NBC Sports Digital is introducing Playmaker Media in a move to offer “end-to-end support for companies in need of best-in-class live streaming and VOD solutions” by leveraging the company’s experience streaming sports events. At launch, Playmaker is partnering with technology companies Adobe, Akamai, Microsoft, iStreamPlanet, and Comcast Wholesale with the International Olympic Committee on board as its first client to offer live streaming video support for the IOC’s Olympic Channel, a global digital initiative which is expected to launch later this year.
“The growing demand for live streaming support in the marketplace combined with our experience and expertise make this the perfect time to launch Playmaker,” said Rick Cordella, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Digital Media, NBC Sports Group. “Whether it is live streaming the biggest sporting events in the world or hosting on-demand video clips or live-event replays, our clients can expect best-in-class service that will provide their viewers with an enjoyable and seamless streaming experience.”
The Thunder’s win on Sunday on TNT reeled in averaged eight million viewers with a 4.7 rating, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals, to rank as the most-viewed program of the night on cable for the third straight time this series. The numbers mark the most viewed and highest rated Conference Finals Game 3 airing on the network since 2011. Turner’s TV Everywhere platforms scored 469,927 uniques up 285% over last year, with live streams up 136% and minutes consumed up 97%.
On the talent front, NBC Sports Group golf analyst David Feherty will join the company’s expedition to Rio to serve as a correspondent for the 2016 Summer Olympics. Feherty will offer commentary on NBC’s primetime coverage, as well on other shows and platforms and contribute to NBC’s Opening Ceremony coverage on August 5. Feherty will serve as an on-course reporter and tower analyst during the men’s golf competition and contribute to Golf Channel’s Live From the Olympics coverage of both the men’s and women’s competitions.
Annie Apple will join ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown this fall as a contributor where she will offer player profiles and other stories for ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown pregame show. "Annie caught our attention during the NFL Draft and when we met with her in-person at ESPN we were blown away by her relatability, her sense of humor and just how unafraid she is to speak her mind," said Seth Markman, senior coordinating producer for ESPN’s NFL studio shows. "Annie brings a very unique perspective as the mother of a current NFL player and as a fan, and we look forward to exploring a variety of different story ideas with her on Sunday NFL Countdown."

Mexico’s Televisa locked in a multi-year broadcast rights agreement with the NBA, according to the company. The broadcaster will carry NBA games on its free-to-air channel and offer games on demand beginning June 2.

For the second consecutive year, NASCAR will serve up “600 Miles of Remembrance” to pay tribute this Memorial Day Weekend to fallen service members. All drivers will sports the name of someone who served and died defending our country Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway at 6p on FOX. Toyota will also honor the names of fallen service members on its pace cars and grand marshal cars for the Coca-Cola 600 as part of 600 Miles of Remembrance. Other activities include Goodyear replacing the “Eagle” sidewall design with “Support Our Troops” messaging on all tires used during the Memorial Day Weekend races. In partnership with Operation Gratitude, Mars will invite race fans to help assemble care packages for the troops in the midway at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Meanwhile, FOX Sports will recognize all service members who have lost their lives in the past year by displaying their names and branch of service on a graphic scroll.
ESPN unveiled its full lineup of sponsors for X Games Austin, taking place June 2-5 in Austin. AT&T, Coors Light, Intel (more on this below) and LifeProof locked in deals to join the lineup beside returning brands America’s Navy, Harley-Davidson, Fruit of the Loom, Monster Energy and Toyota. Additional event sponsors include Skype, TNT’s Animal Kingdom and Torchy’s Tacos. Activations include a jump by the Navy’s Parachute Team (Leapfrogs) and a flyover by America’s Navy; Fruit of the Loom will host its #getbigair campaign and invite fans to simulate sky diving through a vertical wind tunnel; Harley-Davidson will be in the Galleria with X Games athletes teaching fans how to ride; and Toyota will host activations that will allow fans to interact with several of its most popular vehicles.
The World Boxing Council is tapping Learfield Licensing Partners for an exclusive deal that makes Learfield Licensing the WBC’s global representative across all categories for licensing and merchandising. According to the company, Learfield Licensing has been hired to “maximize exposure opportunities for the WBC globally while helping secure strong partnerships for WBC-licensed products across various categories and retail channels.”
Reebok is launching “Hunt Greatness,” a campaign and platform created by J.J. Watt in a move to encourage people to “pursue a better version of themselves, every day, through fitness” via a series of three videos. “The Prologue” also features the launch of the official J.J. Watt logo and sets the stage for the launch of Watt’s first signature products from Reebok, coming later this summer.
Dollar General is ending its primary sponsorship with the Joe Gibbs Racing No. 20 Toyota Camry. “Dollar General has had tremendous success with NASCAR and our sponsorship of Joe Gibbs Racing," the store said in the statement. "We have enjoyed a great partnership with Joe Gibbs Racing and we are excited to see what the No. 20 Dollar General car driven by Matt Kenseth will accomplish during the remainder of 2016 NASCAR Sprint Cup season.
Intel’s new plans to partner with the X Games Austin will see the company provide real-time data on athlete performance, including in-air rotations, jump height, jump distance, speed and force on landing that will be incorporated into the broadcast with an assist from the Intel Curie module, which will be attached on rider’s bikes for the BMX Big Air and BMX Dirt and on skater’s helmets for the Men’s Skateboard Big Air competitions.
Cycle is launching an all-access documentary series following the WNBA’s Breanna Stewart that will showcase her life and professional career. The slate will run on Cycle’s Facebook page as on its online site.
Turner and WME/IMG will see the inaugural season of ELeague be distributed to over 80 countries around the world including Turner networks in Latin America and Asia, along with broadcast rights sold by IMG and Turner International in other territories. The new eSports league officially launches today with content on Twitch and a Friday night televised showcase airing on TBS at 10p. “ELEAGUE is a global competition showcasing some of the best teams around the world and we’re committed to providing best-in-class coverage across all platforms in all countries,” said Craig Barry, EVP and Chief Content Officer, Turner Sports. “This global approach to distributing eSports content is reflective of the worldwide community that so passionately supports it.”
Is ESPN preparing for an all-out assault for League of Legends? Although a PVP Live report states that the company was in talks to snap up TV rights for the Riot game, spokespeople for both Riot Games and ESPN told reporters that the story was inaccurate. The report claimed that ESPN and Riot were negotiating a deal valued at $500 million that would give ESPN broadcasting rights to League of Legends content.
The NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl hired Mike Feder to serve as Executive Director where he will work with the football bowl’s Executive Committee and Advisory Board. Mike served as the NOVA Home Loans Arizona Bowl Marketing Coordinator in November and December of last year.
