OpenAI’s transcription tool Whisper is prone to inventing chunks of text, according to an Associated Press report. Researchers told the AP that Whisper “hallucinations” can include racial commentary, violent rhetoric and imagined medical treatments. A machine learning engineer reported discovering hallucinations in about half of the over 100 hours of Whisper transcriptions he analyzed, while another developer said he found hallucinations in nearly every one of the 26,000 transcripts he created with Whisper. In response, OpenAI said it appreciated the researchers’ findings, incorporates feedback in model updates.

The NCTA, the industry group representing cable and media companies and internet providers, along with the IAB and the Electronic Security Association, are suing to block the FTC’s “click to cancel” rule, which makes it easier to cancel subscriptions and memberships. In a complaint filed in the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals, the groups allege the new rule could cover as many as 1 billion paid subscriptions in the United States and is “arbitrary, capricious, and an abuse of discretion.” The rule, passed on October 16, says it must be “at least as easy” to cancel services as it is to sign up.
Responding in a blog post to a lawsuit alleging it had illegally copied publishers’ copyrighted works, AI startup Perplexity said the lawsuit “reflects an adversarial posture between media and tech that is — while depressingly familiar — fundamentally shortsighted, unnecessary and self-defeating.” The complaint from News Corp.-owned Dow Jones & Co. and the New York Post alleges a letter had been sent to Perplexity in July, putting it on notice of the legal issues raised by Perplexity’s unauthorized use of copyrighted works and offering to discuss a potential licensing deal, but “Perplexity did not bother to respond.” No so, countered Perplexity: “They reached out; we responded the very same day; instead of continuing the dialogue, they filed this lawsuit.”

Healthcare company Haleon partnered with CreativeX for an AI-powered tool aimed at improving inclusivity and representation across its digital advertising content. Called the Health Inclusivity Screener, Haleon claims it is the only data driven tool of its kind to analyze digital advertising content for both readability and inclusivity metrics. Haleon said it has successfully piloted the tool in nine markets – Australia, Colombia, Egypt, Malaysia, Saudia Arabia, South Africa, Sweden, UAE and UK3 – and intends to extend the tool to other markets and global brands over time

In the 2024 election cycle through the end of August, advertisers who spent at least $5,000 on Google and Meta bought $619 million in political ads, with at least $248 million focused on the presidential race, according to a new report from the Wesleyan Media Project, the Brennan Center and OpenSecrets. Additional findings include:
· Of spenders on Meta and Google known to advertise in support of a party, spending in favor of Democrats was more than three times the amount of spending for Republicans. (Some Republican-aligned spending may have migrated to other platforms not included in this analysis, in part due to lack of public data.)
· Among presidential candidates, $182 million was spent for Kamala Harris and $45 million for Donald Trump.
· Almost half the total, $281 million, came from spenders that may hide some or all of their donors. |

Despite its ban on political ads, TikTok approved ads that contained election disinformation submitted by watchdog group Global Witness. While the nonprofit found that social media companies have in general improved their content moderation systems since its investigation two years ago, TikTok approved four of eight ads submitted that contained election falsehoods. Global Witness pulled them before they were posted. “Four ads were incorrectly approved during the first stage of moderation, but did not run on our platform,” said a TikTok spokesperson. “We do not allow political advertising and will continue to enforce this policy on an ongoing basis.”
Google sent an email to its advertising partners announcing that it will block election ads across all of its platforms after the polls close on November 5. The practice was first implemented during the 2020 election to prevent misinformation about voting and election outcomes. Google Ads, DV360, YouTube and Google’s Ad Exchange and Shopping ads will be included in the pause.

Greater transparency into methods and modeling corrections are needed to protect against age-based bias in active meter audience measurement panels versus passive meter panels. That’s according to “Understanding the Issue of Age-Based Bias in Active Audience Measurement Panels,” a study from CIMM and TVision. Panelists participating in the simulation were provided with a tablet and instructed to actively report viewing, while their viewing was also being passively monitored. The simulation identified a range of potential errors that could emerge in active panels, including:
· When the television was on during the study, the simulation found that passive and active metering approaches agreed on viewer counts only around 56% of the time.
· Up to 44% of TV on-time in the simulation was over- or under-reported by viewers.
· 18–34-year-old viewers were as much as 7X more likely to under-report viewing than over-report when measured through an active meter panel.
· Viewer fatigue was seen over time on active panels. Error rates were much higher for older demographics, though over and under reporting by the group generally offset each other.
“The study helps to illustrate some of the issues that can arise, as vendors look to correct for non-compliance,” said Jon Watts, Managing Director, CIMM. “The impact and effectiveness of these corrections over time may be difficult to determine, unless some kind of secondary measurement check is introduced on an ongoing basis to determine whether the corrections made are accurate.”
