4/13/07

Good Morning, it’s Friday, April 13, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

CBS made a flurry of distribution deals with many of the best-known video portals on the web to form what it’s calling the CBS Interactive Network. CBS shows such as CSI, Letterman, Survivor and The CBS Evening News will be offered free to consumers in an ad-supported format. The revenue split wasn’t disclosed, but sources say the network was able to secure deals in the neighborhood of 90% for CBS and 10% for the distributor. The content will be restricted to U.S.-based sites only, with the exception of clips and sports programming. CBS’ new partners include:

  • AOL, to be featured on video.aol.com
  • Microsoft, at MSN Video via the MSN Video Player
  • CNET Networks, on TV.com, which presents an interactive environment for fans to discuss shows
  • Comcast, on sites including current subscriber homepage Comcast.net and planned portal Fancast
  • Joost, via the Joost player that enables content providers to embeds links back to related websites
  • Bebo, a global social networking site
  • Brightcove, a popular video channel destination as well as a syndication service
  • Netvibes, which will create four CBS “universes,” CSTV, CBS News, ShowBuzz and CBS SportsLine
  • SlingMedia, delivered via enhanced SlingPlayer software, SlingCatcher and a planned video portal
  • Veoh, on branded, customized channels in DVD-quality on Veoh.com and the Veoh Player

Akamai Technologies will deliver the video for the new venture. The network said it will continue its existing relationships with Yahoo!, iTunes, Microsoft’s Xbox, Amazon’s UnBox and “many others,” presumably referring to YouTube.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

YouTube launched You Choose ’08 Spotlight, a forum for presidential candidates to interact with voters through user-generated video. Candidates are encouraged to “peel back the political veneer to develop their ideas and identities with voters in a personal, interactive way,” according to Steve Grove, head of News and Politics for YouTube. Twelve candidates have agreed to participate, beginning with Mitt Romney (see the website of the day).

Hearst Newspapers signed a deal with Brightcove to create a series of ad-supported internet video channels planned for later this year. Brightcove’s technology simplifies the process of soliciting, reviewing and posting user-generated video. The San Francisco Chronicle and the Houston Chronicle are expected to be the first two papers to debut channels later this year. Brightcove is one of the online video companies in which Hearst has invested in recent months. Others include MobiTV, Slingbox and NewsMarket.

TVGuide.com is getting into the breaking news business. It launched a new feature yesterday highlighting breaking news stories about television contributed by reporters and editors from TV Guide magazine, TV Guide Channel and TV Guide Online. The category remained fairly static during its first day in operation; however, with the same three top stories in place from morning until night.

Veoh Networks announced a new feature to its internet television service–Veoh Player Home Delivery. Users can activate the feature from any computer at Veoh.com and choose to have videos sent to the Veoh player on their home desktops, acting as a remote-location DVR.

Sundance Channel will make a selection of its The Green block of original programming available on iTunes ahead of its April 17 premier on air. Beginning April 10 the first episode of Big Ideas for A Small Planet will be available as a free download with subsequent episodes selling for $1.99 each. A “season pass” option will also sell for $19.99.

PBS series America at a Crossroads will feature a number of interactive features including the use of video diaries on a companion website developed by Alexandria, Va.-based Bean Creative. The site features a detailed interactive timeline providing extensive background about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and politics in the Middle East.

We Television launched a companion site to Get Married, a reality show on wedding trends premiering April 15 and 9:30 ET/PT. The site features interactive elements such as polls, idea swaps, links to local wedding planners and clips on demand from the show.

Guinness World Records partnered with Joost to distribute original video content through its next-generation online platform. More than 35 hours of the UK show Ultimate Guinness World Records will be featured initially, with additional programming to be added each month.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Comcast EVP David Cohen criticized proponents of net-neutrality regulations in a speech given to the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, saying companies such as Yahoo and Google only seek to protect their profits. Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and eBay have lobbied for a law that would prevent high-speed network owners such as Comcast from discriminating against certain content or service providers, amounting to a “YouTube” tax for heavy video streamers.

