Ad spend in January 2024 rose 4.3% versus the year-ago period, according to SMI’s Guideline’s US Ad Market Tracker. Smaller ad categories led the charge, rising 5.3% over January 2023, while aggregate gain for the top 10 ad categories was 3.7%.

As communications companies struggle to hold on to broadband and cable subscribers, Charter Communications is considering buying cable rival Altice USA, reports Bloomberg. Altice has not been approached about a deal, according to CNBC.

Great American Family is launching movie franchise Great American Mysteries, starting with “The Ainsley McGregor Mysteries: A Case for the Winemaker,” starring Candace Cameron Bure and Aaron Ashmore (“Ginny % Georgia”). “Our cozy mysteries are crafted in the heritage of the classic storytelling that has evolved since Agatha Christie coined the term in the 1930s and set the stage for one of the most popular genres of entertainment,” said GAC CEO Bill Abbott, who rebranded Hallmark Movie Channel to Hallmark Movies & Mysteries back in 2014.

Paramount+ has greenlit original UK drama “Curfew” (w/t) from Vertigo Films (“Monsters”) in association with Evolutionary Films (“I Am Vengeance: Retaliation”). The six-part crime thriller is set in a society where all men are bound by a strict curfew from 7p to 7a, with their movements tracked by an ankle tag 24 hours a day.

A college-set ensemble series created by and starring Benito Skinner has been ordered by Prime Video. “Overcompensating” focuses on a closeted former football player and a high school outsider determined to fit in. Skinner executive produces along with Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, and Ali Goodwin, who executive produces for Strong Baby. A24 and Amazon MGM Studios are producing.

Eugene Levy (“Schitt’s Creek”) has joined the season four cast of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” in a recurring role. He joins new recurring cast members Molly Shannon and Eva Longoria, as well as returning standout Meryl Streep.

Jesse Williams (“Grey’s Anatomy”) will star in and produce Prime Video action drama “Costiera,” set on the Amalfi Coast. The English-language series is being co-produced by Amazon Studios and Luca Bernabei for Fremantle-owned Luxe Vide (“Medici”).

Universal Music Group Nashville announced Sing Me Back Home Productions, a new production arm of the Nashville-based entertainment company focused on projects for film and TV.

CBS has renewed soap opera “The Young and the Restless” for four more years, through the 2027-28 season. The series has been daytime’s number one drama for 36 years.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Docuseries “A Brief History of the Future” premieres Wednesday, April 3 at 9p on PBS. The six-parter looks at the future and how we can reimagine it.

Season four of Paramount+’s “The Challenge: All-Stars” kicks off Wednesday, April 10. The reality competition premieres with back-to-back episodes.

COMING UP

NBC will celebrate the 10th anniversary of “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” with a two-hour special on May 14 at 9p. “From ‘Saturday Night Live’ to ‘Late Night’ to ‘The Tonight Show,’ Jimmy Fallon stands as one of the greatest performers across NBC’s rich history,” said Mark Lazarus, Chairman, NBCUniversal Media Group. “Over the past 10 years, Jimmy has broadened ‘The Tonight Show’ with his signature brand of humor and continues to deliver laughs to millions of people night after night.”

FOX News Channel’s Sean Hannity will present an interview with former President Donald Trump on Thursday, February 29 during “Hannity” at 9p.

Kelsea Ballerini will return as solo host of the 2024 CMT Music Awards and perform on the fan-voted award show, airing Sunday, April 7 on CBS.

STREAMING

Subscriber churn for premium streaming subscriptions rose 0.8 percentage points, to an average 5.5% year-over-year, in 2023, according to Antenna. Netflix’s churn rate of 2% was the lowest, while Starz and Apple TV+ – 11% and 10% – were the highest. Overall, premium streaming subscriptions slowed to a growth rate of 10.1%, with total subscriptions of 242.9 million at year’s end.

Subscribers of Netflix’s basic tier who are on Apple’s iTunes billing plan are being told they will have to find another way to pay Netflix. Affected customers will have to either deal with a higher monthly price, or a lower price with ads.

Mansa, showcasing the best global Black culture, has launched on Amazon Freevee. “Reign by Mansa” is a live TV channel offering a curated selection of films, documentaries, and television series.

RETAIL MEDIA

BlueZoo announced it has delivered its impressions measurement software for worldwide deployment of BrightSign’s new Series-5 digital media players. The incorporation of BlueZoo technology in software form enables BrightSign to offer in-store digital signage that includes measurement of audience reach, dwell time, flow, and related analytics in real time without the need to purchase, install and maintain multiple hardware sensors throughout each location as part of retailers’ in-store Retail Media Networks. “The precision with which the BlueZoo solution measures audiences of digital signage throughout Retail Media Networks brings new levels of accuracy and transparency to pricing in-store advertising,” said Claude Sabourin, director of Business Development at SCHOT, a value-added distributor of both BrightSign and BlueZoo solutions in South-East Asia.

