CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

04/21/06

Good Morning. It’s Friday, April 21, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

If at 8 o’clock last night you were one of the precious few who turned to NBC to watch Celebrity Cooking Showdown, you heard the announcement that to see the final episodes of the Celebrity Cooking you’d have to go to NBC.com.   Unceremoniously yanked from the schedule at the last minute, NBC instead aired Will & Grace followed by My Name is Earl.  At NBC.com the information is conflicting: in one pot it says the finale two episodes of Celebrity Cooking will air “exclusively” online.  In the other pot the Saturday lineup includes the last two episodes airing from 8-10p. Your guess is as good as mine.

Tonight’s Premiere:
Style Network:  Modern Girl’s Guide to Life at 9p
E!:  The Chelsea Handler Show at 1030p
Showtime:  Family Business at 1130p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *As the NFL Network preps for its upfront presentation next week in NYC, it has reached out to Bryant Gumbel and Cris Collinsworth to try to sign them to call the Thursday night games in the upcoming season.  The kick off game for the network will be on Thanksgiving night between the Denver Broncos at the Kansas City Chiefs.   No official response yet from either.

Oxygen will launch two new reality series this summer – The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency, and Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty.  10 episodes have been ordered for the Dickinson project which is scheduled to launch in June.  The latter, according to Variety, has a 13 episode order and features Doherty being hired by individuals who feel they may be stuck in a bad relationship with a boyfriend, a boss or a friend.  In swoops Doherty who goes undercover to assess the situation, and if warranted, manipulates a breakup.

AMC has started production of a new one-hour original drama Mad Men, about New York advertising executives circa 1960. Produced by @radical media, the show is slated to debut in 2007.

And now this from the We’ve-Heard-of-Everything-But-Never-Thought-This-Would-Happen Department: PBS has launched MooTube.com chronicling the bailiwick of the Texas Longhorn cattle. Cow-cams will show a bovine’s eye-view of what happens on the range from the necessary fly-flicking and grass eating to the potentially more exciting locking of horns. The Cow of the Day also profiles a daily star’s vital statistics. Is this good TV?  Tough to say. However, what will likely be good TV based on their previous House episodes, PBS begins its new eight-part hands-on-history series Texas Ranch House on May 1-4, featuring a group of men and women experiencing the harsh realities of 1867 Texas.

On May 1 at 7p, TLC premieres Jamie’s School Lunch Project, starring mega foodie Jamie Oliver. Jamie is challenged in this series to produce proper meals for 21,000 South London school kids without benefit of a large budget, his favorite spices, and all in a time crunch. At the same time he faces the disapproval of lunch lady, Nora, who wants everything to stay the same. Three additional episodes follow the premiere on Mondays through the end of May.

NBC Season Finales:
May 2:  Teachers at 930p
May 7:  Crossing Jordan at 10p (also its 100th episode)
May 11: My Name is Earl 840p and The Office at 920p (part of an NBC Super-Sized Thursday)
May 12:  Las Vegas at 9p
May 14:  The West Wing series finale at 8, and Law & Order: Criminal Intent at 10p
May 16:  Scrubs at 9p, Law & Order: SVU at 10p
May 17:  Law & Order at 10p
May 18:  Will & Grace series finale at 9p, ER at 10p
May 22:  The Apprentice at 9p, Medium at 10p

Cynopsis Question/Answer:  When Universal Pictures’ film United 93 opens on April 28, will you go see it?  82% said no, while just 18% said yes.  You were fairly definite, regardless of your answer; tho the No’s were more in the “adamant” column.  Reasons cited ranged from “it’s too soon” and “it’s too painful” and “the memories are too painful”, to “I’ll watch it later on DVD when I can stop intermittently and breathe.”   Among those who said yes were many who said they felt the heroes aboard Flight 93 were due the respect. An overwhelming number of Yes respondents mentioned it was not too early for such a film, but rather an important reminder that we should not forget the horrors of 9/11 even for a single day.  Interestingly, a handful said they’d consider going to see it if Universal turned over all the revenue to the victims’ families.  And lastly, speaking of Universal, no respondents from that company said they would be missing this film.

A Cynopsis housekeeping note:  On May 1st Cynopsis will be moving to a new server and launching our new website at www.cynopsis.com. The new site will include the Video Podcast which you can watch from your browser without downloading, and the audio podcasts, as well as the daily editions, much easier subscribe pages, Cynopsis media kits, current classifieds and a better archive.  All of that’s great, but to be sure there is no interruption in the delivery of the daily edition(s) to you, please be sure to add [email protected] to your address book (the address from which Cynopsis is generated), and notify your IT Dept that Cynopsis will be coming from this new IP address:  72.3.240.239.  This latter part is particularly important, especially for those companies with spam and junk mail filters, which is most of you.  The easiest thing – just cut and paste this paragraph and forward along to the guys in IT. They can holler back to me if there’s a question.  Remember – this will be effective as of May 1st. Thanks!

Friday Fun Fact:
A car traveling at a constant speed of 60 miles per hour would take more than 48 million years to reach the nearest star (other than our Sun), Proxima Centauri. This is about 685,000 average human lifetimes.

Protests continued in the weeks that followed, with the students joined by workers, intellectuals, and civil servants.
