Nominees for the Primetime Emmys were announced Tuesday morning. Among the highlights: “Lovecraft Country,” canceled by HBO after one season, landed 18 nods, including Outstanding Drama and Actor (Jonathan Majors)…Apple TV+ comedy “Ted Lasso” is the most-nominated freshman comedy ever, with 20 nods…Netflix’s “The Crown” and Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” were the shows collecting the most nominations, with 24 each, while among networks/platforms, HBO/HBO Max was the leader with 130 noms, squeaking by Netflix’s 129 (cue the complaints from Netflix for the TV Academy combining HBO and its streamer). NBC earned the most nominations for a broadcast network, with 46…”SNL” cast member Bowen Yang is the first Chinese American actor to receive nomination…A record 49 nominees were non-White, beating last year’s record of 42. The Emmy Awards air live Sunday, September 19 on CBS and Paramount+.

MyNetworkTV’s fall slate is heating up, with the addition of “Chicago Fire.” The procedural is set to air Tuesdays at 9p and 10p. “Adding an additional Dick Wolf hit like ‘Chicago Fire’ to the lineup is a no-brainer,” said Frank Cicha, EVP of Programming for Fox Television Stations. “We’re happy MyNetworkTV will continue to provide broadcast stations a block of big budget, franchise programming each weeknight — with a more favorable ad inventory split than any other network.”

CNN will hold a town hall with President Biden on Wednesday, July 21 at 8p. It’s the news net’s second since Biden took office. Don Lemon will moderate.

Amazon has ordered “Mammals,” a comedy/drama starring “The Late Late Show” host James Corden and Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water”). Street Hassle and Vertigo Films are producing.

OUTtv has greenlit “Iconic Justice” and “Hot Haus” from Daddy TV, “Dating Unlocked” from Border2Border Entertainment, and “Ruckus in Dutchess” from Charles Plummer Productions. “Cam Boy” from Emotion Pictures and “Wigs in a Blanket” from Producers Entertainment Group return to the LGBTQ+ net for a second season.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

HGTV’s “Breaking Bland,” featuring a designer who helps clients express their individuality, launches Wednesday, August 4 at 9p. “My goal is to showcase each client’s personality while also encouraging them to take some bold risks,” said Mary Welch. “I want to help them embrace their fun, weird sides in the best way possible.”

The midseason two premiere of “Tyler Perry’s The Oval” airs Tuesday, July 20 at 9p on BET and BET Her. Joining the cast as series regulars are Kaye Singleton (“Don’t Waste Your Pretty”) and Russell Thomas (“Jane the Virgin”). Nick Barrotta has been upped from recurring to series regular.

The second season of “Dinette” debuts on Bric TV on Friday, September 24. The gender-swapping digital series comedy is produced by Bric Arts Media.

COMING UP

“Global Citizen Live,” a 24-hour live broadcast filmed across six continents, will air Saturday, September 25 across ABC, ABC News Live, BBC, FX, iHeartRadio, Hulu, YouTube, Twitter and more. Artists, activists and world leaders will take the stage to with the goal of helping defend the planet and defeat poverty.

Jordin Sparks (“Sparkle”) will star in and executive produce Hallmark Channel film “A Christmas Treasure,” part of the net’s Countdown to Christmas programming stunt. Michael Xavier (“Christmas Comes Twice”) will co-star.

TECH TALK

Google was slapped with a $592 million fine for failing to negotiate in good faith with French publishers and news agencies regarding compensation for their content. Google had been ordered in April 2020 to hold talks within three months with companies about compensation. “When the authority imposes injunctions on companies, they are required to apply them scrupulously, respecting their letter and their spirit,” said Isabelle de Silva, head of the French watchdog agency. “In the present case, this was unfortunately not the case.” The agency threatened additional fines of $1 million per day if Google fails to produce proposals within two months.

Centro, provider of enterprise automation technology, announced a cookieless targeting feature that automatically recommends contextual categories based on a marketer’s best-performing audiences. The privacy-compliant contextual analysis is powered by Peer39; the contextual category recommendation technology is exclusively available in Basis by Centro.

Innovid will manage third-party ads across NBC Olympics’ CTV apps, including NBC Sports and Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA, using the Olympics Ad Manager. The service will be powered by Innovid as part of a new Olympics advertising suite, including NBCUniversal’s previously announced Olympics Ad Engine. Advertisers will have access to streamlined campaign management; short turnaround times; and MRC accreditation.

