Yesterday at 8pm EST, Amazon Prime subscribers gained access to the season 2 premiere of Transparent. News of the sneak preview emerged about eight hours ahead of time, via a tweet from show-creator Jill Soloway. The full season debuts December 11 in the U.S., Germany, Austria, and the U.K.
 
Jukin Media is doing what it does best: Licensing viral videos. The company is partnering with Sky Q, the upcoming entertainment service from the British broadcaster Sky. Jukin’s main brands – FailArmy, People Are Awesome, The Pet Collective, and JukinVideo – will all provide content to Sky Q for an early 2016 launch

Goodbye ugly, hello gorgeous. Amazon Prime in the U.K. has ordered The Collection, a new fashion drama from former Ugly Betty showrunner Oliver Goldstick. The series, about a post-World War II Paris fashion house, begins production in January.

CONTENT PROGRAMMING

 
Seems like Facebook does everything these days. Next up: Documentary.  As part of the new #TreatmentForAll global AIDS awareness campaign helmed by digital influencers, UN Assistant Secretary-General Ray Chambers has debuted a new short documentary, the first doc ever to make its debut on Facebook. (Find it here.) The film features TV host Ricki Lake, as well as digital influencers such as Wesley Stromberg and Megan Nicole.

 

Chinese SVOD service iQiyi has launched its newest series, and the Western Hemisphere is in on the act. All episodes of The Substitute, a 20-episode spy thriller, are now available to iQiyi subscribers; people using the ad-supported version of iQiyi have access to one episode per day, Monday through Friday, for the next four weeks. The series was produced by Palette Pictures, which is jointly based in the U.S. and China. The show’s other Western talent includes Pakistani-American writer and consulting producer Kamran Pasha, as well as Canadian cinematographer Brenton Spencer.
 
It’s safe to say The X Files was pure fiction, right? Well, not exactly. The Real, Vice’s original digital series detailing the true stories behind famous films and TV shows, made its season two premiere yesterday.  In the opener, Casey Feldman (now the show’s host) traveled to Roswell, New Mexico, accompanied by a paranormal investigator who’s been heavily compared to Dana Scully, Gillian Anderson’s character from The X Files. Past episodes of The Real have centered on TV shows including True Blood, Weeds, and Eastbound & Down.

 

RESEARCH

2015 was a billion-dollar year for virtual and augmented reality investments – and a lot of that was driven by one company. A new report from tech advisory firm Digi-Capital found that, of the more than one billion dollars in capital poured into VR and AR over the last year, Magic Leap’s $542 million funding round in Q4 2014 accounted for over half of it. (The augmented reality company’s mammoth funding round was led by Google.) The report found that VR and AR investment in general have grown in each of the last two quarters, with Q3 2015 investments reaching over $150 million.

Chromecast
reigned supreme in Q3. According to the market research firm Strategic Analytics, Google’s streaming device accounted for 35% of streamers sold worldwide in the third quarter of 2015. Apple TV placed second with 20%, followed by Amazon Fire TV with 16% and Roku with 16%. As Variety notes, it’s impossible to say whether Chromecast’s dominance will continue: Apple is marketing its next-gen Apple TV more aggressively than previous iterations. And Amazon’s decision to block online sales of Chromecast and Apple TV may factor into things as well. Bottom line: The holiday season is up for grabs.

This week saw two streaming series top the TVI rankings. “It’s abnormal to see streaming programs surfacing higher than notable cable/broadcast shows,” says Meghan Hakim, Client Strategist at ListenFirst Media. “However, the drivers for these two shows appear to be due to the fact that they’re new/upcoming. For these two specifically, we’re seeing a high volume of organic interest coming through Wikipedia page views, where it’s not atypical to see higher volumes for new programs as fans are in the discovery phase for the shows.This week alone, the Jessica Jones program Wikipedia page has been viewed nearly 600K times, and The Man in the High Castle page received 350K views (compared to 179K for The Walking Dead and 97K for Game of Thrones), likely driven by the high volume of press around the upcoming premieres.”

Digital media company and multi-channel network Fullscreen has a new COO. The job falls to Andy Forssell, who served as Hulu’s SVP of Content and Distribution for about five years. He also served as Hulu’s acting CEO for most of 2013.
