CYNOPSISDIGITAL
03.28.16 Good morning. It’s Monday March 28, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Open Source App: An app designed using “open source” software. With open source software, the copyright holder makes the source code publicly available, allowing anyone to change, study, or distribute it. Open source apps are a valuable learning tool for aspiring developers.
Mobile data is precious, but video streaming consumes tons of it. Unbeknownst to anyone else, Netflix has been addressing the issue: The service confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that, for the past five years, it has been throttling video speeds across most wireless providers (including AT&T and Verizon), capping streaming quality at 600 kilobits per second. Netflix has long been a proponent of open-Internet “net-neutrality” rules, and many are charging the company with hypocrisy. AT&T exec Jim Cicconi even said that his company is “outraged.” Netflix says it was merely trying to “protect consumers from exceeding mobile data caps.” The company also announced that, this May, it will be launching a new mobile data saver for its app, allowing users to manually adjust the quality of their video stream – and therefore the amount of data they consume.
The media and e-commerce platform Brit + Co returned to Snapchat’s Discover platform. The Discover platform, which consists of publisher-controlled channels, last hosted a Brit + Co channel during the winter holidays. This time, the company’s Discover channel – which went live Saturday – featured an Easter theme, with a focus on cooking, fashion and decorating. Unlike other Discover denizens, the channel was designed to be temporary. Brit + Co Discover channels will continue appearing during holidays and seasonal moments. As with other Discover partners, Snapchat will share in the revenue that Brit + Co generates from brand integrations and sponsorship sales.
Tribeca Shortlist, Lionsgate and Tribeca Enterprises‘ SVOD service featuring curated movie playlists from film industry figures, will be the Presenting Sponsor for BAFTA New York’s “In Conversation” live interview series. Today’s live conversation with actor Tom Hiddleston will kick off this year’s series. Meanwhile, participating talent from the series – beginning with Hiddleston this June – will be providing their own curated movie playlists to Tribeca Shortlist. “Obviously [SVOD] is a crowded space right now,” Tribeca Shortlist President Jeff Bronikowski told Cynopsis Digital. “But that is why Tribeca Shortlist’s distinction of having a carefully curated, quality collection of movies and more personally guided experience for film discovery is so important. We’re reshaping the on-demand experience by making it human again and choosing quality over quantity to avoid the movie search spiral.”

Once Snapchat starts reeling in $100 million acquisitions, you know it’s doing well for itself. That’s roughly how much the company just paid to purchase Bitstrips, creator of the Bitmoji app. Bitmoji allows users to create custom avatars that mirror their own appearance. The app jells nicely with Snapchat’s growing stable of personalized app features – particularly Lenses, which allows users to create partially animated selfies. Even for the increasingly successful Snapchat, $100 million is a hefty chunk of change. For some context, the company hopes to pull in around $300 million in revenue this year.
For TV programmers, VR is an invaluable awareness- and enthusiasm-building tool, helping to drive audiences to traditional content. Discovery Communications is a prime example: The company’s Discovery VR unit, which launched last August, has produced VR content surrounding linear programming like the Puppy Bowl and Mythbusters. The latest from Discovery Communications is a VR video surrounding the April 3 season three premiere of Destination America’s Ghost Asylum. A six-minute clip taking viewers on a ghost hunt, it’s available on DiscoveryVR.com, Littlstar, and the Discovery VR app. It’ll also be available in a shortened version on Facebook 360 and YouTube.
In the world of app design – even more so than with other types of software – developers tend to keep their secrets close to the vest. As a result, open source code is the exception, not the rule, which makes it harder for aspiring developers to learn from the masters. That’s why Google has launched the new Android Experiments I/O Challenge, soliciting open source submissions from the best and brightest. Three winners will be chosen, getting a free a trip to this May’s Google I/O developer conference. The contest runs through April 13.
Calvin Klein broadcast its Fall 2016 campaign shoot on Periscope, and made elements of the shoot available through Snapchat and Instagram. “As the fashion industry evolves its approach to consumer engagement,” said CMO Melisa Goldie, “we believe that real-time access into an iconic Calvin Klein advertising campaign would be a compelling and innovative way to tell our story.” Calvin Klein’s revenue for the fiscal fourth-quarter is up 21%. The lesson: In the age of Periscope, Snapchat and Instagram, brands can interact with consumers in new and creative ways – and successful interactive digital marketing campaigns can heavily impact revenue growth.
Package-delivery is likely the next big thing for the drone industry. On Friday, the delivery startup Flirtey completed the first fully autonomous drone delivery in the U.S., flying half a mile to deliver a package in Nevada. Amazon has been looking into using drones as well. Obstacles remain, most notably the FAA. On Friday – the same day as Flirtey’s delivery – the agency issued a report detailing hundreds of near misses between drones and manned aircraft. Commercial drone users will have to hammer out detailed regulations with the FAA before they can scale drone delivery into a viable industry.
Is the Amazon Echo about to get some stiff competition? The Information reports that Google is working on using its voice recognition tech to create a device similar to the Echo. The project is one of several new home automation efforts being spearheaded by the hardware creator Nest, an independent unit owned by Google parent company Alphabet.
Voltron: Legendary Defender, Netflix’s animated reboot of the 1984 series Voltron: Defender of the Universe, has a new trailer and release date. The series, which centers on its titular mechanistic hero, debuts June 10. It hails from Dreamworks Animation. The series demonstrates the depth and breadth of Netflix’s original content ambitions in 2016 and beyond. Gone are the days when the service built its efforts entirely on a handful of prestige dramas. Now the service is going both big and small, both live-action and animated, targeting increasingly precise niches and demos. Expect that trend to continue.
Richard Beckman, the former Conde Nast exec who joined Vice Media last May as Chief Revenue Officer, has abruptly left the company. No official reasons were given, though The Hollywood Reporter reports that he’ll be looking to manage his own business. comScore recently reported a 17.4% drop in web traffic for the month of February. In the meantime, a senior team will be overseeing Vice’s brand partnerships. No official word on when Beckman will be replaced.

Apple’s latest ad for the Apple TV makes hilarious use out of Alison Brie and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. (Side note: It’s great to see Jaime Lannister sporting two hands again.) Brie and Coster-Waldau, playing themselves as co-stars in a period drama, sit in a studio trailer, struggling to find the spark of passion as they prepare for a steamy kissing scene. That’s when the Apple TV’s new voice recognition capabilities really start to come in handy. Kudos to Apple: It’s a funny and effective use of influencers to stoke interest in the niftiest new features of its flagship connected device. Check out the ad here.
