IN THE NEWS
Amid the recent surge of support from advertisers pledging to support Black-owned media and creators comes the launch of media collective and accelerator Group Black. “Our mission is simple: dramatically transform the face of media ownership and investment,” said Travis Montaque, Co-Founder, CEO and Director of Group Black. “We started Group Black to infuse diversity into the next generation of creativity and storytelling, and create scaled solutions for brands…We have the expertise to know what solutions will work, entrenched allies to support us, and a dogged belief that we must build a self-sustaining platform of Black media ownership for the industry to evolve.” Group Black’s media buying power will begin with a target media investment of $75 million from GroupM, part of Group Black’s effort to deploy at least $500 million in Black-owned media by the end of 2022.
Amazon renewed “Good Omens,” originally intended as a limited series, for a second season. Michael Sheen and David Tennant will return as an unlikely pair who try to save the world from the apocalypse.
Facebook has launched Bulletin, a newsletter platform to help writers monetize their following. A rival for Substack and Revue, Bulletin has already recruited Malcolm Gladwell, Tan France and Erin Andrews. Writers maintain ownership of their work and subscribers, and are able to publish free and paid newsletters that can be distributed across inboxes and the Facebook platform. “One of the reasons we’re doing this is a response to what we’re seeing and what’s happening in the media ecosystem,” said Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. “More and more independent writers are discovering ways to use their voice and make money through other avenues, similar to the ones we’re introducing here. So we’re trying to elevate and support those writers and creators who are already producing high-quality work.”
Why else might Facebook be investing in newsletters? It’s simple, Kerel Cooper, CMO of LiveIntent, tells Cynopsis. “Newsletters drive revenue,” notes Cooper. “Facebook realized that newsletters are a powerful vehicle for delivering content that consumers have opted into and engage with at a high rate, and can therefore be monetized at a premium.” Facebook is just the latest throwing their hat in the email newsletter ring, says Cooper – a recent LiveIntent survey found 87% of marketers and publishers are actively invested in email and 94% are prioritizing scaling their email programs this year.
“For Life,” cancelled by ABC after two seasons, is not yet most sincerely dead. Amazon streaming service IMDb TV is now airing the existing seasons of the drama, and Deadline reports Sony Pictures Television has extended the options on the cast. In the event “For Life” performs well on the streamer, it could land a third season as an IMDb TV Original.
The Directors Guild of America, which like other groups during the pandemic adjusted eligibility rules requiring films to have a theatrical run before hitting other platforms, has reinstated the theater requirement. Films released June 15 or later must launch with an exclusive seven-day theatrical run to be eligible for a DGA film award.
