Cynopsis

06/23/06

Good Morning. It’s Friday, June 23, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The Tribune Broadcasting stations have picked up Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution’s off-net CBS comedy Two and a Half Men for a fall 2007 launch.  The deal calls for two daily runs M-F, weekend plays, as well as the rights to stream five episodes each week on the station’s website free to viewers for the first three years of the deal. WBDTD keeps a minute and a half of barter commercial time in each of the two daily episodes, while the station gets 5-1/2 minutes in each ep. Commercial avails in the weekend airings is split 50/50.  As for any revenue derived from the daily internet plays, it will be shared between the stations and Warner Bros. When it kicks off its syndication run, Two and a Half Men will have 96 episodes in the can.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

You know, I was planning on catching CBS‘ newest series Tuesday Night Book Club but missed its first two weeks on the air, and now it’s too late.  The network has pulled the show and plans to replace it with repeats of 48 Hours Mystery.  For its initial outing on June 13, the premiere delivered just 5 million viewers.  The second week dipped to just 4 million.  I guess I wasn’t the only one who missed it.

In addition to its library of 72 Futurama episodes previously purchased from Twentieth Century Fox Television last fall, Comedy Central now has acquired the rights to air 13 new episodes that will be soon be produced. The new episodes will have the voice talent of Billy West, Katey Sagal and John DiMaggio. The Emmy-winning animated comedy is from Matt Groening and David X. Cohen and will be added to Comedy Central’s schedule in 2008.

The series finale of Huff on Showtime airs this Sunday.  The network has decided not to return with the Sony Pictures TV series for another season. Huff seems destined to become the pay cable network’s version of Arrested Development.  Hailed by critics, nominated multiple times for Emmy awards, and an adoring, albeit miniature fan base, but just not enough ratings steam to keep it going.

GSN will premiere a new photo pop culture game series, Starface, on August 1 at 930p, hosted by a face from the past – Danny Bonaduce. The show pits three contestants against each other as they answer questions about celebrities. Starface is created by Jeff Rothberg, executive produced by Pat Finn, Brennan Huntington and Rothberg and produced by Rubicon Entertainment.

The action sports network, Fuel TV has several new and returning series premiering this summer:

  • 10 Count – July 2 at 8p, returning series that highlights the top ten action sports and talented athletes. Hosted by Mike Carter and produced by RedSquare Productions.
  • Drive Thru: South Africa – July 2 at 830p, this new series is the third installment of the surfing adventure series Drive Thru. This one follows pro surfers as they find the best waves off the coasts of South Africa. Produced by Greg Browning.
  • American Misfits – July 2 at 9p, a sketch comedy about skateboarding and the colorful individuals who populate this sport.
  • Nitro Circus – July 2 at 930p, chronicles Pastrana and his FMX crew of Nitro Circus clowns as they race around Pastrana’s motocross backyard testing ground.
  • Pull – August 13 at 930p, season two continues its coverage of the wake sports by visiting exotic locations around the world and its personalities. Produced by Alliance Wakeboard Magazine.

MyNetworkTV has added WPXX/Memphis, owned by ION Media Networks, to its stable of affiliates. Scheduled to launch on September 5, MyNetworkTV is now cleared in 150 markets that represent 85% of the U.S. TV households.

* PRODUCTION / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT *

The CW has cast Brittany Daniel in CBS Paramount Network TV’s The Game.  The Grammnet Prods spinoff of UPN’s series Girlfriends, is about the the lives of pro football players.  Daniel will play the wife of one of players, a role initially cast with Jennifer Baxter in the pilot episode.

Casting Call: The producers of Nanny 911 on FOX are looking for families in the NY, PA, NJ and CT area with out of control or ultra-spoiled children under the age 18 to appear on the show and be transformed into “perfect” angels. All types of families are needed: blended families with step kids, foster families, divorced families, single mom or single dad, kids with special needs and even families who have their own nanny. To set up an appointment to be taped for consideration, email: [email protected] and put “Nanny 911” Season 3-Brenda in the subject line. Write a brief explanation about your family and why they should appear on the show.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

ABC News Radio has promoted Heidi Oringer to Executive Director/Entertainment Programming. Heidi will focus on creating new features and entertainment programming specials, while continuing her on-air duties as an entertainment reporter and analyst and managing a staff of entertainment correspondents across the U.S.

David Manougian has been appointed CEO of The Golf Channel, where he previously served as President. Under David’s leadership since January 2002, the network has increased domestic distribution 89%, advertising sales have doubled and more than 30 new series and original programs have debuted. He was paramount in making The Golf Channel the exclusive cable home of the PGA Tour starting in 2007.

Paul Verna has been hired at The Orchard in the new position of Director/Corporate Communications. He will lead the company’s global media relations, corporate communications, marketing communications efforts, as well as an internal PR team and agencies around the world. Based in New York, he will report to Jason Ojalvo, VP/Marketing and Business Development.

Friday Fun Fact:
The biggest badminton shuttlecock in the world can be found on the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum, in Kansas City – 48 times larger than the real thing at 18 feet tall and weighing 5,000 pounds

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1992-Throughout the 1980s, federal prosecutors tried to get a criminal conviction against New York crime boss John Gotti, but they could never get the charges to stick. On this day in 1992, after years of beating the rap, the “Teflon Don” is sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Answer to Yesterday’s trivia question: I am a real life relative to one of Edna Garrett’s girls. She landed a job accidentally when our car broke down on the way to Hollywood. Who am I?   PHILIP McKEON, brother to Facts of Life’s Nancy McKeon.    Kudos to: Kim Dwelley-WFXT/Boston; Kathy Doyle-Universal McCann/Birmingham MI; Tom Winiarski-TBS TNT/NY; Jon May-WUTV/WNYO/Buffalo; Roz Seibold-Tucson Hearing Clinics/Tucson; Adam Leston-WDJT/WMLW/Milwaukee; Carolyn Feltner-Busch Media Group/St Louis; Jennifer Beshires-KSAT/San Antonio; Len Klatt-Premiere Radio Networks/LA; Tara Sandler-Pie Town Productions/North Hollywood CA; Cat Jossell-Synergy Management/Calabasas CA; Alyssa Weisberg-Alyssa Weisberg Casting/LA; Mary Jezierski-Drink Dream Productions/Madrid; Andrew Makarewicz-CineGroupe/Montreal;  Marisa Fusaro-Mountain Road Productions/Ottawa; Caroline A. Today’s Trivia Question:  On this show Megan and David work together, are married and shared a boss named Peter. What show is this?
