   IN THE NEWS

Fox News Media sent the Harris and Trump campaigns letters proposing a second debate between the presidential candidates in Pennsylvania on either October 24 or October 27. “This would present an opportunity for each candidate to make his or her closing arguments,” Fox News Media president & Executive Editor Jay Wallace and Vice President of Politics Jessica Loker wrote. Criteria for the Fox debate, moderated by Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, would be the same as previous outings – 90 minutes in duration with two commercial breaks, no live audience, no props or prepared notes and only Baier and MacCallum could ask questions. Podium placement and the order of closing statements would be determined by a coin flip.

Max adult animated series “Velma” has been canceled after two seasons. The series, starring Mindy Kaling, was a prequel to “Scooby-Doo” with Velma and other members of Mystery Inc. as high-school students solving mysteries in their hometown of Crystal Cove.

The USC Norman Lear Center is launching the “Pa’lante!” Latino Representation Initiative, an effort to examine the status and cultural impact of Latino representation in entertainment. The initiative will begin with quantitative and qualitative research exploring what it means to be Latino on screen. In addition to research examining on-screen representation, future phases of the Initiative may include integrating data on audiences and title performance, interviews with top Latino creatives and decision makers, research on the audience impact of powerful Latino led stories, and targeted outreach to the creative community.

In December, he will take on the role of Mufasa in Barry Jenkins’ animated “Lion King” prequel for Disney.

VIZIO is launching a new unscripted series – “Rockstar Kitchen Chronicles” – hosted by Gavin Rossdale, lead singer and songwriter of the band, Bush. Premiering in early 2025 on VIZIO’s free streaming service, WatchFree+, the series will blend music, conversation, and culinary exploration. Max Original comedy “The Sex Lives of College Girls” returns for its third season on November 21, followed by one new episode weekly at 9p through January 23. The ten-episode series is created by Emmy-nominated writer and producer Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble, and follows a group of college students at New England’s prestigious Essex College.

Three Canadians from Alberta are among the 16 tattoo artists competing in season 16 of Paramount+ reality competition series “Ink Master,” including father-son duo, Anthony and James Tex from Calgary, and Jenna Coffin from Edmonton. Premiering exclusively on Paramount+ in the U.S. and Canada on October 23, “Ink Master” is hosted by Good Charlotte lead vocalist Joel Madden, alongside judges DJ Tambe, Ryan Ashley, and Nikko Hurtado.

The HBO Original four-part documentary series “Breath of Fire” debuts October 23 at 9p on HBO. New episodes debut subsequent Wednesdays through November 13. The series follows millennial You Tube astrologer Katie Griggs and her rise to fame as the face of Kundalini yoga, based on Vanity Fair article “The Second Coming of Guru Janet.”

Amazon Prime Video gave an early season 4 renewal to action crime series “Reacher.” The third season, based on Lee Child’s best-selling novels, will debut sometime in 2025.

The new season of Drag Race Down Under” premieres November 1 on WOW Presents Plus. The ten new queens from Australia and New Zealand will compete for a cash prize and the title of “Down Under’s Next Drag Superstar” in its fourth season, now hosted by Michelle Visage.

“It’s a Sweet World,” featuring Adaeze Nwanonyiri and Lenny Rosenberg, the married duo and new owners of the iconic Bea’s Bakery in Los Angeles, will premiere October 14 on Jewish Life TV, Amazon, Tubi, Zimo, Freevee, Pluto and more. The six episodes will air weekly.

   COMING UP

NPACT, the trade association for the unscripted production industry, and software company Talent Systems will hold their first Unscripted Executive Summit on October 29 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles. The one-day event will bring together unscripted executives and producers to explore the future of the industry.

Classic TV series “Laramie” will join Family Entertainment Television’s lineup on October 28 at 2p and weekend mornings at 9a. To celebrate the launch of the show, FETV will conduct a Watch & Win Trivia Contest during a two-day, 10-episode marathon of Laramie titled “Bob’s Best” on November 2 and 3. The ten episodes were hand-picked by show star Robert Fuller, and the FETV Fan Pack awarded to trivia contest winners will contain autographed photos of the actor.

Prime Video’s new dark comedy “The Sticky” will premiere December 6. Inspired by the true story dubbed the “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist,” the series follows middle-aged syrup farmer Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale), who turns to crime when the bureaucratic authorities threaten to take away everything she loves. Jamie Lee Curtis also appears as a guest star in the series in addition to executive producing.
Jewish Life Television has partnered with The Center for Jewish History and TurnKey Pictures on documentary special “JEWCE: The Jewish Comics Experience.” The 30-minute program depicts the real-life origin story of comic books and superheroes created by pioneering Jewish Americans from World War II to the present day. The documentary will debut October 15 at 8p.

