CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

02/17/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 17, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The CW reached out to potential affiliates via letter this week, outlining the deal points of an affiliation with the network, including the local/national ad time in primetime as well as reverse compensation, termed in the letter as programming fees, according to Broadcasting & Cable.  As for commercial inventory, the CW plans to offer its stations 3 minutes in primetime, and 5 minutes in daytime.  All stations must run the shows in pattern and there will be no squeezing of programming or credits for promotional or sales purposes.  The CW has asked the potential affiliates to submit proposals outlining some basic terms they would agree to, such as length of affiliation, how they would help support the launch and promotion of the new network, and those pesky programming fees.

*MORE GOOD STUFF*WB Program Change:  Check your calendars – Everwood returns to the Monday 9p time period on March 20, not the previously announced March 27.

If you’re looking for Get This Party Started on UPN Tuesday nights, you may as well give it up.  UPN has sidelined the show for the remainder of the February sweep.  Next week, the movie Black Knight has been scheduled, and the following week repeat episodes of Girlfriends and Half & Half will air 9-10p.  No word yet if Party will return next month.

2.1 million on Wednesday night between 6p-7p wanted to know what Vice President Dick Cheney had to say about the shooting accident in Texas, and Fox News’s Special Report with Brit Hume was the happy recipient of both the interview and the audience. For Special Report, it was the most watched show of the year, up from its average viewing audience of 1.5 million.

New Line Television is bringing Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World back to syndication for Fall 2006 with 52 episodes.  The show in being offered on a straight barter basis, tho kicks off with a two-hour barter-free premiere.  This series last aired in syndication from 1999-2002.

VH1 and IFILM have ordered up six more episodes of Web Junk 20. The show airs on Fridays at 1130p, with host Patrice O’Neal, and thru the first five outings has averaged a .5 A18-49.

Amazon is looking to take on iTunes in the music download business, according to the Wall Street Journal.  The online retailer is in the throws of negotiations with several record labels, including Universal, Sony BMG, Warner Bros. and EMI, as well as with manufactures of digital music players about a new subscription-based music download service that could debut as early as this summer.  Amazon will offer music at a discounted price, or perhaps a monthly flat fee, possibly with deals similar to some mobile phone carriers, where in exchange for a long-term subscription agreement a consumer might receive an Amazon-branded digital music player.  The WSJ suggested that Samsung would be the ones to produce the branded digital players of the retailer.  Amazon is also considering providing subscribers with a device that is pre-loaded with music that would be based on a consumers previous music purchases on its website.

A Cynopsis question for you:  This time of year, between the Super Bowl and the Olympics, there are a lot of new advertising campaigns on the air – some great, some not so great.  The question is this:  Of all the TV commercials you’ve seen in your entire life, which one is your favorite above all others?  I’ll get you started.  My favorite is an old Volkswagen ad.  Black and white.  Pre-dawn, blizzard conditions.  One lone VW driving down the road.  Announce:  “Did you ever wonder how the snow plow driver gets to the snow plow?” as the VW pulls up to the snow plow garage.  Simple, clever.  You guys know TV better than anyone, so your choices will be interesting to see.  Send your pick here with TV AD in the subject line.  I’ll collect them and feed them back to you next week.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Fox has ordered a script of an untitled comedy project starring Canadian comedian Russell Peters, from Warner Bros. TV and Fox Broadcasting.

MTV has ordered 20 episodes of a new series called Why Can’t I Be You, where someone will get the chance to become someone else for 48 hours. Hosted by MTV’s Nick Zano, the show is expected to launch in the weekday afternoon block, per Hollywood Reporter.

CBS is looking at a new reality project called A Hero’s Welcome, with host Patrick Duffy.  This show reunites people with those that saved their lives, and shows what would have happened if the hero hadn’t happened along at just the right time. According to Variety, each episode will include two parts – the recreation of the near fatal incident, and the reunion of all involved. The project will be produced by A. Smith & Co.

Casting Notes …

NBC‘s untitled Tina Fey project, set behind-the-scenes in a weekly late night comedy show (think SNL), is in final chats with Alec Baldwin to play opposite Fey.  This would be Baldwin’s first regular TV series since ….. hang on, it was a while ago, I’ll remember it …. oh yes, Knots Landing in 1984.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Christopher Weis is named Regional Sales Manager for Spark Network Services. Weis will be responsible for all of Spark’s mobile and media services.

Andy Kubitz is promoted to VP/Program Planning & Scheduling, CBS, and Noriko Gee upped to Manager/Programming Planning & Scheduling. Both report to Kelly Kahl, Senior EVP/Programming Operations.

Jean Prewitt, Pres/CEO of the Independent Film & Television Alliance, has been elected to Chair FilmL.A.’s Board of Directors.

* RATINGS *Wednesday- A18-49 Analysis:   Fox led on Wednesday night with an overall 8.3/20 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research.  NBC was #2 with a 5.5/13, followed by ABC 4.6/11, CBS 2.9/7, Univ 1.9/5, WB 1.3/3, Tele 0.9/2, UPN 0.4/1.  At 8p Fox’s American Idol trimmed the field down to 12 women and 12 men, and considerably more than that tuned in to the tune of 11.7/29, nearly tripling NBC’s 8-9p share for the Olympics. At 9p Lost on ABC jumped out in front with a 7.6/17, three share points ahead of the Olympics. And at 10p NBC earned gold with a 6.4/16, six share points ahead of ABC’s Invasion.