FCC chairman Kevin Martin is circulating a second proposal to commissioners to help ease the transition to digital for broadcasters in 2009. The first proposal would expand “must carry” rules to require cable operators to carry both analog and digital signals for homes that don’t have digital set-tops. The second would require MSOs to carry broadcaster’s multicast signals, even if they are leased to a qualified minority broadcaster. Both call for the FCC to issues rules to these effects.

Akamai Technologies acquired Red Swoosh for $15 million. Red Swoosh uses peer-to-peer technology to speed the transfer of files over the internet, competing with firms such as Bit Torrent and Pando

Yahoo is close to closing in on its biggest sports acquisition since its purchase of Mark Cuban’s Broadcast.com, according to paidcontent.org, with the college sports network Rivals.com in its sites. Rivals focuses on college football and basketball recruiting and supplies content to USAToday.com, AOL Sports, SportingNews.com, MSNBC.com and SI.com. The price is rumored to be hovering around $100 million.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Online advertising faces a number of operational, measurement and personnel challenges, according a speech given by Digitas CEO David Kenney at the Interactive Advertising Bureau board dinner this week. Clients would like to spend more in the digital space but can’t due problems such as operational bottlenecks (inefficient ordering, billing, reconciliation, etc.), inconsistency of online metrics and a lack of talented people to run online campaigns.

Online video portal GoFish Corp. formed an alliance with branded entertainment specialist Mandalay Integrated Media Entertainment to create new opportunities for advertisers online. MIME will provide development, creation and production of sponsorship programs to GoFish, a YouTube-like user generated video site that is listed on the OTCBB market.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Nielsen and Integrated Media Measurement launched their out-of-home TV ratings measurement service, providing estimates of TV viewing at offices, fitness clubs, hotels and bars. Sample participants will be asked to carry cell phones that include TV measuring technology developed by IMMI. Panels have been established initially in New York, Chicago, L.A., Miami, Houston and Denver, with 500 participants in each location.

HDTV penetration has reached 28% of U.S. households, according to a survey of 2,090 homes by the Consumer Electronics Association in December. Consumers paid an average of $1,347 for their sets, over half of which are 40 inches or larger. Consumers are receiving HD signals through a cable set-top (40%), satellite (34%), cable without a set-top (18%), antenna (10%) internet (4%) and fiber-optic telco line (4%).

Some facts and figures about Video on Demand:

  • 84% of digital cable homes have access to VOD, with digital penetration now over 50% of cable homes.
  • 70% of Comcast digital subscribers use VOD 27 times per month on average
  • Comcast delivered 1.9 million VOD streams in 2006, up 70% from 2005
  • Comcast delivered 180 million streams last December alone; only 11% were movies.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Michael Snyder, CEO of Voice-over-IP provider Vonage, stepped down yesterday and resigned from its board of directors. The company, in the middle of a broad patent dispute with Verizon, also announced a series of cost-cutting measures to help boost its stock price, which has lost more than 80 % of its value since going public in May. Vonage Chairman and founder Jeffrey Citron will serve as interim CEO until a replacement is found.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Mad prophet of the net Jeff Jarvis and partner Peter Hauck, who were colleagues at Entertainment Weekly back in the hoary days of print journalism, were among the first to take Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney up on his YouTube challenge on their political blog Prezvid. Romney is the first candidate to post a video on YouTube’s forum, established to help create a dialogue between candidates and voters. He asks voters to submit a clip stating what they think is the most important challenge America faces. Jarvis turns the tables on him, asking the man who wants to be leader of the free world what he thinks that challenge is. As of this writing, Romney hadn’t included this response on YouTube. (While you’re at it check out Jarvis and Hauk-produced IdolCritic, featuring heady commentary on American Idol from recommender Liza Persky.)

A new website will be featured here everyday for you to check out. Some are TV-centric, some creative, some just plain strange. Email me your suggestions at [email protected] and if I include the site you mention, your name, company and city will be credited. Only one mention per calendar week, to make it fair.