Comcast is rolling out new features on Xfinity X1, Xfinity Stream, and Xfinity Flex, to cover Olympic stories. “This year, new features make navigating the Games even easier and more personalized, taking the Olympics experience to a new level,” said Rebecca Heap, SVP, Video and Entertainment Services, Comcast Cable. “And now with Flex, we have the opportunity to leverage some of the best features of X1, like our voice remote and aggregated guide, to introduce the Olympics and all its passion, exhilaration and glory to even more Xfinity customers.”

ADVERTISING

Omnichannel advertising platform Mediaocean has entered into an agreement to acquire ad management platform Flashtalking, combining Flashtalking’s solutions for primary ad serving, creative personalization, identity management, and verification with Mediaocean’s system of record. “Bringing together Mediaocean and Flashtalking is an incredible opportunity for our customers, employees, and the industry at large,” said Bill Wise, CEO of Mediaocean. “Flashtalking is the source of truth for digital and CTV ads and Mediaocean is the system of record for all media. Combined, we will deliver comprehensive and future-forward solutions for omnichannel advertising.”

National CineMedia and Harena Data, an esports community aggregator, have entered in to an esports advertising and content monetization agreement. NCM will have the exclusive right to sell advertising across Harena Data’s ad-supported esports content and events in the US, including in movie theaters, on streaming media, and in place-based locations. “For brands, esports attracts a young demographic that is just like our core moviegoing audience, with extremely high levels of engagement,” said Scott Felenstein, NCM’s President, Sales, Marketing & Partnerships. “As it has grown from a niche advertising strategy to the mainstream, we believe esports will be appealing to brands that continue to try to find new ways to connect with cord-cutting, experience-driven Gen Z consumers.”

Roku reported it doubled the upfront commitments from marketers that it drew last year, counting 42% of 2022 advertisers onboard who didn’t buy Roku last year. The streamer also noted two firsts: closing multi-year and client upfront agreements, and negotiations taking place the same time as broadcast network talks.

KIDS CORNER

9 Story Brands has teamed with brand extension company Retail Monster. The partnership will kick off with the creation of retail programs for “Karma’s World,” 9 Story and Karma’s World Entertainment’s upcoming show from Chris “Ludacris” Bridges set to premiere on Netflix later this year.

Kids animation studio Videogyan is teaming with VlogBox to distribute their content through multiple CTV platforms. For the initial phase of the partnership, VlogBox has developed Videogyan Kids channel on the Roku, Android TV, and Amazon Fire TV streaming platforms. VlogBox will additionally handle maintenance, set up, and support for all upcoming applications.

Moonbug Entertainment has expanded its library on Netflix to include “CoComelon” and “Little Baby Bum.”

APC Kids has secured a deal with WarnerMedia for its 3D CGI animated comedy series “Roger,” including exclusive pay TV rights and non-exclusive non-linear rights in South East Asia, Taiwan and Australia for WarnerMedia Kids brands.

GOING GLOBAL

RTÉ Programme Sales has secured the distribution rights to two documentaries: Donal Moloney’s “Let the Rest of the World Go By” and Ruán Magan’s “The Hunger: The Story of the Irish Famine.” The distributor has also licensed the back catalogue of COCO Content’s hit home-design series “Room To Improve” to Channel 5.

Keshet International inked a deal with Tokyo Broadcasting System Television that will see the producer and distributor bring an original scripted format into Japan. “Deep Crime Unit” follows a unit of the elite SCUBA underwater crime investigation team.

Crime drama “Annika” is set to air in multiple territories as distributor All3Media International concludes a range of pre-sales. The upcoming television adaptation is a Black Camel production for UKTV co-produced with MASTERPIECE in association with All3Media International.

The first “Series Mania Étoile Award” will be presented to Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award-winning singer and actor Audra McDonald on August 26, opening night of Series Mania. McDonald will host a masterclass celebrating her career and a Q&A with her husband and fellow cast member, Will Swenson, after the French premiere of her show, “The Bite.”

UK’s Channel 4 has greenlit Woodcut Media to produce 6-part history doc series “Tony Robinson’s Forgotten War Stories,” presented by actor Sir Tony Robinson, and scheduled to launch later this year.
