Cynopsis: Kids!

03/28/08

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 28, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The BBC’s CBBC has commissioned the kid-targeted live-action comedy Dani’s House (13x3o) from The Foundation, which is part of the RDF Media Group.  Dani’s House was created specifically for actress Dani Harmer, best known for her role as Tracy Beaker on the CBBC’s long-running series of the same name.  In the show Dani, who plays herself, and her friends (played by newcomers Harry Culverhouse and Klariza Clayton) spend time hanging out at, you guessed it, Dani’s House.  Currently in production, Dani’s House is slated to premiere later this year.

Animator/writer Michael Dougherty is set to co-write and direct a new digitally animated sci-fi adventure movie titled Calling All Robots for Disney and writer/director Robert Zemeckis’ ImageMovers, according to Variety.  Based on an original idea by Dougherty, Breehn Burns and Simeon Wilkins, who will also work on the script and will also serve as artists and designers, the movie is inspired by the Godzilla movies.  The movie will be produced using the same performance capture technology used for Zemeckis’ adaptation of Beowulf, Monster House, and The Polar Express.

MORE KIDS STUFF

BabyFirst, the 24/7 channel aimed at babies/toddlers/parents, premieres on Hong Kong Cable this Monday, March 31 at 6a.  BabyFirst TV will be carried on Hong Kong Cable TV’s Channel 138 and will be included as part of its Happy Kids Pack.  Consumers can subscribe on a monthly or annual basis.

Sorpresa, the channel targeted to Hispanic kids 2-17, acquires seven new programs for its 2Q 2008 lineup.  Sorpresa’s new programming includes: the animated preschool series Boom & Reds, Zumbers and Tweenies; for K6-11 Lola and Virginia, Telmo and Tula: Little Cooks and Arts & Crafts; and for teens the animated series Girl Stuff, Boy Stuff and Erky Perky.  Sorpresa has also launched Cine Sorpresa; a family-targeted block that will feature animated classics in Spanish.  In addition, Sorpresa has picked up three new preschool specials, April Fool’s Day with Lola & Virginia, Cine Sorpresa’s Jungle Book and Earth Day with Arcandina.

Leading up to the premiere of the newly envisioned Ben 10: Alien Force on Friday, April 18, at 8p, Cartoon Network has planned a week of Ben 10 programming.  The week begins with a Ben 10 marathon on Sunday April 13, followed on April 14 at 8p with a Ben 10 special (30 minutes) featuring the results of the ultimate Ben 10 fan challenge.  On the next two nights, April 15 and 16 at 8p, Cartoon Network will air a previously unseen episode of Ben 10 and an enhanced version of animated movie Ben 10: The Secret of the Omnitrix respectively. Similarly a version of the live-action movie Ben 10: Race Against Time on April 17 at 8p.  Following its primetime premiere, the new series Ben 10: Alien Force takes up residence in its regularly scheduled time period Saturday mornings at 10a.

Coolabi Productions has received a second season pick-up for its preschool 2D cel animated series The Large Family from CBeebies.  The new season of The Large Family will include 26×11 new episodes. Global sales for the series is being handled by BBC Worldwide, which is in the midst of planning a licensing and merchandising campaign. Elsewhere, Coolabi was recently commissioned by Nick Jr. UK to produce the new animated series Poppy Cat, and has also entered into a development deal with Disney Channel’s London original programming group.

Copyright Promotions Licensing Group has been tapped to handle the rights to the 3D CGI animated series Hairy Scary (52×13) in France.  Created by Alphanim, Hair Scary is aimed at K6-8 and co-produced by Alphanim, France 3, Super RTL (Germany) and Europool.  The series, which follows the adventures of a hairy Boy and a Scary Girl (Willow and Constance) and their classmates as they learn about life on their planet, currently airs on France 3, Disney Channel Italy, and is scheduled to bow on Super RTL in 3Q 2008.

Todobebe ( www.todobebe.com ) is re-launching its newly re-designed and expanded website.  Targeted to Hispanic families with K0-5 years old, Todobebe offers parents a range of tools to help raise their kids and have fun with them too.  The newly re-furbished Spanish-language website allows users (men and women) to choose and receive content including videos, expert information, forums and celebrity interviews, on a range of issues from infertility to preschool-aged kids.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Granada Ventures has signed three new global licensing deals for Bella Sara ( www.bellasara.com ), the Girl 5-12-aimed trading cards and online experience.  HarperCollins acquires the global master publishing rights to Bella Sara, including all publishing formats (e.g. story, activity, and illustrated novels). Codemasters is named as the global video game publisher (excluding Scandinavia) and plans to launch Bella Sara based video games for Nintendo DS and PC in time for holiday 2008. Sababa Toys takes on the role as master toy licensee in all English-speaking territories, and will develop a line of toys including collectable miniature horses, 5″ figurines, plush and games set to be available for fall 2008.
