Fuse has its sights set on culturally diverse influencers with a September 30 relaunch. On the way: a new logo and programming that’s “edgy and relevant.” That includes the made-over net’s first original series, Transcendent, a docu-series about trans women performers at a cabaret, bowing Wednesday, September 30 at 11:30p; Fluffy Breaks Even, an unscripted series that’s part of a multi-year partnership with comedian Gabriel Iglesias launching Thursday, October 1 at 10p, and Revealed, featuring interviews and behind-the-scenes footage of artists including Ed Sheeran and Jason Derulo, bowing Saturday October 24 at 7p. “In order to reach the multicultural, Millennial audience of trendsetters and influencers that we are calling ‘New Young Americans,’ we need to deliver programming that is diverse, sexy, honest and edgy,” said Fuse Media president Bill Hillary.

IN THE NEWS

Norman Lear, at TCA to talk about his upcoming profile on PBS’s American Masters, due in fall 2016, also updated reporters on the status of a Latino reboot of comedy One Day at a Time. “Not in Spanish, but English. That could happen,” said Lear, adding that unlike the 1975-1984 original, focused on a single mother and two daughters, he’d like to have a mother, son and daughter. “In a couple weeks I’ll let you know if it’s happening,” promised the 93-year-old TV legend.

In a bid to build buzz, the entire third and final season of StarzDa Vinci’s Demons and new limited series Flesh and Bone (“the underbelly of a ballet company”) will be released simultaneously on Starz Play and Starz On Demand on their linear premiere dates, Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, November 8, respectively. “Both series are engaging and well-suited for a binge-viewing experiment,” said David Baldwin, EVP of program planning.

Nat Geo is reaching for the stars, teaming once again with Imagine Entertainment, as well as RadicalMedia, for global event series Red Planet. Set in 2032 and the present day, the scripted/unscripted hybrid will tell the story of the quest to colonize Mars. "This series is truly emblematic of the scale and scope and creative ambition that we are envisioning in our programming going forward,” said Courtney Monroe, Nat Geo Channels CEO. Brian Grazer and Ron Howard exec produce. Nat Geo announced science anthology series Breakthrough, from Grazer and Howard, back in April.

Joining Jon Stewart for his last week as host of Comedy Central’s Daily Show will be Amy Schumer, Denis Leary and Louis C.K. Finale airs Thursday, August 6.

In news that will likely not please The Bachelor host Chris Harrison, Lifetime dating show satire UnReal isn’t just getting a second season, “We have talked a lot about a Faith spin-off,” co-creator and exec producer Marti Noxon revealed at a Paley Center event. As for Harrison calling UnReal “really terrible” in a recent interview, “I was thrilled,” said Noxon. “Any press is good press.”

To avoid NFL pre-emptions on October, the CW has moved up the season two premiere of Jane the Virgin and series launch of comedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend to Monday, October 12. The second episodes of the shows will face off against football in some markets the following week.

Where does Relativity’s bankruptcy leave its TV productions? Still in place, according to the production house’s chief exec, Ryan Kavanaugh. “We will continue to move forward with a robust production slate of scripted and non-scripted shows during the reorganization process,” said Kavanaugh on the company’s website. “Limitless, which is based on the Relativity movie starring Bradley Cooper, is slated to debut on CBS’ primetime lineup this fall. And we continue to leverage our MTV ratings hit Catfish by developing a number of international versions of the show, as well as a planned sequel called Truce, which is currently in production.” Relativity has over 29 series in production, and is still pitching shows to networks.

Similarities between Walter Blunt, focus of Starz comedy Blunt Talk and played by Patrick Stewart, and anchorman Howard “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going take this anymore!” Beal from 1976 film Network, are not coincidental. “I rewatched Network and thought, ‘I want more Howard Beal,’” said exec producer Seth MacFarlane at TCA last week. “I saw this as a continuation  if Network had continued, let’s find out if Howard Beal continued his broadcast.” Blunt Talk premieres Sunday, August 22 at 9p.

Norman Lear is talking about plans for a One Day at a Time reboot. What other Lear show should be revived? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

AMC martial arts drama Into the Badlands premieres Sunday, November 15 at 10p, a plum slot after The Walking Dead. The series “is an exciting moment for us in that martial arts is not only a new genre for an AMC series, but also one that has been largely absent from television for 15 years," said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming for AMC and SundanceTV, at TCA last week. The series premiere will coincide with movie event AMC FightFest, a two-week martial arts movie marathon running Monday, November 2 through Friday, November 13 weeknights at 8p.

Season two of Cooking’s Taco Trip launches Tuesday, August 25 at 10p. First stop: the Mile High taco scene in Denver.

AMC’s not the only one heading west with heavy-hitters: Billy the Kid: The New Evidence premieres Sunday, October 18 at 9p on Nat Geo. The net partnered with Kevin Costner (Wyatt Earp) and Leftfield Pictures for the two-hour special, tracing the origins of a newly-discovered tintype containing what appears to be an image of the fugitive. PBS’s American-made drama Mercy Street has a premiere date: Sunday, January 17 at 10p, after Downton Abbey. Six-parter is set in a Civil War hospital. PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger said she was “cautiously optimistic” about the possibility of more made-in-the-USA dramas.

While the cast of Netflix’s Full House sequel, Fuller House, is having “the time of our lives” taping the revival, according to Candace Cameron Bure, Lifetime is readying for original movie The Unauthorized Full House Story, premiering Saturday, August 22 at 8p. To ensure fans get their fill of Full, the net is airing Peacock Productions-produced one-hour doc Beyond the Headlines: Full House at 10p.

The PBS Arts Fall Festival starts with a bang on Friday, October 9 with Unity – The Latin Tribute to Michael Jackson. Sheila E hosts, and Latin artists perform 16 Jackson hits with an assist from a 37-piece orchestra. Fear the Walking Dead landed a 15-episode season two order from AMC ahead of the series premiere on Sunday, August 23 at 9p. A special episode of Talking Dead follows the season one finale Sunday, October 4 at 10p.

The PBS premiere date for the sixth and final season of Downton Abbey will be Sunday, January 3, it was announced at TCA – and to mark the occasion, the period drama will have a float in New Year’s Day’s Tournament of Roses parade. The entry “will have lots of flowers on it and it will be a Downton Abbey theme,” said PBS chief Paula Kerger. “And no, I won’t be on it.”

CASTING

Jordana Brewster (Dallas) and Charlie Barnett (Chicago Fire) are onboard for season two of ABC midseason anthology crime series Secrets & Lies. They join fellow newcomers Michael Ealy and Terry O’Quinn.

Ian McShane (Deadwood) returns to HBO for a key role in season six of Game of Thrones, launching in spring 2016.
