LaLiga is cashing in, locking in a new eight-year TV deal with Televisa – valued at $70 million per year according to multiple reports – that doubled the money the Spanish soccer league makes from its media rights in Mexico and Central America. The deal, brokered by LaLiga North America, continues to expand the league’s global presence, which includes a recent $1.4 billion deal with ESPN for U.S. broadcasting rights.
PROGRAMMING
On the viewership front, ESPN’s NBA viewership is up double-digits so far this season, according to Nielsen. Through 12 games, the NBA on ESPN is averaging 1,439,000 viewers, up 20% over the 2020-21 regular season average of 1,197,000 viewers. Meanwhile, ESPN is also seeing double-digit audience increases for NBA Countdown as well as its new daily studio show, NBA Today. NBA Countdown has averaged 536,000 viewers for its first six shows, up 34% from the 2020-21 regular season average, while the 11 NBA Today shows that have aired on ESPN have averaged 297,000 viewers, up 29% over the same timeslot during the 2020-21 regular season.
Around the dial, NBC Sports landed year-over-year viewership increases for both the Cup and Xfinity Series for NASCAR in addition to claiming the company’s most-streamed seasons for both series on record. NBC Sports’ 2021 NASCAR Cup Series viewership across NBC and NBCSN produced a Total Audience Delivery of 2.562 million viewers, according to Nielsen and digital data from Adobe Analytics, capped by Kyle Larson’s first-career championship last Sunday, which produced a TAD of 3.274 million viewers, up 6% from last season’s championship race on NBC. Overall, more than half (11 of 20) of the race windows saw year-over-year viewership gains vs. 2020, including six consecutive races from Michigan (Aug. 22) to Las Vegas (Sept. 26). NBC Sports also saw viewership gains for its coverage of the 2021 Xfinity Series, producing a TAD of 982,000 viewers to rank as its most-watched Xfinity Series season since 2018, up 6% vs. 2020 (924,000).
The NHL is reportedly discussing two new All-Star Game skills competition events that will be held outdoors on the Las Vegas Strip, according to ESPN. The report states that league executives were in Las Vegas this week to present the plan to city officials, local police and at least one hotel, The Bellagio. The 2022 NHL All-Star Skills Competition is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 4 (ESPN) and the All-Star Game is set for Saturday, Feb. 5 (ABC), at T-Mobile Arena.
ESPN has reached a multi-year contract extension with award-winning ESPN senior writer and SEC Network and ESPN Radio co-host Ryan McGee. McGee will continue his role with ESPN.com and as the co-host of SEC Network and ESPN Radio’s hit show, Marty & McGee Presented by Old Trapper.
ESPN also announced a multi-year extension with Senior MLB Insider Jeff Passan. The journalist will continue to serve as a lead reporter and commentator for ESPN’s multiplatform Major League Baseball coverage. “There’s no better place to cover the incredible breadth of stories the sports world has to offer than ESPN, and I’m giddy to know I’ll be here for several years to come,” said Passan. “Our baseball team is filled with bright and talented reporters, analysts, editors and producers, and it’s our goal on a daily basis to make the readers and viewers of ESPN think, learn and emerge more informed.”
