Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, August 31, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing. 

Kids in Russia are getting a new TV channel this week, when the Russian State TV and Radio company (VGTRK) debuts the Bibigon channel.  Bibigon, which gets its name from a fairytale character of the same name created by Russian author K. Chukovsky (spelling varies Chukovskij, Chukovskiy and so on), will be available via NTV+ satellite TV.  A selection of the programming content from Bibigon will also be televised on other channels, including Rossiya and Kultura.

Walt Disney is launching Jetix On Demand in Asia on Singapore’s mioTV with 20 hours of content.  Each month, 5 hours will be refreshed with shows such as W.I.T.C.H., Get Ed, Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go!, and Alpha Teens on Machines being the first to appear.  This will be the first time the branded Jetix service will be offered in Asia.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon will premiere The Naked Brothers Band’s first music video, If That’s Not Love, on Labor Day, Monday, September 3 at 5p.  Leading into the debut of the video will be an 8-minute long behind-the-scenes of the video.  In all the 11-minute package (combo of video and behind-the-scenes) will launch simultaneously across Nick’s digital networks The N and Nicktoons Network and around the world on Nickelodeon UK, Australia, Latin America and via its program sales partner Canada’s YTV.  Additionally, both will be streamed online at TurboNick, and will also run on The-N.com, mtv.com and vh1.com.  Nickelodeon and Columbia Records will release the album, also titled If That’s Not Love, on October 9, 2007.

It may look like back-to-school time, but it’s also prom time, again.  Blinkx, the video search engine, has inked a content deal with Vuguru, Michael Eisner’s indie new media studio, for the sequel to Prom Queen.  Under the agreement blinkx will host and distribute the sequel to the teen-targeted webisode series Prom Queen: Summer Heat, and will share revenue with Vuguru based on number of views.  The first of the new two-minute episodes debuted yesterday, and new episodes will premiere daily for the next several weeks, for free, now at http://www.blinks.com.  The initial Prom Queen series launched in April 2007, and was watched by 15+ million people.

This holiday weekend Nicktoons Network celebrates, or bemoans depending on your vantage point, the return to school with the Back To School Before You Go Back To School Weekend.  The BTSBYGBTSW (way more fun that way) event, which takes place September 1 & 2, 6p-9p, and September 3, 12p-8p, features network series launches, including Wayside and The secret Show, as well as episode premieres of shows such as Edgar & Ellen and Kappa Mikey.

While MTV will only air the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards once this year, on September 9, at 9p, live from The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, the network will offer fans a range of other ways to take part in the annual event.  MTV will air three different “remixes” of the VMAs:  the Celebrity Commentary edition will feature artists talking about the backstage goings on and top moments of the show, on September 11, at 10p; two days later the Viewer’s Choice remix, based what viewers vote on as their favorite show elements (vote at vma.mtv.com) will air September 13, at 6p; and a third remix featuring all of the musical performances from the show as well as those that didn’t air from the Fantasy suites and the VMA Weekend and VMA pre-show is scheduled for September 15, at 11p.  A range of other VMA-related content is planned for MTV Mobile on Sprint TV (artist texting, voting, news, clips), the virtual VMAs on MTV On Demand (news, crazy moments, VMA hosts, best/worst dressed), and vma.mtv.com (voting, live artist blogging, performances) among others.  Executive produced by Dave Sirulnick, the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards is directed by Hamish Hamilton.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Disney’s Hollywood Records will release The Cheetah Girls’ first studio album, entitled TCG, on September 25, 2007.  The three members of The Cheetah Girls, Adrienne Bailon, Sabrina Bryan, and Kiely Williams, co-wrote six of the songs on CD, and the group plans to record the album in Spanish for release in spring 2008.  Additionally, the group will be featured in Disney Channel’s Twitches 2 movie this fall, and they will star in The Cheetah Girls 3 Movie, which will be shot in India next year.  The Cheetah Girls are scheduled to go on tour in 2008-9.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

MTV Networks Latin America (MTVNLA) upped Alvaro Paes de Barros to SVP/Distribution, MTVNLA and GM/Viacom Networks Brazil. A 7-year MTVNLA veteran, Alvaro will manage content distribution strategy for Pay TV in Latin America and oversee Viacom Networks Brazil, which includes Nickelodeon, VH1, MTV Hits, MTV Jams and Vh1 Soul, and the Nick Turbo and Neopets online properties.  Based in Miami, he will continue reporting to Pierluigi Gazzolo, President/MTVNLA and will manage distribution teams in Miami, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo and Mexico City.  Alvaro was previously VP/Distribution for MTVNLA.