INSP is featuring great women of the west this weekend with a series of movies under the moniker – “Girls with Grit: Women of the West Movie Weekend.” The fest starts October 12 at 2p with a double feature: “Gunslinger” starring Beverly Garland and “Pioneer Woman” with Joanna Pettet, followed by Raquel Welch vehicle “100 Rifles” at 9p.

   STREAMING

Gamers are fully engaged, leaving little time for anything else including streaming video, according to Hub Entertainment Research’s annual “Gaming 360” report. Young consumers consider gaming a big part of their daily lives – 91% of those age 16-24 play mobile, console or PC video games, with half (53%) playing on a game console every day and 35% playing on a console multiple times per day. Two-thirds (67%) say their average session on a console is at least an hour, and 36% usually play for 2-3 hours at a time, leaving little time for anything else. Young gamers estimate they spend 35% of their total “screen time” playing games, and just 19% watching TV shows or movies. “These results illustrate why it’s so critical for media companies to adapt to the tastes of a new generation of consumers,” said Jon Giegengack, Principal at Hub. “There are ways for video platforms to lean into this change; Disney’s investment in Epic Games and Netflix’s growing gaming capabilities are good examples. But it’s critical to accept that young consumers won’t ‘grow out’ of their passion for things like gaming or social video.”
 

   SPORTS REPORT

Monumental Sports Network unveiled a slate of alternate broadcasts for Washington Capitals and Wizards games during the 2024-25 seasons. Available on both linear TV and popular streaming devices, the broadcasts are designed to complement the traditional game broadcast and will feature a lineup of sports broadcasting talent, D.C. media figures, Capitals and Wizards alumni, and celebrities and influencers. The Capitals and Wizards will have 20 live alternate broadcasts throughout the upcoming season, airing on newly rebranded overflow channel M2.

U.S. Ski & Snowboard has expanded its partnerships with Stifel Financial Corp and Toyota. Stifel will become the official Team Naming Partner of the Stifel U.S. It is the brand’s first team naming partnership. The expanded naming rights for both Stifel and Toyota are effective immediately.

J.P. Wiser’s has been named the Official Whisky of the NHL. As part of this partnership, the distiller will offer limited edition whiskies, co-branded promotional merchandise, in-store signings and social media contests. J.P. Wiser’s will also be visible on TV during NHL games broadcast on Rogers Sportsnet and “Prime Monday Night Hockey” on Prime Video in Canada with prominent branding on Digitally Enhanced Dasherboards during select games.

Generation Iron’s new biopic – “The Raw Story” – will premiere on Apple TV, Google Play, Amazon Prime, Vimeo On Demand, and others on October 25. The original documentary follows bodybuilder and fitness entrepreneur Chris Bumstead.

With the puck dropping on the 24/25 NHL season, Apple, the NHL and the NHLPA are spotlighting the designs of seven of the top goaltenders – Jacob Markstrom, Jeremy Swayman, Joseph Woll, Linus Ullmark, Sam Montembeault, Stuart Skinner and Thatcher Demko – all made with iPad Pro and Apple Pencil Pro. Goalie mask artists Dave Gunnarsson, Jordon Bourgeault and Travis Michael collaborated with the goalies to bring their creative vision to life. A digital series will take viewers behind the scenes to reveal the creative process of each artist with each short film focusing on the creative apps they use on iPad and the advanced features of Apple Pencil Pro.

   TECH TALK

According to Advertiser Perceptions latest study, U.S. advertisers that implement data strategies results in an average ROI increase of 35%. The research, commissioned by Claravine, shows that 79% of US advertisers agree that it is getting more difficult to show the ROI/ROAS on ad/marketing campaigns as they work with more platforms and have fewer signals to work with; two in five US advertisers already use generative AI for ad creative, and one in two are considering it. About 26% of advertisers are very confident in their ability to properly tag and track all their AI-generated assets. There also has been an increase in Excel usage to accomplish tasks, which ultimately opens companies up to greater difficulties in managing data standards, brand safety, and privacy.

Escapade Media will introduce its Revealit TV, a new AI-powered video platform that allows viewers to interact with what they see, at MIPCOM later this month. Revealit TV’s shoppable, interactive and searchable viewing experience is powered by an App armed with six cutting-edge and patented AI technologies including a voice interface, virtual try-ons and generative AI.