TECH

Streaming technology company Brightcove is entering into a strategic partnership with Google Ad Manager to enhance its Ad Monetization service. The collaboration supports Brightcove customers that leverage Google Ad Manager’s digital advertising sales platform for their digital ad operations. “Forging this partnership with Google Ad Manager allows Brightcove to increase support and service options to ultimately help customers monetize their video content and drive more revenue from their sites and apps,” said Brightcove CEO Marc DeBevoise.

DOOH video network Captivate announced the return of its Women in Business content series this March in celebration of Women’s History Month, International Women’s Day and Equal Pay Day. Additionally, Captivate Office Pulse, the company’s research division, released the results of a workplace study that found 40% of women say they are “never” struck by self-doubt, a higher proportion than men. When asked if they felt their success was deserved, 46% of women said that not only did they earn their spot, they’re aspiring to even higher echelons. Other insights from the Captivate Office Pulse study include:
– 66% of female professionals considered themselves to be risk-takers at work.
– Early-career women were more than twice as likely to have a clear career plan than those in the workforce for 8-14 years.
– 91% of professional women said they used unwarranted apologies like “sorry” at least some of the time in oral communication.

Sony is laying off 8% of its PlayStation workforce, or about 900 employees, in a restructuring aimed at streamlining the business. While acknowledging “challenging times,” in an email to employees, Jim Ryan, President and CEO of Sony Entertainment Interactive, said the restructuring “is not indicative of a lack of strength of our company, our brand, or our industry. Our goal is to remain agile and adaptable and to continue to focus on delivering the best gaming experiences possible now and in the future.”

Madhive has launched a local CTV marketplace for political advertising, aimed at helping buyers combat fragmentation, streamline activation and navigate inventory scarcity for the 2024 election season. Fox Television Stations will be first-to-market as one of the pioneer clients leveraging Madhive’s political offering. “Our ability to target every congressional district in the country using the combination of FLX’s scale and Madhive’s award-winning technology provides an excellent opportunity for campaigns of all sizes to target potential voters,” said Michael Page, SVP of Digital Sales for FOX Television Stations.

SPORTS UPDATE

Wrexham fans in the US will be able to watch the Red Dragons on broadcast television for the first time on “Wrexham Wreplays.” The game blocks kick off Wednesday, March 6 at 12p on the Maximum Effort Channel, and will air every Wednesday from 12p-6p. The football club garnered fame after being featured in FX docuseries, “Welcome to Wrexham.”

Golf star Michelle Wie West, the youngest woman ever to compete on the PGA Tour, will be the subject of “Dream Big: The Michelle Wie Story,” a documentary from NBC Sports, the USGA and Campfire Studios. The film will debut in May 2024 on NBC ahead of this year’s US Women’s Open Presented by Ally.

HBO sports documentary “The Lioneart,” directed and produced by filmmaker Laura Brownson (“The Rachel Divide”), debuts Tuesday, March 12 at 9p on HBO. The film looks at the life of Indianapolis 500 champ Dan Wheldon, who died in a horrific crash in 2011.

Fifth season has secured international sales for the two-part thriller “Murder is Easy,” a new adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic novel produced by Mammoth Screen. Deals secured include Movistar Plus+ (Spain), Network4 (Hungary), CANAL+ Polska S.A. (Poland), TV2 (Denmark), TV2 (Norway), CANAL+ (France), Kanal 2 (Estonia), RUV (Iceland), TV4 (Sweden), Pickbox (Central and Eastern Europe) and MTV (Finland), BBC Studios Australia and New Zealand, CJ ENM (South Korea) and NHK Enterprises for Mystery Channel (Japan).

Keshet Broadcasting has ordered a second season of Israel’s drama, “A Body That Works” (Goof Shlishi) from Kuma Studios for Keshet 12.

ITV Studios will distribute the UK boy band show “Made in Korea” (w/t) to the global market. Currently in production, the BBC show follows a fledgling British boy band as it departs for Korea to attend the ultimate K-Pop boot camp.

UK-based distributor DCD Rights has pre-sold the fourth season of murder mystery drama “My Life Is Murder,” starring Lucy Lawless (“Xena: Warrior Princes”) to YLE Finland, TV2 Denmark, Quebecor Content Canada, Yes-DBS Israel, ProFour Media Distribution for Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia, and NBCUniversal International Networks & Direct-To-Consumer for Universal TV in Africa, 13ÈME RUE in France and CALLE 13 Spain.

Paramount+ in Canada and inkcanada announced the return of #inkdrinks Toronto, in-person professional networking events designed to break the common barriers to industry-access for Canadian screenwriters. “Avatar: The Last Airbender” was number one on Netflix’s weekly English-language TV chart its opening weekend, with 21.2 million views, and reached the top ten in 92 countries.

February marked FOX News Channel’s 37th month atop primetime and 36 months in total day viewership, scoring its highest-rated month since October 2023. FNC closed out February with 96 of the top 100 cable news telecasts for the month. Over at Fox Business Network, the net’s business day programming drew 207,000 viewers and 198,000 market hour viewers for the month.
