Twitter is planning to by social media talent agency Niche, the company that pairs up advertisers with content creators on social media platforms. The purchase signals Twitter’s attempt to ramp up its video advertising, the sector currently dominated by Facebook and YouTube. “As more users and creators use different products as a way to share what’s happening in their world, brands are also looking to partner with those individuals in hopes of generating moments that resonate with the people they’re trying to reach,” explained Baljeet Singh, product management director for Twitter.
James Franco will star in Hulu’s upcoming nine-hour miniseries from J.J. Abrams called 11/22/63. Based on the Stephen King book of the same title, the thriller follows a high school English teacher who travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Bridget Carpenter (Friday Night Lights) will write the script and executive produce with King and Bad Robot‘s Bryan Burk.
Saturday Night Live devotees, rejoice: in honor of the show’s 40th anniversary, NBC just released the free app SNL40, which features clips from more than 800 episodes. For the super-fan, the app includes tag-based data to deeply rummage through the past 40 years, along with more recent clips. NBC even went as far to supply a free emoji keyboard that includes longtime exec producer Lorne Michaels or the character “Stefon” in cartoon form to share with friends.
Amazon will bring back classic children’s show Sigmund and the Sea Monsters for its next pilot season. The series originally aired on NBC in the mid 1970s, and followed a sea monster who is cast out by his family because he will not purposely scare people. Amazon did not disclose details on the release date.
Leading up to the 87th Annual Academy Awards on February 22, People launched two new red carpet style series yesterday. Louise Roe (Fashion Police) and Funny or Die’s Jonathan Van Ness will host Style is the Name of the Game, a short form video show that predicts what the A-list stars will wear on the big night. Another series, How It’s Done, will feature Oscar style inspiration from the past years’ red carpets. Both series are available on People.com.
The Orchard acquired North American rights to Sundance Film Festival Special Jury Award winning documentary Cartel Land for theatrical and digital distribution. Part Breaking Bad and part Robin Hood, the documentary highlights vigilante groups near the U.S. and Mexico border taking the law into their owns hands to protect the area. It will be released this fall.
Cartoon Network is getting its head in the game, specifically the NBA All-Star game. CN will feature special segments integrated into its TV show and digital platforms on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15, including a video Q&A on the CN Sayin’ App with NBC All-Stars and NBA video packages on CartoonNetwork.com and VOD. Behind-the-scenes images from CN Sayin’ interviews will also be shared on CN’s Instagram. Turner Broadcasting and Turner Sports are celebrating 30 years of NBA All-Star coverage with TNT as the exclusive home for the games.
Google and 20th Century Fox teamed up to transform the film Kingsman: The Secret Service into an interactive website Become a Kingsman. Using Google Chrome, Google Street View/Maps and YouTube, the site’s users can partake in a series of fights and other “spy-worthy” tasks. Kingsman: The Secret Service stars Colin Firth, and follows a secret spy who recruits a street kid into his agency’s competitive training program to battle an evil tech genius.

Musician Kanye West performed a free concert at Madison Square Garden last night, and streamed it live on Jay Z’s Life + Times channel on YouTube (785,000 subscribers, 590 million views). The concert series was hosted by Jay Z’s Roc Nation, and featured Oklahoma City Thunder basketball player Kevin Durant.
For the fourth year in a row, Rentrak named Telemundo the top Hispanic VOD network in 2014. The network ranked the highest in views and hours, totaling 18.5 million hours of all Hispanic VOD views last year. Rentrak OnDemand Essential is based on total VOD transactions from 2011-2014.

Video inventory management platform SpotXchange and entertainment company RTL Nederland announced a joint venture for the Benelux region in Amsterdam. At launch, SpotXchange Benelux will bring broadcast quality video inventory of video-on-demand platform RTL XL, and other top gaming, sports, and entertainment publishers affiliated with the video strip network to agencies and advertisers. RTL Group (RTL Nederland’s parent company) acquired a 65 percent stake in SpotXchange last September.
Newly launched content creator, producer and distributor Endemol Shine Group appointed William Tan as Managing Director of Endemol Shine China. He was previously Head of Viacom International Media Networks Greater China.
Emmy and Cannes Lion Award winning interactive entertainment agency Secret Location opened a Los Angeles office with a new hire yesterday. Eric Shamlin was appointed to Vice President, Managing Director and Executive Producer for Secret Location. Most recently, Shamlin was the Executive Creative Producer for production company Stopp in Stockholm.
Talent agent David Unger joined Three Six Zero Group to launch Three Six Zero Entertainment. He will join co-founder Mark Gillespie as co-CEO, and operate in partnership with Jay X’s entertainment company Roc Nation.