Colossus Media LLC will participate in the Media Rating Council’s newly formed Digital Ad Auction Standards Working Group. The initiative aims to bring greater transparency, standardization, and predictability to auction dynamics in the digital advertising marketplace and focuses on enhancing transparency in digital ad auction rules and practices, standardizing reporting of auction variables and outcomes, and developing a framework for independent audit and verification.

Video streaming and data insights platform JW Player is merging with video delivery and monetization company Connatix to form JWP Connatix. As part of the transaction, Dave Otten will become CEO of the combined company, while David Kashak will serve as its chairman. JWP Connatix will be headquartered in New York City with additional offices in London, Cluj-Napoca, Eindhoven, Skopje, and Tel Aviv.

Ad measurement company Comscore and media cartographer and founder of ESHAP Evan Shapiro have launched The Score Report, an analysis of Comscore data. Utilizing viewership data from 29 million US households, The Score Report provides insight into the comprehensive viewing experience for US consumers, reporting on the share of viewership time spent, on a household level, to advertising on television in the United States. Among Shapiro’s insights:
· Broadcast and Cable Dominate Ad Time: Legacy broadcasters and cable networks still control the vast majority of ad-supported viewing. 43.7% of total ad exposure is attributed to broadcast television alone. The top 4 included CBS with 10.2%, followed by ABC with 9.8%, NBC with 9.4%, and Fox at 5.3%.
· The Value in Local and Sports: A sizeable portion of Share of Ad Voice in 1H24 was driven by live programming, including morning and nightly news programs on each of the big three Broadcasters, and of course sports, one of the major pillars of the Broadcast audience.
· Hulu and YouTube as Streaming Leaders: Hulu and YouTube emerged as significant players in the streaming ad space, both surpassing several major cable networks in terms of ad exposure. Tubi, Fox’s AVOD platform, also outperformed many established broadcasters and streamers, demonstrating the growing influence of free, ad-supported services.

UK-based distributor DCD Rights said it has acquired three premium true crime documentary series: “Bodies in the Barrels” (produced for Nine Network Australia); “Natural Born Killer?” (for Hearst Networks EMEA and Nine Network Australia) and “Sydney’s Killer Cop” (originally created for Hearst Networks EMEA). Each of the series was produced by Perpetual Entertainment.

Sony Pictures Television – Kids (SPT – Kids) has finalized several free-to-air licensing deals for pre-school animation series “The Creature Cases” in Mexico, Brazil, Israel, France and Korea. Chapter One of “The Creature Cases” has been picked up by TV Azteca (Mexico), TV Cultura (Brazil), Hop (Israel), TF1 (France), and JEI TV (Korea), complementing the studio’s previously announced broadcast on Nickelodeon in the U.S. Additionally, “The Creature Cases” recently joined PMI Kids’ World’s expanding portfolio of IP-based toy lines including vehicles, figures and playsets that will launch in Fall 2025.

   RATINGS

ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” Week 5 matchup drew nearly 16 million viewers, the network’s most-watched MNF game – which was not simulcast on ABC – since November of the 2019 season. Over the past 10 seasons, the Saints-Chiefs clash is the fourth-most-watched “Monday Night Football” game which was not simulcast on ABC (135+ games).

Tuesday’s WWE NXT – live from St. Louis featuring a guest appearance by Randy Orto – on The CW held steady compared to last week’s premiere with 874,000 total viewers and 318,000 Adults 18-49. Going up against AEW on the same night, WWE NXT was up +166% in total viewers compared to AEW (329,000).

   EXECUTIVE MOVES

Wildlife and nature brand Love Nature promoted Alison Barrat to SVP, Head of Content. In this elevated role, Barrat will lead Love Nature’s global content strategy across original commissioning, acquisitions, programming and marketing to support growing the brand’s global reach with affiliate partners around the world.

PBS named Geoff Daniels Vice President, Programming & Development. In this role, Daniels will lead the development and execution of PBS’s programming strategy focused on science, natural history, history, and arts genres. Daniels was formerly executive director for Jackson Wild, and prior to that was EVP of Unscripted Entertainment for the London-based production company, Nutopia.

Essence Ventures, parent of Essence Communications, named Michele Ghee as Chief Content Officer. Ghee will oversee content and video strategies across all the company’s platforms, as well as each brands’ associated events and digital properties. Previously she served as the CEO of Ebony and Jet, and created BETHer during her tenure at BET.
