US ad spending will rise 6.3% in 2024, projects financial analyst Brian Wieser, up from an estimate of 5.6% made in March and 4.3% in September 2023, excluding political advertising. In his Madison and Wall newsletter, Wieser said 2024 political ad spend will be “massive,” amounting to $15.1 billion for the full year, up from $12.6 billion in 2022 and $14.1 billion in 2020.

Season two of Paramount+ prequel “Criminal Minds: Evolution” drops today, and the streamer has already ordered a third go-round. Production on season three will commence later this year.

The CW continues to chisel its scripted slate with the decision not to proceed with a fourth season of “All American: Homecoming.” “We want to thank the cast, crew, producers, NK, Marqui and everybody at Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television for their hard work and dedication in telling these important stories for three incredible seasons,” said the network in a statement. “The upcoming final season is the best yet and we cannot wait to share it with fans beginning on Monday, July 8.” CW’s “Superman & Lois” will wind up its run with its fourth season, leaving “All American” the lone scripted series standing.

Original “The Voice” coach Adam Levine is returning to the NBC singing competition for season 27, along with new coach Kelsea Ballerini. Michael Bublé, Snoop Dogg, Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani will serve as coaches for season 26, with Bublé returning in the spring, along with John Legend. Levine left the show in 2019.

Mary Katharine Ham has joined Fox News Media as a contributor. She’ll provide analysis across the network’s platforms. Ham is co-author of the book End of Discussion: How the Left’s Outrage Industry Shuts Down Debate, Manipulates Voters, and Makes America Less Free (and Fun).

CASTING

Paramount+ with SHOWTIME serial-killer-in-training drama “Dexter: Original Sin” has three new cast members: James Martinez (“Love Victor”), Christina Milian (“Falling Inn Love”), Alex Shimizu (“The Blacklist”) and Reno Wilson (“Mike & Molly”). Production commenced Wednesday in Miami, with Clyde Phillips (“Dexter”) returning as showrunner and executive producer.

The BBC has announced a three-part adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero. Adapted for screen by Rachel Bennette (“NW”) and directed by Sam Yates (“Magpie”), “Towards Zero” is produced by Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited for BBC iPlayer and BBC One, in a co-commission with BritBox International. The cast includes Jackie Clune (“Motherland”), Grace Doherty (“Call the Midwife”), Jack Farthing (“Rain Dogs”), Khalil Gharbia (“Mary & George”), Adam Hugill (“Sherwood”), Academy Award-winner Anjelica Huston (“The Grifters”), Ella Lily Hyland (“Black Doves”), Oliver Jackson-Cohen (“The Haunting of Hill House”), Mimi Keene (“Sex Education”), Clarke Peters (“The Wire”), Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”) and Anjana Vasan (“Black Mirror: Demon 79”).

French actress Marion Cotillard (“La Vie En Rose”) has joined the season four cast of Apple TV+ drama “The Morning Show” for a major story arc.

Netflix Canada limited series “Wayward” has added Toni Collette to the cast. It’s a return to the streamer for Collette, who starred in Netflix’s “Pieces of Her.”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Three-part series “Strike Zone: The Congressional Baseball Shooting” debuts Tuesday, June 11 on Fox Nation. hosted by FOX News White House correspondent Peter Doocy, the show will share the story of the June 14, 2017 shooting that occurred during a practice session for the annual Congressional baseball game.

Peacock announced a reality star-filled lineup for season three of competition “The Traitors.” Among the 21 contestants are Tom Sandoval (“Vanderpump Rules”), Chrishell Stauss (“Selling Sunset”), Dolores Catania (“The Real Housewives of New Jersey”), and Jeremy Collins (“Survivor”).

TECH

The Super Bowl was just part of Temu’s aggressive ad spend game plan this year. The Chinese e-commerce company spent over $386 million to advertise with digital, print, and TV outlets from January through April 2024, according to MediaRadar, a 127% increase from the same period last year. Digital advertising accounted for over $358 million, or 93% of spend, which was up 143% YoY from the $148 million spent during the first four months of 2023.

IAB Tech Lab announced the release of the final Data Deletion Request Framework, which establishes a standardized mechanism for transmitting data deletion request signals throughout the digital advertising ecosystem. It provides provisions for validating request origins, ensuring requester authenticity, confirming receipt, and employing cryptographic signatures for authentication. “The industry has long struggled with the need for a standardized solution to manage data deletion requests,” said Jared Moscow, Director of Product, Privacy & Addressability, IAB Tech Lab. “Acting as the industry’s first signal for upholding consumer data subject rights, the Framework equips industry players with the technical tools necessary for efficiently managing data deletion requests.”

Yahoo Advertising is combining CTV and linear viewing data with its Yahoo Unified TV Audience product, which employs Inscape automatic content recognition data from smart TVs and pay TV set-top boxes. The viewer information is bolstered by the Yahoo demand-side platform user panel of 205 million logged-in users in the US and Yahoo ConnectID, the company’s post-cookie identity platform. “As the landscape of TV viewership data becomes increasingly fragmented and complex, advertisers face the challenge of adequately targeting and measuring their audiences across TV platforms and channels,” said Yahoo CRO Elizabeth Herbst-Brady. “Unified TV Audiences solves for this by blending CTV and linear data so advertisers have a holistic view of the TV ecosystem, enabling them to more accurately reach their intended audiences while optimizing strategies, targeting and performance.” Launch partner eBay saw a 52% increase in campaign reach across devices that also resulted in their CTV campaigns outperforming benchmarks, in terms of attention metrics, by 7%.

Charter Communications announced a commitment of $1 million to Spectrum Digital Education in 2024, bringing its total investment in the initiative to $10 million since 2017. Spectrum Digital Education awards grants to nonprofit organizations that work to expand access to connectivity tools, education and resources in the communities that Spectrum serves.

RETAIL MEDIA

CoolerX, the technology company powering in-store retail media and merchandising, announced the expansion of its contextual targeting capabilities with the addition of 12,000 new micro-audience segments. This rollout offers brands access to AI-enhanced in-store audience insights and targeting capabilities to dynamically and contextually engage consumers as they’re breaking out their wallets.

STREAMING

Some good news for Jennifer Lopez. The multi-hyphenate recently canceled her concert tour and her marriage is the subject of tabloid headlines, but her new Netflix film, “Atlas,” is a massive hit, notching close to 60 million global views, and topping the film chart for the second week in a row. It’s Lopez’s fourth number one streaming movie in the past two years, after Netflix’s “The Mother,” Prime Video’s “This Is Me Now: A Love Story” and “Shotgun Wedding.”

Zone·tv announced that its free streaming service zone·ify will now include content from Cineverse. The partnership includes the rights to dozens of on-demand movies and eight of FAST channels, with more to come in the next few months.

SPORTS UPDATE

Diamond Sports Group has reached an agreement in principle on a new naming-rights sponsor for its 18 regional sports networks. As the expiration of the company’s legacy deal with Bally’s looms, Bloomberg reports that FanDuel will replace Bally’s.

Labatt Breweries of Canada and the National Hockey League announced a multiyear Canadian partnership, which includes Budweiser becoming an Official Beer of the NHL in Canada.

COMING UP

Nat Geo documentary “Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story premieres tomorrow, June 7 on YouTube. The film follows the story of a wild otter who washes up on a jetty in the remote Scottish islands of Shetland, and finds a new family.
