CNN picked up the non-fiction series Crimes of the Century from executive producer Ridley Scott. The program will air during weekends on CNN/US beginning this year and examines major historic news events from the Madoff scandal to the Oklahoma City bombing. Scott Free Productions produced the series. This acquisition along with offerings such as Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown and Morgan Spurlock’s Inside Man (which will both air on weekends beginning this April), are outside the realm of CNN’s news-only programming. Some see these acquisitions as an attempt to boost ratings for the network, which saw some erosion over recent months. Says Vinnie Malhotra, SVP/Development and Acquisitions at CNN Worldwide, “This acquisition is another step in our mission to broaden the scope of programming on CNN and give viewers even more of the stories and information that impact their lives.”
Ready to scare up some more viewers, Lifetime has ordered 10 episodes of the drama Witches of East End starring Julia Ormond, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Rachel Boston, and Madchen Amick. With a planned premiere for later this year, Lifetime partnered with Fox 21 to adapt the project for television which is based on Melissa de la Cruz’s novel of the same name. Rob Sharenow, EVP/Programming of Lifetime Networks said, “We’ve been thrilled about Witches of East End and its powerful premise since the moment we bought the property, and our friends at Fox 21 helped develop it for television. This is one of the most exciting ensemble casts we’ve seen and the whole show is fresh, original and just right for Lifetime.”
Celebrating its 10th broadcasting anniversary in the US, Here TV (www.heretv.com) will be continuing to provide LGBT stories. Yesterday Here TV revealed its New Frontiers Film Project, a call for recently completed film and television fare focused on the LGBT experience. Selected projects will air on the network across its cable and online platforms throughout 2013. Filmmakers can submit DVDs to New Frontiers c/o Here TV, 120 West 45th Street, Suite 2300, New York, NY 10019 or send a link to [email protected]. For more information about the New Frontiers Film Project, go to http://heretv.com/newfrontiers/.
Programming Alert: Bounce TV’s COO Jonathan Katz launches the network’s Black History Month tribute today with the Our History programming initiative. “Our perspective on Black History Month is truly unique, because our founders, Martin Luther King III and Ambassador Andrew Young, are history-makers themselves. Their involvement allows the network to produce compelling programming such as the original short-form series “Memories of My Father” in which Martin shares his personal stories about his father, MLK Jr.,” commented Katz. Dr. Mehmet Oz, host of syndicated talk show The Dr. Oz Show from Sony Pictures Television Distribution, will lend his expertise for iVillage during the week of February 4th as part of the site’s 2013 Guest Editor series. iVillage, one of the largest communities for women online will showcase Dr. Oz’s opinions and advice on such themes as Melt the Fat Away and Dr. Oz’s Flat Belly Diet. This is the second year of the series, which featured First Lady Michelle Obama last year. “What better way to start the New Year than with a focus on health and weight loss,” said Liz Zack, Editorial Director at iVillage. “Dr. Oz is such a wealth of knowledge on this subject and we’re also excited to mine our smart community for their best ideas on living healthier and happier lives.”
Discovery Channel’s series Fast n’ Loud gears up for a second season debuting February 18 at 9p. Car enthusiasts Richard Rawlings and Aaron Kaufman are back and ready to find automobile treasures in Texas junkyards and more.
A new season of The Dead Files is back on Travel Channel’s lineup beginning March 8 at 10p. The all-new episodes feature the duo of retired homicide detective Steve DiSchiavi and medium Amy Allan as they partner to investigate more accounts of haunted activity across America. The Dead Files is produced by Painless Entertainment, Inc. for Travel Channel.
Clarification: FX’s BrandX with Russell Brand premieres February 7 at 1130 and then will move up by a half-hour to 11p starting February 28.
Viewers can stay cozy inside and enjoy a month-long free preview of Outdoor Channel and its suite of outdoor lifestyle programming offered by DISH that began January 30 through February 27. The free preview is available on DISH through the Outdoor Sports Package.
HBO is collaborating with Girls executive producers/co-showrunners Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner as writers on a new project about the life of Bergdorf Goodman personal shopper Betty Halbreich based on her forthcoming memoir, All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go. Halbreich has dressed the rich and famous from the Manhattan department store since the 1970s, including such celebrities as Meryl Streep, Sarah Jessica Parker and Katie Couric.
She’s baaack! Roseanne Barr has inked a development deal with Universal Television to develop, star and produce a comedy for NBC. She’ll be working once again with co-EP Steven Greener, who produced her short-lived Lifetime series Roseanne’s Nuts and will serve as EP on the new series along with her. Last year, NBC passed on Barr’s comedy pilot Downwardly Mobile.
ABC okayed a drama pilot titled Lucky 7 about seven employees of a service station in Queens who win a lottery jackpot. The drama is based on a British series The Syndicate, which is in its second season on BBC One. David Zabel and Jason Richman are on board to write the one-hour project produced by ABC Studios and Amblin TV. Zabel and Richman will serve as EPs along with Amblin’s Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey and Steven Spielberg.
Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston has signed a first-look deal with Sony Pictures Television, the same studio that produces Breaking Bad, which ends at the end of this summer on AMC. Cranston will develop and produce and possibly star in a variety of new series projects.
