IN THE NEWS

Seven AMC Networks series are making the leap to WBD’s Max in a “programming pop-up.” “AMC+ Picks on Max” starts September 1, offering Max subscribers seasons of “Fear the Walking Dead,” “Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire,” “Dark Winds,” “Gangs of London,” “Ride with Norman Reedus,” “A Discovery of Witches” and “Killing Eve” for 60 days. “AMC Networks makes great shows, and our goal is to bring these shows to as many people as possible, in ways that best serve viewers,” explained Dan McDermott, President of Entertainment and AMC Studios for AMC Networks, of the unusual move. “This promotional arrangement with Warner Bros. Discovery is a terrific opportunity to serve up some of our most popular and critically acclaimed programming to millions of Max subscribers in the US for two full months.”

Viewers are spending more than 10 minutes on average trying to find something to watch – and not always succeeding, according to Nielsen’s 2023 State of Play report. In fact, 20% of viewers searching were so frustrated they decided to do something other than watch TV. “As individual FAST services increase their channels – many of which include several hundred – success will hinge on their ability to quickly connect viewers with content they’re looking for,” noted the report. “That point, which is critical across all streaming services, becomes even more critical when you consider that many channels and programs are not exclusive to individual services.”

Recent political activity has caused a spike in national TV political advertising, which jumped to $3.7 million over the last seven weeks, according to estimates from EDO Ad EnGage. On August 23, the day of the GOP debate, media buying from super PACs rose to 50 million impressions, up from 3.1 million on July 2.

Following accusations of malfeasance and a hostile membership environment, the Hollywood Critics Association is rebranding as the Hollywood Creative Alliance. The H.C.A. will include critics, entertainment journalists, content creators, industry influencers, and creatives as part of its overall membership. We Live Entertainment’s Scott Menzel will remain as CEO/President. “Over the past several years, the industry has been faced with a series of ongoing challenges that have and will continue to change the industry as we know it,” said Menzel. “As a younger organization, a decision was made to re-establish and expand the H.C.A. to better reflect its membership and vision for the future.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Roku has renewed “NFL Draft: The Pick is In” for a second season. The docuseries premiered August 25 and was The Roku Channel’s top original documentary premiere.

The subject of mental health challenges faced by athletes is tackled in “Behind the Racquet,” a docuseries in development from Venus Williams and Wondermind. Rex Miller (“Citizen Ashe”) will direct. “By exploring and sharing how athletes cope with their mental health and other off-court challenges, we’re able to address and normalize the many different layers of how mental health contributes to player performance and beyond,” said Williams.

BIG TV Q&A

In the rapidly changing media world, to succeed, companies can’t just keep pace – the need to look ahead. That’s the theme of the Cynopsis Big TV Conference, less than one month away. Drew Corry, MAGNA’s SVP, Group Director, Strategic Investment and Media Research, will be on hand to offer the kind of insights and fresh thinking that can help executives overcome challenges and find new opportunities in today’s ecosystem. Here’s a preview.

What do you consider the biggest threat to the media ecosystem right now?
Legacy thinking and an inability to change quickly. Audiences and consumers shift areas of focus at radical speeds. Combining that with the exponential impact of technology has created a media environment changes on a minute-by-minute basis. This requires clients and agencies to be dynamic and fluid at all moments during the consumer journey. Disruptive technology like AI creates threats and opportunities on a daily basis. Lastly, identifying large cultural moments and scaled audiences having a common experience seems harder to come by versus 15 or 20 years ago. Those are some of the moments that marketers covet.

What is the most important change you think companies need to make to keep pace with consumer behavior?
Given the myriad of communication platforms and touchpoints advertiser have with consumers, having a clear position as brand and voice is critical. Brands need to be able to be authentic when trying to communicate their messages on all platforms, from TikTok, to Snap, to Reddit, to Netflix to Amazon, to NBCU.

You’re speaking on a Big TV panel about Gen Z. What is one lesson you expect the audience to take away from the panel?
While technology has created the opportunity for Gen Zers to have unique individual experiences with their media, it remains important for brands to create and be a part of cultural moments that bond people of different backgrounds around centralized and common experiences.

Tablo will add live free streaming channels into its live TV guide, with a new app available on Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Android TV/Google TV, and iOS mobile platforms as well as most smart TVs and mobile devices. Apple TV, Samsung, and Vizio are expected to be added later this year. “Consumers struggling with inflation are looking for more affordable ways to enjoy live sports, local news and must-watch TV events,” said Grant Hall, CEO of Nuvyyo. “With a live TV guide that spans the best in live broadcast TV and free live streaming content, one-touch series recording as well as customized content recommendations, Tablo has evolved beyond a way to enhance your antenna TV experience to an affordable portal to free TV without a subscription.”

· Digital marketers, who in partnership with social marketers, can better understand creation and ROI analysis of campaigns

STREAMING

Viewer attention to CTV ads has fallen, according to TVision report, “The State of CTV Advertising,” dipping from 31.2% in 2H22 to 29.6% 1H23. Presence-in-room, which measures if someone is in the room with the opportunity to pay attention to the ad, also fell in the same time period for CTV, possibly because CTV apps give viewers a counter indicating how long an ad will run. While time spent viewing Netflix fell slightly in the first half of 2023, Netflix household reach increased 3 percent to 62.9%, the top spot for Household Reach. YouTube also increased its Household Reach for the first half of the year, and Peacock, Paramount+ and Tubi experienced growth, according to the report.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Yahoo Sports is bolstering its football content ahead of the NFL and NCAA football seasons. Jason Fitz (“Fitz & Harry”) joins Yahoo Sports as a multi-platform host for its NFL, Fantasy Football and college football coverage; former NFL coach Nate Tice will analyze league trends and prospects for the NFL Draft; Sal Vetri, founder of Vetri Media, will contribute to Yahoo Sports Fantasy coverage; and Ross Dellenger, who joined Yahoo Sports in July 2023, is senior college football reporter.

On-air personality and producer David Jacoby has joined “The Carton Show” as co-host. Jacoby will appear opposite Craig Carton weekdays at 7a on FS1.
