Conan O’Brien, TBS and others associated with Conan were slapped with a lawsuit alleging the comedian violated copyright law by lifting four jokes posted on a personal blog and Twitter. The complaint was filed on July 22 in California federal court. “We at Conaco firmly believe there is no merit to this lawsuit,” said the production company behind the late nighter.
Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger has acknowledged that ESPN will eventually go a la carte as pay-TV’s bundling infrastructure gives way. However, he noted that move is more than five years away. “If we end up seeing more erosion in the so-called multichannel bundle, quality will win out," Iger told CNBC‘s Squawk Box. “While the business model may face challenges over the next few years, long term for ESPN … they’ll be fine.” The national sports network has lost 7.2 percent of its pay-TV base since 2011, while costs for its programming are rising faster than anywhere in the pay-TV ecosystem.
Ashley Gorman and Patricia Childress have joined the staff of lifestyle show FABLife as director and senior supervising producer, respectively. Premiering in national syndication on Monday, September 14, the daily talker features Tyra Banks leading a panel of lifestyle experts that includes Chrissy Teigen, Joe Zee, Lauren Makk and Leah Ashley.
Fausto Malave has been named WSCV Telemundo 51 co-anchor of the 5:30p, 6p and 11p weekly newscasts. Malave joined Telemundo 51 as a reporter in 2006 and became co-anchor of the station’s weekend newscasts three years ago.

TV Land closed a deal for a pilot script with Melissa McCarthy and her actor/director husband Ben Falcone serving as exec producers through their production company, On The Day. The single-camera comedy, tentatively titled Friends with Melissa, is written, executive produced and inspired by the real lives of Hugh Davidson, Larry Dorf and Rachel Ramras, who watched as their friends from The Groundlings went on to star in blockbuster comedies and win Oscars, while they toiled away writing for children’s television. McCarthy is set to appear in the pilot.
The cast of The Waltons reunites on Hallmark Channel‘s Home and Family on Monday, August 3 at 10a. Among the highlights: Richard Thomas (John Boy) cooks a pie with host Cristina Ferrare, Judy Norton (Mary Ellen) sings a song in tribute to cast members who have passed, and the show’s creator and narrator, Earl Hamner, 92, narrates the reunion’s opening and closing.
TV One is reuniting the cast of 2014 comedy Girlfriends Getaway. Garcelle Beauvais, Malinda Williams, Terri J. Vaughn and Essence Atkins star in Girlfriends Getaway 2 on Saturday, August 29 at 8p.
TV One’s Unsung Hollywood features comedian George Wallace on Wednesday, July 29 at 9p. Known for his stand-up specials and a comedic style that focuses on the amusing side of everyday occurrences, the episode will have Wallace reflecting on his career along with fellow comedians Chris Rock and Jerry Seinfeld, his longtime best friend.
The Paley Center for Media hosts its annual celebration of new series with PaleyFest Fall TV Previews September 9-17 at the Center’s Los Angeles location. Each event is devoted to a single network and will feature premiere screenings and exclusive conversations with the stars and creative teams of new shows. In addition, there will be two special events: “NCIS: Los Angeles Fall Premiere” and “CSI: Farewell Salute.” Yahoo will exclusively live stream the interactive panel sessions on Yahoo Live in addition to offering video on demand (VOD) content following each event.

Catalina Sandino Moreno (Red Band Society) has been cast as Luisa, a potential love interest for Joshua Jackson’s Cole on Showtime’s The Affair. Series returns for season two Sunday, October 4 at 10p.
Freida Pinto will guest star on the season four (and Hulu) premiere of The Mindy Project. The Slumdog Millionaire star plays a version of herself that Danny is dating in an alternate reality.
Comcast Corporation and Discovery Communications announced a long-term, comprehensive renewal of their distribution agreement that will deliver Discovery’s 12 U.S. networks to Comcast’s Xfinity TV customers. The deal includes TV Everywhere rights. “Comcast is a dynamic and innovative company and has been a great partner of Discovery’s for over two decades. We look forward to continuing our relationship and unlocking the value of Discovery’s content in even greater ways for Xfinity viewers,” said David Zaslav, president and CEO, Discovery Communications.
Montreal-based independent TV producer/format agency Media Ranch has been commissioned by Bell Media’s lifestyle and entertainment channel Canal Vie to remake Studio Lambert‘s Life in the Kitchen for French Canada. Media Ranch is adapting the format as four 60-minute episodes, following an option deal with distributor All3 Media International. It’s the first time the format has been adapted for a territory outside the UK.
Canada’s independent distributor Picture Box Distribution has added to its kids’ slate, acquiring animated Halloween special The Dancing Pumpkin from US-based Silver Hammer Studios, new American kids’ series Moochie Kalala Detectives Club from Dreaming Tree Films and PBS WTTW, and Canadian series Will’s Jams from Turtlebox Productions and Doowett, produced by Adrian Dean for City Saskatchewan.

Spike three-night event series Tut delivered an average of 2.2 million viewers, the largest average viewership in the time slot (Sun-Tues 9p-11p) in 8 years. Over the series’ run (including encore presentations), Tut delivered 11.4 million total viewers, while 27.2 million consumed Tut content across all digital platforms.
Food Network ranked number three among cable on Friday night, led by Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives with a .7 rating (640,000 imp) among A25-54 and ranking third in the 10p time slot, followed by a strong second outing by Burgers, Brew & ‘Que, which posted a .6 rating (560,000 imp) A25-54 and ranked fourth in the 10:30p time slot.
ABC’s Celebrity Family Feud was Sunday’s top TV show in total viewers (8.5 million) and A18-49 (2.0/7). The series improved its hour year-to-year for the 6th time in as many telecasts, and on average during its run more than doubled its slot in total viewers (up 107 percent) and boosted its A18-49 take by 83 percent.
Saturday’s season premiere of Nat Geo WILD’s The Incredible Dr. Pol scored record ratings, becoming the most-watched telecast in network history in Live+SD. The series was not only up 52 percent from last season’s August 2014 premiere, but was had the highest Live+SD numbers in series’ history with 1.1 million total viewers and .67 P25-54.
TV One docu-series Unsung Hollywood was the number one telecast on cable in its time slot among key demos Black P25-54, W25-54, P18-49, W18-49. On Live+3 and airing Wednesday, July 22 the episode profiling comedic actor Bernie Mac delivered .73 HH (411,000), .67 W25-54 (201,000), .56 W18-49 (172,000) and 0.51 P25-54 (300,000).
The premiere of Gamer’s Guide to Pretty Much Everything was Disney XD’s number one series debut in the network’s over 15-year history (includes Toon Disney) among its primary demographic, Boys 6-11 (398,000/3.3 rating), the network’s number two live-action series premiere ever among Boys 2-11 (442,000/2.2 rating) and its number three live-action launch of all time in total viewers (976,000), Kids 6-11 (522,000/2.2 rating) and Kids 2-11 (583,000/1.5 rating).
