against NXPGame Inc, the owner of multiple websites that sell illegal video game copiers.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Internet advertising revenues rose to $5.9 billion during Q1 2010 – a 7.5% jump over the same period in 2009, according to the numbers released by the IAB and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). The total represented a new first quarter high for the industry.
 
The display ad business rose by 15% in terms of the number of ad impressions served, according to ComScore. As noted yesterday, Facebook led all publishers with 176 billion ad impressions, besting Yahoo for the first time. AT&T led competitor Verizon as the top online display advertiser in Q1 with 26.3 billion impressions, accounting for 2.4% of all display ads.

Someone must be taking those DirecTV “Tell the Truth” ads to heart. Comcast CEO Brian Roberts wowed cable show attendees this week demonstrating a new iPad app that enables you to manipulate your set-top box remotely. It goes far beyond the typical DVR scheduling app, (yes, Comcast finally has one of those, too), enabling features including chat and social viewing parties. Dubbed the Xfinity Remote, it’s being designed to work across multiple mobile devices in conjunction with any EBIF-enabled set-top.

Tribune has named Don Meek to EVP/Chief Revenue Officer for its interactive and publishing divisions, effective immediately. Don was formerly President of National Media Sales for Tribune’s interactive and publishing divisions.
 


~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

 
In an ingenious lobbying effort, Facebook has put together a social networking page for members of Congress, providing easy links to specific congressional Facebook pages. (Regulators who utilize your services to scare up votes are much less likely to rain down on your parade with burdensome regulations, no?)  More than 300 members of Congress are already using the platform to communicate with their constituents. So far, Democrats Mark Udall of Colorado and Claire McCaskill of Missouri are the most beloved with over 4,000 fans each. Facebook also released a PDF walking politicians through best practices of building their own Facebook page on the Facebook Government page. Of course, nowhere in the guide is mention of Facebook’s byzantine Privacy Practices – a subject about which the Facebook brain trust met to discuss yesterday afternoon, according to AllFacebook.com. Tech blogger Jeff Jarvis has some suggestions for how to defuse the privacy fiasco, exacerbated this week after a contentious reader Q&A with Elliot Schrage, Facebook’s VP/Public Policy hosted by the NYTimes’ Bits blog.
