Cynopsis: Kids!
4/20/07
Good morning. It’s Friday, April 20, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Microsoft has upped its commitment to close the digital divide around the world and plans to begin the process with several efforts, including affordable education software suite for students for use by students in developing nations. Microsoft unveiled the Microsoft Student Innovation Suite, which will be released in the second half of 2007 for US$3 to governments around the world that subsidize or purchase and give Windows-based PCs directly to primary and secondary students for use at home and for schoolwork.
“Kid you gotta have a gimmick, if you wanna get ahead.” And with that, Harry Potter will get the 3D treatment for the Imax DMR version of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which will be released July 13, 2007, simultaneous to regular theaters. Warner Bros. and Imax Corporation have confirmed that some 20 minutes at the end of the movie will being converted into Imax 3D. Last year Superman Returns earned bragging rights as the first live-action movie to have select scenes converted into 3D by Imax.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
With great power comes great responsibility, and a drink at intermission … Yep, following the rumors Marvel released a statement yesterday confirming that Spider-Man is headed to the Great White Way … as a musical no less. The news might sound strange, until you learn that the Spider-Man musical will be directed by Julie Taymor, who directed The Lion King on Broadway, with music and lyrics by U2’s Bono and The Edge. Hello Entertainment, Marvel Entertainment and Sony are producing the Spider-Man musical, which doesn’t have an official name or opening date yet. Marvel did say that a reading for the show would take place this summer, and Playbill.com reports that reading will take place in NYC this July 12 and 13.
Laurence Fishburne will lend his voice to The Silver Surfer in Fox’s feature film, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, per Variety. The movies is set for release June 15
And the news that I have been waiting for, though I may be alone, Racer X will be played by Matthew Fox in the live action Fox movie, Speed Racer, slated for May 2008, according to Hollywood Reporter. How do I feel about the choice? Well, to start with I don’t watch Lost, followed by my feeling he seems to have the right chin. Also, Australian actor Kick Gurry joins the cast as Sparky, Speedy’s mechanic.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Genius Products has completed a US distribution pact with Animal Planet and TLC, thus expanding its relationship with Discovery Communications. The planned rollout of Animal Planet and TLC properties by Genius includes the release of 12 titles a year beginning in 4Q 2007, including individual programs as well as series. Genius already handles US distribution for Discovery Kids.
V-me, the new Spanish-language digital network, has inked a carriage deal with Dish Network. Under the deal Dish Network has added V-Me to its basic tier and all DishLatino programming packages. V-me’s line-up includes kids/caregivers (36+ hours/week), family, entertainment, public affairs and lifestyle programming.

Finally, over the weekend all five Huxtable kids will host together, on Saturday reviewing their favorite dance moves and the like, followed on Sunday that will feature their favorite episodes with cameo appearances. During the marathon, viewers can log on to nickatnite.com to participate in audience polls and answer questions appearing onscreen throughout the episodes. mtvU, the college network, and ROO, an internet video company, have teamed-up to provide free access to a customizable video player and a range of on-demand content channels to 500+ online college newspapers in mtvU’s College Publisher network. With the ROO player will allow online student newspapers to distribute its own video content. A nice touch is that the video player is unbranded, so each school can create a look and feel that reflects its school newspaper site.

Answer to Yesterday’s trivia question: Here’s the description – you give me the character’s name. Professor Everett was a widow and college math professor, with three children. After going through a slew of nannies, there arrived one day a woman with a distinctly British accent who seemed to be just right. What was the nanny’s full name? PHOEBE FIGALILLY, from Nanny and the Professor. Kudos to: Howard Rosenstein-Meredith Integrated Marketing/NY; Rosie Smith-Stelor Productions/Darnestown; Ed Goode-Connelly Partners/Boston; Tom Boyd-WGN-TV/Chicago; Lee Williams-Boomstone Animation/ Ottawa
Today’s Trivia Question: On the show Angry Beavers, what are the full names of the two beavers? (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
